Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Census Names Indecipherable?
« on: Tuesday 28 January 14 17:10 GMT (UK)  »
All I can make out is Maggie, Mike and what might possibly be Frank. Any clues as to what the rest might say? Not sure what the last name is either. Also the country name I think says Austria? Any other guesses? Thanks!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: First name?

That's kind of what I thought, I was worried that maybe the first loop was an L for Leonid or something like he suggested, but I think it probably is David. Thank you both for your help! Sometimes a second or third set of eyes can help you feel a bit more confident in searching. I appreciate it. :)

The last name is Kelly, and his wife is Ethel.. However the first name is confusing me. I know what I think I'm seeing but I want to see if others are getting the same thing.. Thanks!

If you happen to be interested in historic fashion (for photograph dating purposes or otherwise) this might be a useful resource. Here are the blog page for the Costume Museum of Canada. They have more than 35,000 garments in their collection ranging from the 1600s to now.

Graveyards and Gravestones / Re: Insightful headstone inscriptions (revised title)
« on: Monday 19 August 13 17:19 BST (UK)  »
I've come across a few that said "Accidentally killed". They were both children. Another one said "Died of the Spanish Influenza, beloved father and grandfather. (he was like 37 years old!) And one of the saddest ones I've ever seen was a 12 year old girl and it was in french so I had to get my husband to translate. It said "I wasn't ready to go". Most of these just made me super curious.

As for sweet/heartwarming ones I'll have to keep an eye out. I've been working on the billiongraves project all summer with my husband so we've seen a number of graves (around 19,000 photos taken so far). Actually last trip we made I found a headstone in the military section of Brookside for a Julius Caesar. I was quite amused.

That's fantastic! All my ancestors that I'm searching for right now are in Aberdeen, most likely in the Old Machar Cathedral Kirkyard. They're Blacks, so if you find any, let me know, I'd appreciate it!

Aww beautiful work Brevitas. Thank you so much. I just love seeing nanny looking so lovely without all those cracks. I like the oval shape too, very nice touch.
