Inverness / James Johnstone, a Flesher, Petty St Inverness.
« on: Thursday 31 October 13 12:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

I am trying to solve a confusing family mystery and hope someone can help me. I feel like I have all the pieces, I just cannae figure it oot! I am trying to find out the situation regarding the wives/mothers.

The query relates to the father of:

James Johnstone(the younger)
Occupation: Flesher or Butcher
Born: 1814 in Inverness
Married: 1837 to Jane MacPherson at Little Cantray
Died: Sept 1864 in Inverness

On the census he is living at Petty St, Inverness in both 1851 and 1861.

Now on his death record it lists his father as 'James Johnstone' (the elder) and 'Jessica ______'. The informant was his daughter.

I see James Johnstone (the elder) on the 1841 census at Little Cantray, the wife is listed as 'Janet' Johnstone. I believe I also see him on 1851 living at Stephen's Brae (which would make sense as another son Alexander also lived on that street and they are all listed as fleshers), and the wife is listed as 'Jannet Johnstone'. There are two children with him there, James and Margaret. When I look up their birth records it shows that the mother should be a Janet Cumming.

On the death record of what I think is James Johnstone (the elder) in Feb 1864, as he died at Petty St Inverness and listed as a Flesher, it says he is married to 'Jessie McDonald'! The informant was his son James.

So...what is going on here, I am confused. Janet MackIntosh, Janet Cumming or Jessie McDonald...did he marry all of them, or is it misinformation? Have I got something wrong?

I don't see a marriage record for James Johnstone (the elder) and Jessie McDonald, or a marriage record for James Johnstone (the elder) and Janet Cumming, although I know for sure a Johntone/Cumming pairing had kids. The death record of James Johnstone (the younger)'s bother Alexander shows that his parents were James Johnstone(the elder) and Janet MackIntosh.

Possible scenario:

1806: James Johnstone (the elder) marries Janet Mackintosh
1818: Last recorded child of this marriage, that I know of.
1841: James Johnstone (the elder) listed with 'Janet' Johnstone.
1851: James Johnstone (the elder) listed with 'Jannet' Johnstone and two children who should be the children of a James Johnstone/Janet Cumming. (A Jane McDonald listed as a 17yo house servant).
1864: James Johnstone dies and wife listed as 'Jessie McDonald'

I need a fresh pair of eyes to look at this! Grateful for any assitance!

Scotland / Proclaiming of Banns in different parishes?
« on: Tuesday 27 August 13 14:47 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information related to the proclaiming of banns in different parishes. I am looking at the marriage of my 4 x Great Grandparents Donald McLarty and Mary Sinclair. For this I see:

From Craignish Parish Records

1. Donald Mclarty proclaimed in Craignish married Mary Sinclair proclaimed in the parish of Kilmelfort. Married on the 24th of January 1790.

2. Donald McLarty in this parish and Mary Sinclair in Kilmelfort, gave their names to be proclaimed in order to marriage, 24th of January 1790.

From Kilmelfort Parish Records

1.Donald McLarty son to Alexander McLarty Baravuillin (?), Craignish Parish and Mary Sinclair daughter to John Sinclair workman in ?? ?? consigned their names in purpose of marriage 2nd February, 1790.

My question is... are these three the same people? Is it normal to be proclaimed like this more than once and in separate parishes? The second document was so badly damaged it was barely readable, but I could just make out the wording.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Argyll Place name help needed!
« on: Monday 19 August 13 15:17 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone!

I am looking for some assistance in making out the names listed in this birth record. It relates to the Parish of Kilninver and Kilmelford, Argyll. I believe it says:

"Archibald son of Hugh MacCorquodale ?? in ?? + Jannet MacCallum his wife was born the 26th of September and Baptised on the same day."

I believe the location could possibly be Ardanstur, which is near Melfort, but I would be grateful if anyone could tell me if I have maybe read it incorrectly. I have no idea what the profession is listed as.

I am looking for any information about the origins of:

Harriet Sporton
Born: Abt 1824 Gibraltar
Married:1853 to John Hutcheson/Aitcheson in Wigtownshire.
Died: 1899 Barnhill Poor House, Glasgow.

Father: Joseph Sporton, occupation was a Soldier.
Mother: Agnes Thomson.

She appears on the census records as living in Stranraer, Wigntownshire in 1861 and St Quivox and Newton On Ayr, Ayrshire in 1871.

I have seen her maiden name spelt as Sporton, Sportin, Sportain or Sporting and her first name as Herriot, Harriet or Herriet.

Just to make things worse her marriage name has been listed as Aitcheson, Aitchison, Hutcheson or Hutchison.

I would like to know more about her father, the soldier Joseph Sporton, where was he married? What Regiment was he in? Is there a birth record for his daughter? Is there a marriage record for him with his wife? Where are they on census records?

Scotland / Reasons for birthplace discrepancies?
« on: Monday 29 July 13 14:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks,

I am just looking to see other peoples experiences when it comes to birthplace discrepancies on Scottish records.

One of my ancestors, Christina Andrew (1831-1893) states on a number of census records that she was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire while on the 1855 birth record of her son it states she was born in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire.

I cant find any other connection to Hamilton in Lanarkshire and the Kilmacolm birth makes more sense, although it means that the mother listed on her death cert is probably incorrect.

Anyway, my question is, why did people at that time write different birthplaces on these official documents?
