Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Mother's name please?

I think it says Ann? Black. And the last word is deceased, but what is her maiden name? And am I right about the first name? I appreciate any help!

Ok so I found her in 1871 at 41 Hadden St as a grocer with two sons James and Robert. And in 1881 at 37 Barron st as a provision merchant with son James. In both she is listed as head of household. These records are not from SP though but ancestry. And 1891 census has her at 177 Barron st. as a grocer. Her death record 1894 lists her at 177 Barron St as well, as a grocer. Died of gangrene, signed by son Robert.

Oh dear, this is getting complicated. I'll have to try to find her on the 1871 census. I couldn't find it. Looks like she moved up and down the street a lot. Thank you.

Fascinating, thank you again! I hope I can figure out where he went and when he died.

Wow so the census record says "marr" in 1861. I have her in 1891 census alone as well, but am missing 71 and 81. So I guess her husband is just somewhere else in 1861? Anyone have a clue where he may have been? His son was married in 1864 and he does not list his father as deceased so I guess he may still be alive in 1864. In fact his son lists him as a quarrier on the marriage document. Do you think he could have gone off to work in a quarry or something?

Wow I didn't even know you could look up post office directories that is awesome! Thank you! His address is coming up as 57 in the 1851 census as well so that must be him. His wife in 1861 is living at 37 Hadden Street, Old Machar, under the name Isabella Black born in Newhills (which is where his wife was born). With son Robert Black. She is listed as head of household. I'm actually only looking at the transcribed version on ancestry so perhaps I should go buy the SP record to see if she's listed as widowed. Thank you again that helps somewhat for certain!

Aberdeenshire / John Black of Old Machar

Hi everyone,

I've been chasing my Blacks from Aberdeen for quite a while now with a lot of help from everyone on here. As it turns out part of my work was wrong, I had foolishly accepted something I learned on Ancestry without verifying a long while back and I recently bought the record from SP and found out that I had the wrong parents for someone. So I've had to redo part of my tree. Anyway, I'm back on track now and I'm stuck at John Black b around 1813-1816.

John Black b. abt1813-1816 died somewhere between 1851-1861 from what I can gather.
His wife was Isabella Brown b. 1817 d. 1894

John and Isabella had 4 boys

William Black b.1844 – d.1875
Alexander Black b.1845 – d. before 1851
James Black b.1847 –
Robert Black b.1849 –

John and Isabella married in 1839. I have their marriage banns from SP, but there is no mention of age or parents. I also have Isabella's birth and death records from SP, but can't find John's. His name is too common and though I'm trying to narrow down the results I seem to be coming up with all the wrong ones or with ones that I have no way of verifying.

I'm pretty sure he died between 1851 and 1861 because I have him in census records in Old Machar with his wife and children in 1851 as a merchant, then by the 1861 census Isabella is alone with son Robert and is listed as head of the household and a shopkeeper. So either he divorced and went somewhere else or he's dead. Isabella's death record however lists her as Isabella Black, and widow of John Black so I'm guessing the divorce thing is highly unlikely.

What I'm trying to get at is John's parents, since this is a direct line for me. I don't have any siblings for John either or I'd look for their marriage certificates. If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it.

I just found this site called BillionGraves.com. It looks like it could be a great resource! Unfortunately it doesn't have any photos of the graves I'm looking for. I'm hoping if I let people know about it on here maybe you guys will contribute some of your photos and make the database bigger. :) I'm going to send them the photos I have too. Happy searching everyone!
