Suffolk Lookup Requests / Sudbury Baptism - OSBORNE
« on: Monday 05 November 12 03:59 GMT (UK)  »
HI,
I am looking for the baptism of Joseph Osborne.
His military records (7th Dragoons) say he was born in Sudbury about 1806.  (Swore before a magistrate that he was 18 years old in 1824 - however he might have been putting his age up.)
before joining the dragoons he was in the East Suffolk Militia

He later lived in Canada and New Zealand
Thanks

Suffolk / Redgrave baptisms, Broome marriages - SLAPP
« on: Friday 02 November 12 16:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I have the Will of Thomas Slapp of Redgrave cum Botesdale and he is exactly the person I need. His Will names my ancestor, Thomas WAYTH, as his son and as his executor.  So now I need to find out about Thomas Slapp.

Thomas Slapp was born abt 1743  (death year - age)  I hope at Redgrave  (it seems that SLAPPS were in Redgrave at the begining and end of the 1700s - hoping they were there in the middle too.

His Will names his wife as Ann Katherina - which I think is the 1766 marriage of Ann Katherina KENDALL & Thomas SLAPP at Broome.

I am hoping someone can look up the marriage and baptism for me
Thank you

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Lookup, Baptism at Botesdale c 1760 - WAYTH
« on: Friday 26 October 12 04:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am looking for the baptism of Thomas WAYTH.  It should be in 1759 or 1760 - he was 58 years old when he died in 1818.
He was the illegitimate son of Jane WAYTH, formerly of Benhall, Suffolk - I know this from his Will.
.
His apprenticeship paper shows he was living in Botesdale before 1777.
Newspaper advertisments show that he was an attorney at law in Botesdale from 1782 to 1787 when pressures of work caused him to move residence to Eye.
.
Thomas Slapp of Botesdale was shown as his guardian on the 1777 apprentice indenture.  Anything on Thomas Slapp is of interest too.
Thank you

Occupation Interests / Sea Captain John Johnson b 1777, d 1838
« on: Thursday 18 October 12 15:09 BST (UK)  »
I know John Johnson was, Master & Owner of the brig Ellen from 1829 until his death in 1838.  I know of this from the Lloyd's register and from his Will.

I am trying to identify his ship before the Ellen.  Having searched shipping lists etc I think that he may have captained the "Bang-up" - which was a coastal trader around England and made occasional voyages to Boston and Providence.  This would have been from April 1812 until January 1829.

Can anyone tell me whether John Johnson was indeed Master of the "Bang-Up" and anything about the "Bang-up"?

Thank you

Graveyards and Gravestones / REIS & MAVRE suffixes
« on: Monday 19 March 12 22:52 GMT (UK)  »
I am transcribing headstone plaques for a local genealogy society.

On two Jewish plaques (had Star of David emblem) I found the suffixes "REIS" and "MAVRE".  At first I thought they were surnames, but I checked the cemetery records for those plaques and found the names (Stefica Herlinger, Laci Herlinger as on the plaque) but no suffix.

Are these known suffixes and what do they signify?

Northamptonshire / Wright of Crick, berfore 1736, unknown cousins
« on: Saturday 11 February 12 23:33 GMT (UK)  »
I am tracing some Wright relatives from Crick.  They were there in the 1600's and possibly earlier.

In particular descendants of Randall Wright & Elizabeth Nowett, married 1610 Crick.
Their son Richard Wright & Elizabeth (his wife) married circa 1660
Their son Arthur married, but I don't know to whom  (known of through a Will)
Arthur's son John Wright & Elizabeth Mawbey m 1719, lived at Crick
John Wright's son John Wright & 1) Anne Maltby 2) Mary (possibly skinner.

John Wright, Elizabeth Mawbey & children (Arthur, John Elizabeth, Mary. Oliver & Thomas) went to Lubenham circa 1737.

I have been trace them primarily through Wills and parish registers.

Thomas Wrights Will (written 1711, proved 1727) and Samuel's Will (written 1735, proved 1736) list some cousins who might be from the Crick area, or might be from London (Samuel & Thomas lived in London)
These cousins are:
Mrs Elizabeth Dunn the Elder
Cousin: John Dunn

John Clark s/o Mrs Phillipa Clark
Cousin: Susanna Clark
Cousin: Thomas Clark
Rebecca Horner, sister of Thomas Clark

Cousin: James Fisher
Alexander s/o James Fisher
Elizabeth Basine sister of James Fisher

Thomas Gardner of Brackley, Northants
Elizabeth, Amy & Anne – sisters of Thomas Gardner

Mrs Mary Woodcock – sister of Jane Glegg, Edward Wookcock
Mrs Jane Glegg
Thomas & Edward – sons of Thomas Glegg   Banker in Lombard St London

If anyone has any information on the Wright family of Crick or families they married into I would like to hear.
Regards

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Marriage at Borrough Hill, 1766
« on: Friday 10 February 12 23:11 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a marriage of John Wright.
It occurred between  March 1765 when his first wife died and October 1767 when his first child to his second wife was born.
John left a Will which makes it clear that both these marriage are his and that his second wife's given Mary.

Family Search index has a John Wright marrying a Mary Skinner at Borrough Hill, Leics on 17 Nov 1766.
This could be John's second marriage.

It would help if the marriage record showed John's marital status, occupation  or witnesses.
Hoping someone has access to this record.

Many thanks
Steve
