Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Re: McArthur Family emigration
« on: Tuesday 05 February 19 00:16 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Brian

Sorry I hadn't checked my emails for a while (busy Christmas period) My Janet Crawford married John Watt some time before 1804 I have not been able to find their marriage record so I'm currently looking into the possibility that Janet had been married previously.
They appear together in the 1841 census as John & Janet Watt at Colliartree.
I have a death for John Watt in Dec 1841 in the Old man's Asylum Glasgow so not much info provided there.
Janet is recorded again in the 1851 census living with her daughter Margaret McArthur & family using her maiden name "Crawford" 80yrs old Pauper

They had 2 children that I can find-

William Watt born Moffat Lanarkshire in 1804 (my ancestor)
Margaret Watt born 1806 Moffat Lanarkshire

My ancestors emigrated to America with most of their children - 2 sons remained in Scotland 1 son & 2 daughters settled in Australia the rest remained in America.

The McArthur family appear in no further census returns after 1851 nor does Janet Crawford Watt.
I cannot pinpoint a death for Janet so wondering if she emigrated to another Country with her daughter & family.

I have Janet's parents recorded as Robert Crawford & Helen Blair

                         Thanks again

Hi Rosie

Yes it is! I did find this 1851 Census record but Thank You anyway. Bit startling to find that one of your ancestors was a Brothel Keeper  :-[ I can't seem to find them in the 41 or 61 Census returns. According to one tree on ancestry Mary Ann died 1865 in Buckinghamshire (no documentation) & John Lane died in Australia but I have found no death record for a John Lane that fits or an emigration record.

                                                 Thanks for your help

Thanks Solidrock

This marriage is the one we all seem to agree on however, not sure about the Baptism It could be another possibility

In Australia Sarah went by the names Sarah, Selina & Sarah Selina, she named a daughter Sarah Selina & Selina is a name that has been generously passed down through her descandants. I should mention the Lane family appear to have been well educated.

Hi everyone

I'm hoping someone out there can confirm some information for me.

Information I had recorded on my ancestor Sarah (Selina) Lane-no date of Birth but Baptised 30th Dec 1818 in Finsbury, London Parents John Lane (Shoemaker) & Mary Ann Devonshire. She Emigrated  to Australia arriving 22/4/1838 aboard the Duchess of Northumberland

I lost a lot of my data when my PC crashed so have no documentation to refer to.

I have recently found 2 trees on Ancestry with conflicting information.

One giving a date of Birth for Sarah as 24/9/1818 in London & Baptism 4/10/1818 in Stockland Dorset (confusing)

Both giving the Birth of a sister Mary Ann Lane in the same year 1818 in St Ann Westm (Westminster?) Middlesex (no dates) & a Base Born brother Joseph born 20/2/1814 with a ? as to whether he was baptised as a "Lane" or a "Devonshire"

It is also claimed that Sarah Emigrated in 1834 aboard the David Scott at the age of 16 while her parents would still have been alive in England ?

I would appreciate the confirmation of any of this information. I am starting to doubt my own research.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Gibb/Atkins family Liverpool area

Hi Radcliffe

I did have this marriage but not the Newspaper announcement. Thomas was the brother of my ancestor John Gibb, he was the Uncle who provided the reference for his niece Eliza when she emigrated to Australia. I have not been able to find the baptism record for Thomas, John & younger brother James & there may be more  siblings that I am not aware of. James Gibb & Eliza Ecclestone were married in St Nicholas Church Liverpool 25/2/1805 but there is no record of their children being baptised in the same church.

                                           Thanks for this

Hi Nick
Sorry to say I don't have a great deal on the Gibb side, all I can add to the info on my original post is that I believe & this is still TBC, that John Gibb Snr was the son of John Gibb & Eliza Ecclestone who married 25/2/1805 in St Nicholas Church Liverpool his known siblings were
Thomas Gibb & James Gibb, However, I can find no baptism records for any of them.
The connection I am clinging to is that Thomas was a newspaper editor & he is noted on My Eliza Gibb's (daughter of John Gibb & Mary Woosey) immigration records to Australia as her Uncle providing her with a reference & his occupation is Editor of the Liverpool Mercury. Also the name Ecclestone is passed down a few times through the next generations. So my Gibb research hits a brick wall with John Gibb & Eliza Ecclestone. I have noted Eliza's parents as James Ecclestone & Mary Weston. I do hope this helps & we can find a connection..,

Also I would like to say to Claire...it appears I did not thank you for your help if so I am so sorry I really appreciate it so much I certainly hope this is not the case & I did thank you in a P.M.

Thank you very much Ambly this explains the maiden name confusion

I don't know who this Maggie Watt could be. I have only found 2 children for John Watt & Janet Crawford -William & Margaret and as only 2 of William Watt's sons remained in Scotland when the family emigrated & only one of them had children I'm guessing Maggie Watt must be a descendant of Williams eldest son Robert Finlayson Watt. I haven't delved to far beyond Roberts children as my ancestor was William's son David Hutchison Watt who ended up in Australia.

                                Thanks again for your help
