Thanks for that! Although this would make the person in question in his early 40s which means my suspicions are probably wrong!

Thank you,

Henning

Hi,

This picture turned up a few years ago although sadly I do not know who it is, nor do I think there would be anyone around who could tell me... My suspicion is that it could be my Great-Great-Grandfather John William Easterby who worked as a Miner and came from North Yorkshire. If anyone could try to pin down a date on this photo and any other details which might help me to tick some boxes - I would be most grateful!

Thanks in advance!

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ancestry DNA
« on: Wednesday 13 June 18 18:06 BST (UK)  »
I recently took an Ancestry DNA test and I was surprised to find an ethnicity estimate which included a range of 23-43% Europe East. As expected, I am around half English and the remaining quarter, German. This has been an interesting discovery as the only possible explanation is that my paternal grandfather for whom I have barely any information, was in fact Eastern European! Given that my Grandmother was German and lived in Hamburg when my father was born in 1948, this prompted me in to thinking that my Grandfather may have emigrated from Poland to Germany following the war.

I have several matches with cousins from Poland and despite spending hours searching locations and surnames and trawling through public trees, I am struggling to find anything that may help me to find out who he really is... Is there anything more that I can be doing with the information on Ancestry to pinpoint a more accurate match between cousins who are shared matches?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Henning

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Where can I find local newspapers from Grimethorpe
« on: Sunday 10 January 16 22:33 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandparents met through a local amateur dramatics performance of the cricket on the hearth while they lived in grimethorpe. I have an original programme for the performance, although unfortunately it only gives the day of the week and no month or year. I think it must have been around 1929/1930 but I would like to know where would be the best place to look for information on local newsapers as I imagine the play was probably mentioned.

Any help with this would be much appreciated!

Henning.

I hadn't noticed the ring, I think you're right in thinking they must be a couple - I know that Charles and Sarah were married in about 1852 and I assumed Mary and William at a similar sort of time bearing in mind their daughter was born in 1860.

Now that you say they appear "well to do" I think this probably rules out the Walkers as Charles was a servant and later steel works labourer who was the son of a blacksmith and he met his wife Sarah as she was a servant at the same house as him. So I suspect that this is on the other side of the family...

The first lot of people who I suspected it might be are Charles and Sarah Walker who were both born in 1830, the other two (William and Mary Thompson) were born in 1829 and 1834 respectively (so they would all be the same sort of age. Do you think that the people in this picture could be in their 20s? I am awful at guessing ages from photographs so I could benefit from some advice!

Thanks,

Henning

I recently recovered a small collection of old family photographs which my cousin had at the bottom of a cupboard for several years and in amongst these was one showing these two unknown people. She said that it was a picture which her dad (my Great-Great Uncle) had valued and therefore I am trying to work out who they could possibly be based on the approximate date and age of the people.

For the purposes of adding all the information as stated in the forum rules, I think it is either my 3xGreat Grandparents (Charles Walker and Sarah Armstrong) who lived in Sheffield in the 19th century, or my Great-Great Grandfather (George Thomas Walker)'s first wife's parents - William and Mary Thompson (who were from Leeds).

Any help with this photo would be much appreciated!

Technical Help / Registering with Ancestry.co.uk
« on: Tuesday 01 September 15 22:13 BST (UK)  »
I currently have the annual membership for findmypast, but there are a few collections on Ancestry which I would also like to explore. Naturally, I would rather not part with another £100+ on membership to what is a very similar site, however I have noticed that there is an option to sign up for one month premium membership for only £13.99. I would be far happier signing up for this, but how can I be sure that they are not suddenly going to tie me in to a contract which obligates me to part with a string of payments?

Before I signed up for findmypast, I took advantage of the £1 for month trial and was able to cancel it until I was ready to set up my own annual membership - is there a similar thing with ancestry and does it definitely stop any other payments going out after the initial £13.99?

I noticed that they add a disclaimer on ancestry which says: "membership will be renewed automatically at the standard rate each term unless I cancel it (or am notified otherwise)." but I am curious to know what the or am notified otherwise might entail...

Perhaps I am just being disproportionally apprehensive about this, however I would like to know for definite that I can register for one month only without incurring further costs.

Thanks in advance!

The man on the right is definitely my Great-Great-Great-Grandfather and he was born in 1860, so if he is about 50 in the photo it would put the picture around 1910 which I think seems realistic. The first one, who is still unknown, came out of a photo album which was compiled in 1924 and all of the photos in it were taken between 1918 and 1924 (at least the annotated ones were). If he is, as you say, in his 30s, that would put the date of birth for this man in 1894. Interestingly, my Great-Great-Great-Grandfather did have a son born in 1894 called Heth Jones who we don't have any photographs of, so it seems highly likely that this could be his son Heth... Heth died in 1940 when he was hit by a motorcycle during a blackout and I later found out that he was discharged from the military because he was partially sighted (perhaps also a factor as to why he didn't see the motorcyclist coming). There might still be people on his side of the family who still remember him if that's the case, although I'm yet to get in contact with them. It might be "clutching at straws" but now I have a better idea of who it could be, I at least know where to start looking for an answer. There were also ten children in this generation of the family (i.e. my Great-Great-Great-Grandfathers children) and there were pictures of at least six of them in this album, so it would make sense that there is one of him as well.

Thanks for all the help on this thread!

Henning
