Hi everyone,

Can anyone help me with the handwriting of the following picture? I believe it says:

"Christina Scott
Maiden name Andrew
24 years ????????
Her Second Child"

On the census records it says she was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. I just have no idea what is written there as it is definitely not Hamilton.

Inverness / Starting Dates for Sleat/Strath (Skye) records.
« on: Thursday 24 January 13 16:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I'm having a look at the records for Stath and Sleat in Skye, I see that birth and marriage records only started in 1813 in Sleat, and around the same time in Strath.

Is there absolutely no other way to trace ancestors beyond that point in Southern Skye? Does anyone else have any tips or other sources of information that might be useful.

Born: Unknown, Possibly between 1740-1760?

Donald MacDonald (my ancestor) married three times, to Jean Pollock (1819), Margaret MacPherson (1851) and Margaret Nicolson (1862).

His half-brother Niel MacDonald was married to Anne MacDonald, date unknown.

I really would be interested in finding:

  • Birth, Death and Marriage records of Alexander MacDonald
  • Birth record for Niel MacDonald

Ross & Cromarty / Catherine Cameron - Kiltearn
« on: Friday 13 April 12 20:37 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking to clarify the parents of:

Catherine Cameron
Born: possibly 1827, Killtearn, Ross and Cromarty. (location backed up by census records)
Died 1896 Coulhill, Allness, Ross and Cromarty

Married: Hugh MacPherson (1831-1924) in 1854, Drummond Village, Kiltearn.

Children:
Margaret MacPherson (1855-)
John MacPherson (1859-)
Donald MacPherson (1861-)
Annabella MacPherson (1863-)
Angus MacPherson (1866-1944)
Catherine MacPherson (1870-)

According to her death certificate in 1896 her parents were John Cameron (wood carter) and Margaret McKenzie.

Yet when I do my normal searches I see no marriage record for these parents, and I can see no other children born to this couple. However, matching up with census records and other birth/marriage records there is a John Cameron (Forrester/wood carter) and Margaret MacDonald from the same town, around Evanton in Kiltearn.

Now everything seems to match up.. except for the mothers maiden name. Why would the death record have McKenzie instead of MacDonald? Could there be a reason for this? Or a mistake? Or a mistake on my behalf?

Argyllshire / Archibald Graham b abt 1817.
« on: Friday 10 February 12 16:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I am looking for the death date of the following person:

Archibald Graham.

b. abt 1817 North Knapdale

m. 1841 to Margaret McIntyre (1818-1882) in Craignish Parish. (profession at this time listed as Servant at Barbreck House)

children:

Howard Douglas Campbell Graham b. 1841 Craignish.
Donald Graham b. 1843 Craignish d. 1919 in the Mariners Home, Greenock.
Mary Graham b. 1846 Craignish
John Graham b. 1848 Glassary Parish
Euphemia Graham b. 1850 Glassary Parish
Margaret Graham b 1856 Lochgilphead

1861 Census listed as living at Cossack St, Lochgilphead. Profession: Seaman. Curiously, his age and birthplace are left blank, perhaps he was out at sea during the census night?

His son's marriage certificate lists him as deceased in 1872, so his death must be between 1861-1872...but I can't find it anywhere! Perhaps he passed away overseas as he was a seaman (as were some of his sons).

Any help would be appreciated!! :)

Lanarkshire / McDonalds of Crosslee and Glasgow.
« on: Monday 23 January 12 12:21 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information related to the McDonald family that was in Crosslee for some period of time before moving to Glasgow.  The information is as follows:

Donald/Daniel McDonald - Jean Pollock
Married in Glasgow 1819

Profession: Cotton Spinner.

Children that I know of:

Archibald b. 1823 Crosslee
John b. 1825 Crosslee d. 1902 Glasgow. (married Mary Inglis Kay)
Jean b. 1828 Crosslee
Donald b. 1831 Glasgow
Mary b. 1832 Glasgow
Agnes b. 1833 Glasgow
Christina b. 1836 Glasgow
Rachel b. 1839 Glasgow
Mary b. 1842 Glasgow
Neil b. 1845 Glasgow

I have no idea what became of the father Donald or Daniel McDonald. Some sources have his death date as 1851, but I see no evidence of this. I have marriage certificates of his daughters suggesting he may of been alive in 1857 and well into the 1860s, which would be handier as it is after the standerdisation of 1855.

Census records that I suspect are of him, list him as being born in Middle Paisley some time in the 1790s.

Any information or suggestions would be very much appreciated as this is my direct paternal line and I've been stuck on this for ages!
