Thanks for trying.  I don't think Heindrich is the man I am looking for......unless he changed all his names.  The man I seek is Henry Charles Toelle born 1900.
What I really need is someone to tell me how I can access German Births, Deaths and Marriages (in English)
Thanks everyone

World War One / Re: SHIP - WHITBY ABBEY AT GALLIPOLI
« on: Monday 06 May 13 11:35 BST (UK)  »
I now know that the Whitby Abbey was fired upon at Gallipoli but didn't sink.  I believe she also hit an unchartered reef - but didn't sink.  Also a German U Boat fired on them but missed.  I also am led to believe that the ships mascot - a goat - was killed by enemy fire.  Its stomach  contents revealed a lot of things that had been missing from the ship!?!?
Are there any maps etc. that show where the ship was anchored?    Thanks for all the help

Armed Forces / Re: 24th Battalion Territorials
« on: Friday 03 May 13 12:21 BST (UK)  »
Thanks.....yes this is the George Fluke (my grandfather).  I have a copy of a document that states "24th Battalion County of London "The Queens" This is to certify that the bearer No.1083 Pte. G.Fluke H.Co. has been attended and is a Soldier of the above Battalion 25.11.09 signed R.T.K. Auld Captain and
Adjutant 24th Battalion County of London, "The Queens".

He would have been a month off of 17 years. (b.25.12.1892).  I believe the Territorials were night time and Saturday soldiers!?!?   I really just want to find out where the group met, how many men, what they did, etc.etc. Photos would be great.   Thanks for your help Much appreciated.
I must try and get his Military records when I get a chance.  As I said before he later went on to join the navy and then after coming to Australia joined the Australian Airforce for WW2.

Thanks for input.  Shame there is no mother's name.  If I bought the certificate would it show any other details?

thanks for all the answers.  I have read the diary - although I admit it was some years ago. Maybe time to get possession again and re-read.  Maybe the ship was fired upon and it was another ship that sunk.  I will try and clarify this in coming weeks.  Thanks again.

Europe / Henry Charles Toelle - born Germany
« on: Tuesday 30 April 13 02:21 BST (UK)  »
How can I find a German relative?  His name is Henry Charles Toelle (although that name may be anglicised)  b. abt. 1826 in Detmold, Lippe  Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.
I would like to find his family .....and also the date he came to Australia.
In Australia he married Catherine Doughtery on 5th Feb. 1857.
He died in Balmain, Sydney on 31st August 1900.  Thank you
