Roscommon / What is meant by "Cotter"
« on: Monday 01 August 22 15:04 BST (UK)  »
Looking at the 1749 Elphin census under the heading " profession" the term cotter appears. I wonder if this is a peat cutter. Is this correct or is there some other meaning?
Thank you

Technical Help / Re: Adding text to photos

Thank you for all your help and suggestions. I have now been able to add space to my photos from paint. I also intend to look at paint.net. I was however alarmed to see the word Linux appear as the most user unfriendly item I have ever owned has Linux in it and totally baffles me.
Thanks for everything.

Technical Help / Re: Adding text to photos

Thanks to the advice above I have now found a method of doing it. Via windows accessories I found windows paint and after I bit of trial and error have found it meets all my needs. Previous efficiency is now coming back to bite me. On uploading/scanning my photos I very neatly cropped them leaving no space for the text. I am solving this problem by inserting them into a document, converting to jpg (using https://image.online-convert.com/convert-to-jpg) and the re-cropping with space for text and thus achieving the desired result,
Thank you for your help.

Wiltshire / Re: Salley Family

A possibility. The 1841 census has a John Sallis b c1785 in Minety which is in the Malmesbury Registration district but about 6 or 7 miles away. There are 3 others in the household. Original very hard to read. A woman age  58 likely John's wife whose name has been transcribed as Frizwith and a younger couple, John 28 and Phoebe 30. Still Sallis' in Minety in 1851 but none of the above.

Technical Help / Re: Copying pictures from camera to PC

Thank you for your continued help. I discount nothing but although I will check it out, I consider a camera problem unlikely as the same situation applies to the card reader. Professional help needed I fear.

I copy from both card & camera. Both have worked fine up with no problems until very recently. I keep stuff on the card but use the Pc for editing and back up - I transfer to a remote hard disc. i would see the pictures, select which ones I wanted to keep, copy and rename them and edit as necessary. I am currently unable  to copy videos to an acceptable standard and copying would have to be done on a one by one basis. I fear it will need another visit to the shop.
Thanks for all your help.
