Somerset Lookup Requests / STACEY Family Bridgewater
« on: Monday 12 May 08 11:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
I'm looking for Joseph and Mary Ann Stacey nee Saunders of Bridgewater Somerset and their family.

They had at least two children John born Sept 16 1838 and Harriett born c 1836.
John's IGI birth record states Bridgewater.

Both John and Harriett came to Australia. Harriett sailing from Plymouth on the Malvina Vidal 1853 and John sailing on the Morayshire in 1856. Forward information on these two and their families is Ok.

Its the previous info that is difficult to locate.

Australia / Memorial Cards
« on: Sunday 04 May 08 11:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
Just a little aside from the general research.
Having looked at the beautiful memorial cards posted by Jo. I remembered that we have a memorial card of my great grandfather who died in 1914. It was produced by the Memorial Card Company of 142 King St Sydney.

My question is does anyone know anything about this company or whether its collection is archived anywhere?
I did a rudimentary search a few years ago, but didn't take it any further.

Australia Lookups completed / Nye Family and Benalla
« on: Tuesday 15 April 08 08:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
I spent the day at the state library yesterday and came up with some great results, thanks to the many leads the rootschatters have given me over the last few months.

In particular I went searching for infomration on Thomas Henry and Jimes Richmond Nye who both died at Benalla Victoria in 1890. Thomas Henry was 21 and James Richmond was 16. It seems to me that they must have met with either an accident or some sickness. I do know that there was a train accident that killed several young men near Benalla in 1890. However, neither name appears in the list.

Whatever the circumstance the horror of the deaths must have so effected the family that they moved to Port Fairy, sometime that year. Their mother Elizabeth nee Brown died on 4th September 1890 at the age of 44. She left behind six other children. The youngest only four.

What a disaster for this family.

There were two history books written on Benalla in the Mitchell. I combed both of these however, nothing was mentioned re the Nye family or an accident. So I'm still in the dark. Perhaps the local Benalla papers might have run some notices, but the NSW state libary doesn't carry these papers and at present I don't have the time to go to Victoria.

My question is does anyone know of any Benalla accidents in 1890?
I would be grateful for any information.

Australia / Edna and Edward Hall
« on: Thursday 27 March 08 10:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All
Am trying to ascertain whether Edna Elizabeth Pearl Hall nee Wilson is still among the living.
I am unsure as to her birth date. However I do know that she married in 1943. I would be thinking that she was born somewhere in the early to mid 1920s or slightly earlier.
Her father was William Wilson and her mother Alice May Pearl Mason. She was born in Sydney and married at Marrickville.
Her husband was/is Edward Gilbert Hall.

I've checked NSW BDMs no deaths, I've checked the Ryerson. I've checked mother and brother's obituaries.
I've looked hopefully at the white pages with little success as I don't even know which part of NSW they live/lived in.

I do know they had one son Roger, who I believe lives somewhere in Ireland.
This was useful as it gave me her married name.
Any ideas as to where I might go to next to find her would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

London and Middlesex / Amelia Sophia Hawar and Joseph Henry Williams
« on: Sunday 02 March 08 07:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All
Am in a quandary My ggggg grandparents, Amelia Sophia Hawar and Joseph Henry Williams were married in Islington in the March quarter of 1843. They then had three children baptised at St Clement Danes, Westminster, London on 21st July 1848. Children were Amelia, Joseph Thomas and Mary Jane. Amelia and Mary Jane came to Australia where they married and had families. However, no family groups appear to neatly  fit the arrival of Amelia and Mary Jane and no single passengers seem to fit the age and time, particularly for Amelia. One ship The Herald of the Morning fits the age of the two girls, but the other names listed have no relation to my current information. Whilst I haven't discounted this I need further information.

From this arises two other issues, firstly where does the surname Hawar come from? I've been searching for quite some time and seem to be getting nowhere fast for an answer to this question, and secondly could someone suggest where I might go to find some information on Joseph Thomas if he remained in England?

Australia / Victorian Publicans after 1855
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 10:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All
I'm told that my George Walton owned a pub in Victoria with his wife Amelia. At this stage this is just oral history. I'd like to either verify the story or disprove it. However, I'm unsure as to where I should go for the publican records for the period between 1865 and 1884. Any suggestions? According to family folklore they were fairly well off as they employed a governess to look after the children while they were working the hotel.
Any help or ideas would be grately appreciated.

Australia / Redbank station
« on: Saturday 23 February 08 23:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All
Does anyone know anything about Redbank Station located between Harden and Jugiong NSW? My George Francis Walton was a share farmer there in the early 1900s. I know that it was managed by James and Ben Osborne and that today it has been subdivided. I located a photo of the shearers quarters on the net. But other than that I have no information.

Australia / Amelia WILLIAMS Victoria
« on: Wednesday 20 February 08 06:58 GMT (UK)  »
Dear All
I have hit another snag. This time its Amelia Williams. She married George Rowley Walton in Victoria in 1865. She died at Morwell in 1884 at the age of 39 years and 7 months. Her parents were Amelia Howar and Joseph Williams. I have checked shipping and don't seem to be able to find her arriving. Maybe she was born here, but from memory I think I checked births and couldn't find her either.
Family history tells me that she and George owned a hotel in Victoria, this would have been pre 1884. This same connection tells me that she and George went into business with her sister and brother in law and that they went broke. At this stage this is simply oral history and I have no verification for this.
Any suggestions as to where I could go from here?

Since my last post I have been in contact with two new branches of this family and have been able to share all of the wonderful information retrieved from rootschat. All suggestions on Amelia would be gratefully accepted.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Crookston
« on: Thursday 07 February 08 07:39 GMT (UK)  »
Dear All
I'm interested in finding out about the origins of the town Crookston in New Zealand.
My ggg Grandfather whose name was William Wilson travelled from Ireland to Australia over to New Zealand and then back to Australia where he lived out the remainder of his days.
However, he married Mary Brown in Victoria in 1864. Mary's mother's maiden name was Jemima Crookston, Scottish of course.
Thus I wondered was there any connection between the town, the person and my ggg's travels and marriage or is it all simply a huge coincidence?
If someone could point me in the direction of any literature on the history of the settlement I would be most grateful
Regards
Wren
