Australia Lookups completed / Charles Langley Rutter
« on: Friday 21 November 08 22:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All
Am looking for a death notice from the Brisbane Courier Mail. Charles Langley Rutter died 6 December 1932. Buried Toowong on 7th December 1932.
My great grandmother's sister Jane married a Charles Langley Rutter. She died in 1903. I found no trace of him in NSW, but I did find this Charles Langley in Brisbane. Just trying to confirm whether he is the right one. His Cemetery record states that he was 72 at the time, this fits the age.

I also think he remarried. To whom I'm not exactly certain at this stage.

Interestingly he had a grandson Reverend Canon Arthur Percival Rutter who died at Stawell in December 1991 and is said to have been quite a good artist.
I have his Sydney Morning Herald death notice. Any suggestions of whether there might be any parish details on his life would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks
Wren

Australia Lookups completed / Eva MAy Judd
« on: Saturday 15 November 08 10:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All
I'm looking for Eva May Judd. Eva May was the daughter of Elizabeth Dowling, born Mittagong NSW on `14th Dec 1886. She was brought up as the daughter of Elizabeth's parents, William and Catherine Dowling.
It appears that Eva never discovered her true parentage e.g. NSW Death registration ( only discovered this morning)and familial obituaries that listed her as a sister rather than a niece.

She marrried William Judd and lived in Woodbine St Bowral until at least 1955 when William died. My problem is I have been unable to locate a burial for Eva. Her death was registered as Ena rather than Eva, 1967 Balmain. She doesn't appear to have had a probate record and she doesn't appear to have been buried at Rookwood. I'm not even really certain as to why she was at Balmain.

Any suggestions on where I could go to next would be gratefully accepted.
I have traced some of her children and their marriages, but at present have reached a dead end.

Perhaps the death cert is my only option.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Wedding 1904
« on: Wednesday 08 October 08 11:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
I was given this photo of the younger Mary Jane and Frank Arthur Walton today. It is supposed to be their wedding day?Frank and Mary were married at Gundagai NSW on 8th September 1904.
I'm not really certain that the two people in the "wedding photo" are Frank and Mary.
Looking at other later photos of Frank and Mary only served to cloud the issue.
I have included a 1957 photo of Frank with a 1943 inset of Mary.
Objective comparisons and opinions  on the two sets of photos would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards

Australia / Wilmot Sedgewick Middleton
« on: Friday 15 August 08 10:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
Have been doing research on a Wilmot Sedgewick Middleton for my My Mt Murray School History. Mt Murray was a tiny bush school at the top of Macquarie Pass in NSW. Wilmot Sedgewick Middleton was a teacher there inc 1913-1916 when he joined the army and served overseas. I have a photo of him with his class in 1915. I know that he was also a pharmacist and owned a pharmacy at Abbotsford in Sydney after the war and that he died in the early 1950s. I rang the pharmacy which is still under the Middleton name, no-one knew anything about him. I also know that he married Ella Brooker. However thats about it. I also know that he was a good teacher and that his students loved him. I was fortunate enough to talk to my great aunt who was one of his students before her death in 1995.  I have searched his teacher records and read all Archive documents relating to the school. I would love to fill in the missing gaps. Put some flesh on the bones so to speak. Locate later photos.  I have located his army record, his death notice.
Tried to locate surviving children (to no avail). It appears that he had a brother Victor Ritchie who preceded him at Mt Murray. Details on Victor are somewhat more scarce. Would dearly love to put some flesh on Victor's details too. Have checked NSW BDMs,  have those details.
Any suggestions as to where I might next search would be gratefully accepted.

Australia / William DOWLING
« on: Monday 21 July 08 11:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
I wonder if anyone has any suggestions as to where I might check next. I have a William Dowling who came from London c 1830. Neither his marriage nor his death certificate indicate exactly where. His birth date is estimated c 1818. His death cert states he was 83 years of age  died 27th May 1901 at Mittagong NSW. The death register gives no indication of arrival date or ship. His cert states he was in the country for 71 years. Father's name William Dowling, no mother listed.
This means he was approximately 11 or 12 when he arrived.
Marriage cert dated 1853 gives no other personal details.

I with another rellie have checked shipping several times under Dowling and Dooley, and have gone to the NSW Archives site and checked the new additions.

Does anyone have any idea where else we might check?

Hi All
I have these two photos both marked George Rowley Walton. However I think there has been a mistake by the person who wrote the names on the photo. I feel that the younger photo is actually the son George Francis rather than the father George Rowley.

My reasons are the dress style and the facial features. I think that the younger man is incorrectly dressed for the period. mid 1800's. His dress style to me represents the 1890s.
The  photo of the younger man is a copy and the person who gave it to me is unsure were the original might be.
We are certain that the mourning card is George Rowley Walton.

If anyone has any thoughts, opinions, ideas, all are gratefully accepted.

Australia Lookups completed / George Walton Publican
« on: Tuesday 01 July 08 09:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
I'm still chasing these elusive Waltons. I have obtained a birth certificate for Blanche Mary Walton dated 22nd February 1873. Sadly the writing is deplorable and at the moment I'm unable to decipher the street name. However it does verify that her father George Walton was a publican in Richmond Victoria at this time.

Tetlow compiled a list of Victorian Publicans- this list is held in the Vic state library. I was wondering whether anyone has access to this list, and if so whether they might be kind enough to look up George Walton so that I might obtain a clearer picture of exactly where the hotel was and when he was publican. Always assuming that he was actually the publican and not just managing the establishment.

Many thanks

Somerset / Bridgewater riot 1833
« on: Monday 09 June 08 13:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
Does anyone have any knowledge of the Bridgewater Riot dated 1833. A Bridgewater Advertiser index mentioned Harriet Stacey as a witness to this riot articles dated 8th April 1833 and 22nd April 1833. Just wondered whether it might have something to do with either industrial or agricultural unrest. Harriet was my gg grandfather's sister.

Regards
Wren.
