Hi Dave,

Sounds like my kind of weather  :) It's too cold here at the moment. I didn't like to ask before but if your going gravestone hunting again I have some more.

James & Mary BOSTON

They probably died about the mid 1800s. Mary was another HOOD from Lacock. They were still living and at Melksham on the 1841 census. James was born about 1780 and Mary 1782 Lacock.  Children that I know of are Perrygreen 1812, Alice 1815, John 1818 & Thomas 1821.

James was a Chaisemaker.

I probably have more rellies there, just haven't found them yet.  :)

Thanks for that Pinetree. This will be quite a surprise for Avongirl. I had done a bit of research on William awhile ago but had forgotton. I have him on the 1871 census somewhere too but can't find it at the moment. Think he was a Labourer working on a farm close by.

I'll be keeping my eye out for TOLLITS & COLLITS in the future. Another spelling I've come across is POLLIT.  :)

I was wondering about this too. Yesterday I found a George & Elizabeth PEACOCK on the 1851 census, only Peacocks in Bugthorpe.

PEACOCK George       35 Farm Labourer  (b) Snape
                Elizabeth    31                                Bugthorpe
                John            10                                    "
                George         7                                     "
                Sarah           3                                     "
                Elizabeth      1                                     "

Then did a check on the IGI and the children are the same for Nicholas? and Elizabeth.
Children:
      1. John             (c) 14th Feb 1841  Bugthorpe
      2. George         (c) 10th Dec 1843   "
      3.  Sarah          (c) 15th Aug 1847  "
      4. Elizabeth       (c) 11th Aug 1850  "
      5. Charles Smith (c) 10th Oct 1852  "

And it appears William SOLLITT (b) 1843 is the son of Harper SOLLITT and Maria ?
And Harper (c) 4 Dec 1814 Westow is the son of William SOLLITT & Elizabeth HARPER.

On the 1871 census for Fridaythorpe

SOLLITT  Harper  Head Widow  56   Ag Lab    Mennithorpe
              Sarah   dau-in-law  M   23                 Bugthorpe
              Elizabeth  g-dau           5                      "
              William      g-son           2                  Fridaythorpe
              Hannah    g-dau           5mts                  "

Avongirl I have more on these Sollitts if you would like. Though they don't appear to be related to mine at this stage.

Hi Paul,
Yes, I know Harriet. :) She is a sister to my ancestor George born 1796, children of John SOLLITT & Mary LAWSON. I didn't know who she married but have since found to John DINSDALE she had, Thomas 1826, Eliza 1828, Sarah, 1830 & Robert 1832. Then to James WHITFIELD, William 1834, William 1836, James 1838 & James 1839.

In 1841 William WHITFIELD age 5 and Sarah & Eliza DINSDALE are living with James & Harriet.

John SOLLITT & Mary LAWSON married in 1789 at Sherriff Hutton.
children I have are

Ann 1790          Huttons Ambo
Elizabeth? 1792 Malton
Mary ?      1794  Malton
George   1796    Huttons Ambo
Harriet    1803    Huttons Ambo
Matthias   1806  Huttons Ambo
Hannah   1809   Huttons Ambo

Thanks Kris, hopefully it will help :) Good to see Thomas still has a wife in 51. I thought he may be a widow in the 41.

I found the two Stephen's on the 1881 census. The younger one, son of Thomas seems to have gone to Somerset, wife and children are born there but he is in Gloucester in 1881. The other one is still in Wilts.

Thanks again

I think the Jane GODDARD Rodwell Farm, Hilmarton is my Jane, though I can't find a birth/christening for her on the IGI but have pretty much ruled all the other Janes out.

But in the 1841 census at West Kennet, Avebury which is pretty close I think, I found a Thomas GODDARD age 50  Ag Lab with Mary 11, Stephen 10, Elizabeth 5 all born in county. These kids are not on the IGI either.

So just wondering if anyone could look up the 1851 census for this Thomas GODDARD.

Hi Trish,
I live up near Kingaroy so not that far from you. My great grandfather, Stephen HOOD, son of Abel, came to Brisbane, Qld about 1873 on his own, aged 18. He worked up around this area on Nanango & Taabinga Stations which were about the only thing going up here.

I love the picture. Melksham looks very green and lush. It's very dry up here, haven't had any decent rain since Christmas.

Hi Dave,
Thank you so much for the lovely picture. That is fantastic and all that extra info as well. Rebecca Jane is the sister of my great great grandfather Abel HOOD.

best wishes

« on: Monday 19 June 06 23:29 BST (UK)  »
Would someone be able to look up the 1851 census for Thomas GODDARD born about 1790.

In 1841 he was age 50 and a hemp spinner, living in Marlborough with wife Mary also 50 and children, William 14 and Rebecca 10. Also living with them were daughter Ann 25 and her husband John SIMPKINS 30 with children Sarah 10, William 8 and Jane 2 all born in the county except for Mary.

Any help much appreciated.

Sandra
