No sign of George in 1911? He obviously wasn't abandoned or adopted as he seems to know a bit about his background - i.e father a chemist.

I haven't found him yet in 1911 or William for that matter.
Violet is in Scotland, living with a boarder - maternity nurse.
I've searched in England and Scotland but nothing. I have also searched close relatives, but nothing. I haven't found any outgoing or incoming migration records. I haven't found any school records. Basically nothing until the mid 1930's.

That is true!

Any idea where the Lamont bit of his name came from - is that a family name? If not it could be a clue to his father if it wasn't William.

No idea at all. First time the name pops up is George in 1903. The family were always told it was a French name, but after looking it up, its actually also Scottish.

Plot twist - (and this really is just hypothesizing), BUT, that side of the family for what seems like generations, use the mother's maiden name as their children's middle name. Hence why Violet's middle name is Kemp and hence why William's middle name is Nixon. Could Lamont come from his 'real' father's name? My Dad's DNA results were a little shock, coming back with a high % of Western Europe (this was completely unexpected). Could this be from there..?

Hello Groom,

Absolutely no idea haha!
I've been trying to piece things up, to see if anything links in with the area.

Violet claims in 1911 to have not had any children (when George would have been 8 ). Her death certificate also states that she has no children.

From all the research on both William and Violet's families, no-one appears to live anywhere near London.

A strange coincidence?
On George and his wife's illegal marriage certificate, he says his father's name is John Horn and that he is deceased (chemist is his job). George's son (my grandfather) name is John. John doesn't appear anywhere else in the family. Granted, it may just have been a name that my grandfather was given, but it is odd that he also used that name on the marriage certificate. I don't have the legal certificate and they lied A LOT on the illegal one.

Violet divorced William in 1906, but kept his name, never remarried and even on her death certificate, she is listed as a 'Widow of William Horne'.

I'm just baffled by the whole thing. I feel like I'm trying to piece a puzzle together but, with only 3/4 of the pieces.

Hi Chris

Sorry I have not gone back through the post

George Lamont Horn: 1903-1976
Birth certificate was ordered. William Nixon Horn and Violet Kemp Thomson are his parents (according to the certificate).

Was Violet the informant.
What was the birth address
What was his fathers occupation

Hello Rosie,

Thank you for your response!

Violet was the informant.
The address of birth is the same as the address of Violet's residence which is; 7 Upper Grove, South Norwood, Croydon UD. I've searched the address and found nothing of interest.
William Nixon Horn is listed as a Chemist.

An update after three and a half years!! Some brick walls seem unsolvable.

George Lamont Horn: 1903-1976
Birth certificate was ordered. William Nixon Horn and Violet Kemp Thomson are his parents (according to the certificate).
He disappears from all records until 1930-something, where he is actually in the newspaper. He is charged with entering into a bigamist marriage with Nellie Greenfield (Ellen Linfield was fake name used by my G-Grandmother). They illegally marry in 1933 and legally in 1938.

William Nixon Horn: 1868-?
Unlike George, William's early life is well documented and then he disappears from the face of the earth. Born in 1868 in Glasgow, parents George Horn and Mary Nixon. Lives at home into his twenties and is listed as an Analytical Chemist before heading to Chile for work in 1896. He marries Violet Kemp Thomson, who I assume met in Glasgow. She followed him out later.
Violet returns to Scotland for a year and a half but when she returns William has turned to alcohol and "lost his situation".
Violet actually lodges for divorce in 1907, claiming that in 1901, William abandoned her in Chile and returned to the UK (immigration/shipping record found late 1901). Violet returns in 1902 (immigration/shipping record a few months later than William's) but when she returns, William had apparently already left for Australia.
No more records for William have been found.

Violet Kemp Thomson: 1872-1946
Parents are Robert Thomson and Agnes Aitchison. After returning to Scotland, she has George in November 1903. Violet is listed in 1911 back in Scotland, but claims to have never had children. She emigrates to Australia and lives in Geelong where she continues working as a maternity nurse and dies in 1946. She uses Horn(e) until her death and her death certificate states that she was a widow of William.

Questions that haven't been answered;
If William left for Australia before Violet returned to the UK in early 1902, then William cannot be George's father (b.NOV 1903).

Where on earth is William after 1902?

Why are there no records for George for 30 years?

What I'm thinking at the moment;
George went into a home (or equivalent) when he was born. He was born in Croydon, England, where there are no family links whatsoever. Violet returned to Scotland in 1902 and she is there again in 1911.

I found one record that was a bit later than stated, in Feb 1903, that a 'Wm Horn' was shipped to Fremantle, Austraila and claimed that Melbourne was his destination port. If this is my William Horn, then that techically COULD match up with George's birth AND would explain a little why Violet ended up in the same state of Victoria (albeit a few decades later).

It is a possibility, but William may not be George's father. I don't like to think this as Horn is my family name but, accept this is a possibility.

Any further help would be amazing! Sorry it's been so long since I updated.
Thanks in advance,
Chris

I'm sure this message is going to be a bit controversial but, I'm 26 and it is crazy that a system like this even existed in the first place. My Nan has tried explaining it to me many times and I just do not get it haha.
Then I wind her up and say we should get rid of miles and mph as that's also a system that doesn't make sense and replace it with kilometres and kmh  :P

However, it is probably worth still learning it!  :)

Family History Beginners Board / GEDmatch - Please help!
« on: Tuesday 20 March 18 06:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all :)

So I have downloaded my DNA raw data to GEDmatch. I thought I would be able to get a lot out of it... So far, I haven't taken anything from it. It has to be one of the worst laid out sites I've ever come across. Most of the links (which are supposed to be there to help make sense of it all), don't work.

I've spent the day using all the calculators. I'm taking all the results with a pinch of salt, but I'm trying to get as much as possible out of it, but I am struggling to understand it all.

For example, what is this and what does it mean?;
1 Danish + Danish + Norwegian + Southwest_French @ 0.964049
2 Danish + Danish + Southwest_French + Swedish @ 1.141391
3 Danish + Danish + North_Dutch + Southwest_French @ 1.161246
4 Danish + North_Dutch + Norwegian + Southwest_French @ 1.162745
5 Danish + Danish + Danish + Southwest_French @ 1.181339
6 Danish + Irish + Southwest_French + Swedish @ 1.197221
7 Danish + Southwest_French + Swedish + West_Scottish @ 1.200949
8 Danish + North_Dutch + Southwest_French + Swedish @ 1.213933
9 Danish + Orcadian + Southwest_French + Swedish @ 1.231534
10 Danish + North_Dutch + Spanish_Cantabria + Swedish @ 1.295007
11 North_German + Southwest_French + Swedish + West_Scottish @ 1.309928
12 Danish + Danish + Norwegian + Spanish_Cantabria @ 1.312227
13 Danish + Irish + Spanish_Cantabria + Swedish @ 1.317395
14 Danish + North_German + Norwegian + Southwest_French @ 1.324737
15 Danish + Norwegian + Norwegian + Spanish_Cantabria @ 1.338127
16 Danish + Danish + Spanish_Cantabria + Swedish @ 1.342205
17 Danish + Orcadian + Spanish_Cantabria + Swedish @ 1.351638
18 Danish + North_Dutch + North_Dutch + Southwest_French @ 1.353833
19 Danish + Norwegian + Spanish_Aragon + Swedish @ 1.368205
20 Danish + Spanish_Cantabria + Swedish + West_Scottish @ 1.368780

I did like the 'Predict Eye Color' section. It was spot on! :)

I understand it is still 'downloading' or something like that, so I'm not including matches in this post for now (this may come in a few days).

Any help for now, would be awesome!
Thanks
Chris

DNA testing is still a relatively new process that is being worked on and developed all the time. At the moment, in the grand scheme of things, not many people have actually had their DNA taken. The more people that do the DNA test, the more fun we will be able to have with the results.

DNA testing is far more interesting that the results that we are given. I recommend reading 'The Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy', by Blaine T Bettinger. It is a fascinating read that will help everyone understand more about it all.

Keep in mind that there are people that have taken the test for a number of reasons including; jumping on the DNA testing bandwagon for the sake of it, because they received it as a Christmas present or just because they wanted their ethnicity in a graph. Not everyone is interested researching their family tree and this is quite obvious on the many videos on YouTube, unfortunately. A lot of people just want to find out their ethnicity estimates, which at the moment, are still quite new and which the scientists are doing a lot of work on.

This leads me on to agreeing fully with JAKnighton's comment. Definitely see it as an investment!
Encourage people to take the test (if they want to, of course!) and keep contacting those matches (even if you aren't getting replies). I see the development in DNA technology similar to that of any technology. Things will start of slow and suddenly there will be a boom of interest and quick development of the process which will improve the results and the knowledge we gain from it.

Anyway, just my take on things! :)
Chris
