Immigrants & Emigrants - General / McArthur Family emigration
« on: Monday 19 March 18 00:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

Hoping someone can help locate this family as I cannot access records outside the UK atm

1851 Scottish Census - Colliertree Lanarkshire

John McArthur, 52yrs, born Campbellton, Argyleshire, Scotland, Coal miner
Margaret McArthur, 45yrs, wife, born Crawford Lanarkshire
Janet McArthur, 21yrs, daughter, born Cambusneath Lanarkshire
Archibald McArthur, 16yrs, son, born New Monkland Lanarkshire
Jane McArthur, 12yrs, daughter, born New Monkland Lanarkshire
Agnes McArthur, 9yrs, daughter, born New Monkland
Margaret McArthur, 8yrs, daughter, born New Monkland
Elizabeth McArthur, 2yrs, daughter, born New Monkland
Janet Crawford, 80yrs, Mother in Law, born Crawford Lanarkshire, Pauper

after this census return the family drop off the grid in Scotland

my main interest is with Margaret snr whose maiden name was WATT & Janet WATT (Crawford) I don't know why she is recorded in this census under her maiden name. Where did they end up & did Janet travel with them?

Margaret's brother William Watt (my ancestor) emigrated to America with half his family in 1865 so it's possible they followed the McArthur's...2 sons remained in Scotland, 3 children emigrated to Australia & at some point some ended up in N.Z.

I would be grateful for anything

US Lookup Requests / Re: Watt Family Scotland to USA
« on: Wednesday 07 March 18 08:53 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you Isobel

I am unable to access U.S. records on Ancestry atm but I see the entry for 1865 this is a big help I didn't check the 1861 census as my information suggested the family had already emigrated. I couldn't understand at first why Janet did not travel with them until I realised she married in Illinois the previous year so she was already in the U.S. as well, More to investigate

                                           Thanks again

US Lookup Requests / Watt Family Scotland to USA
« on: Wednesday 07 March 18 02:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I am looking for some info on the Watt Family who emigrated from Lanarkshire, Scotland to USA in 1856. The information I have is that William & Jane Watt arrived in New Castle Delaware in 1856 along with 7 of their 11 Children. However, I am only certain that the youngest 4 Janet, Thomas, Archibald & Alexander traveled with them.
I know that the eldest Robert remained in Scotland
John & William had already emigrated 4 years earlier
Elizabeth remained in Scotland until the 1880's then emigrated to Australia

I know that David & Jane emigrated to Australia, according to Jane's obituary she & David traveled  together but not sure if they went to USA 1st & then on to Australia cannot find any record of their entry. Also it has been mentioned by Watt family descendants in the U.S. that David went "walkabouts" & was not seen by the family again (he is my ancestor so I know he came to Australia)

Also James did he emigrate with the rest of the family, he is not recorded in the 1861 Scottish Census but reappears for the 1871. Maybe he emigrated but chose to return to Scotland?

Also "Archibald Milligan Watt" info that I have states that he died in Kent Minnesota in 1894 but I am unsure where this info came from or if it is even correct.

I would be grateful for any help with this geographically diverse family

Thank you Johnf04 already done...realised as soon as I posted, it appears Elizabeth did return to Scotland I have her death record & there's no mistake. The 1911 Scottish census, however, has her living with one of her younger sons, Alexander & his young family in scotland but I have a death for Alexander in NSW Australia 1961, which poses the question did Alexander return to Scotland at some point & then return to Australia or did he actually remain in Scotland when the family emigrated at the age of 15. But that's another area to chase up if I choose to go that far. my main issue was finding Elizabeth & I have done that with the help of all you wonderful people

Thank you all so much

Thanks guys

On reflection, Elizabeth & Archibald had two sons Andrew & Robert who did not appear to emigrate to Australia, I presumed they had died in Scotland but looking back they would have been adults if they were still living & could simply have remained in Scotland. The Watt Family researchers from the U.S. branch stated that Elizabeth died in Australia but that could have been just an assumption knowing that she had emigrated here. I will check the census records & maybe order this death certificate, perhaps Elizabeth did return to Scotland afterall. Thank you so much for all your help I have been going around in circles with this one

Merry Christmas everyone

Sorry I haven't been online for a while...a little overwhelmed by all the response, Thank you so much...

Elizabeth was born 15/6/1835 in New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland, eldest daughter of William Alexander WATT & Jane HUTCHISON
she married Archibald Jackson 25/12/1855 in New Monkland, They had 10 children 9 boys & 1 girl all born in Scotland. The family emigrated to NSW Australia sometime after 1881 which is when they last appear in the Scottish Census. Archibald died 19/7/1905 in Wallsend. On his headstone it says "Erected by his loving wife" so Elizabeth was still alive at this point. Then she drops off the grid. She is not buried with Archibald or her daughter Jane Dunbar. I have found the deaths in NSW of her 3 Youngest children but not Elizabeth so I started looking for her son William & his wife Jane (Lithgow) who had emigrated to Australia some time after Elizabeth & Archibald. Nothing...then I found the death of William Lithgow Jackson in N.Z. & started to wonder if William & Jane had left Australia for N.Z. taking the elderly Elizabeth with them. Elizabeth was 70 when Archibald died. While the passenger to London From Sydney in 1917 does fit I doubt Elizabeth would be returning to The UK at such an advanced age when all her children were in Australia & N.Z. & with the exception of a brother (deceased) & sister in Queensland the rest of Elizabeth's family ( parents & siblings) emigrated to America... There would be nothing for her in Scotland

The children of William Jackson & Jane Lithgow
Jane
William Lithgow
David
Elizabeth
John
Alexander
James
I haven't gone any further than this with William & Jane because it is actually Elizabeth WATT I am looking for...she was the sister of my ancestor David Hutchison WATT. Elizabeth is the only sibling of his that I have lost track of.

Thank you all for your help

Hi Everyone

I've been searching for a death for my ancestor Elizabeth Jackson (nee WATT)

Elizabeth emigrated to NSW Australia sometime after 1881 with her husband Archibald & her younger children...Her son William Jackson & his wife Jane (nee LITHGOW) followed a short time later...William & Jane had 7 children in NSW. When Archibald died in 1905 Elizabeth seems to fall off the grid, as does William, Jane & there children...I recently found a death for William Lithgow Jackson on the N.Z. BDM & I'm now wondering if William, Jane & family emigrated to N.Z. taking the elderly Elizabeth with them. Not sure where to start on this as the N.Z. BDM doesn't give parents names for comparison...can anyone help please

Hi Tracn4

Just saw your post about Jane Lithgow & William Jackson..I am currently trying to locate the death/burial of your William's mother Elizabeth WATT...wondering if you have found her...I am a descendant of her brother David Hutchison WATT. I know her husband, Archibald Jackson died 19/7/1905 in Wallsend NSW & is buried in Wallsend Presbyterian Cemetery but unfortunately Elizabeth is not buried with him...she was still living at the time of his death as she is noted as erecting his headstone.

Elizabeth & Archibald emigrated about 1883

David Watt & sister Jane Watt I believe 1st went to the U.S.A with the rest of the WATT family & then emigrated to Australia sometime around 1858.. David remained in the Wallsend/Lambton area where he died in 1909  & Jane moved to Queensland with her husband James Dunlop where she died in 1927 but Elizabeth Jackson (Watt) is proving a mystery after the death of her husband.
I haven't found deaths for Jane Lithgow & William Jackson yet either.
