Australia / Convict transported to Hobart Circa 1844
« on: Sunday 17 February 13 01:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Looking for a convict that my GG grandfather wrote about.
My gg grandfather Thomas Wayth GUDGEON wrote an article "The Forgery" for the "Thames Advertiser" in New Zealand. The author was a regular writer to the newspapers and is known to change details and names to protect privacy.
The story is about a "secretary" in the Return of Duty office in the Taxation Department at Somerset House, London. The "secretary's" name was given as "William Yates" (most probably not his real name). He was convicted in about 1844 and transported to Hobart with a sentence of 12 years. The story says he was 52 years old at the time.
I don't believe his real name was Yates, so how do I find him?
thanks
Steve
