Hi Barbara,

Thank you so much for this information. I will follow up the leads. My 91 year old Mum remembers his shop attached to my Great Grandmothers house & she used to go through to see him with her sister. She is over the moon at what you have found out.

Many Thanks

Would anybody know of a cobblers in Bury Street Salford around 1930's called Jubinaski? (don't know if that is the correct spelling). The shop was attached to my Great Grandmother's house so would be one room.

Hi,

Yes the other children were all registered, although I can't find a birth for Ina. My Mother was told my Grt Grandmother had 2 other children who died james & Ina? There is a birth & baptism for James but I can't find a death. there is no birth or death for Ina? No mention at all for Mary? When Mary was born if it was 1904, My Grandmother would have been five & a half but she never recalled having a sister Mary, only a brother frank & sister Jeanie (born in Glasgow). My Grandmother & her two siblings grew up to adulthood & all married & had children..
The registrars at Salford were a bit difficult & offhand & told me to get my facts right next time I ordered certificates. I definately have the baptism for Mary with the date of her birth so I did have my facts right. Mary was the youngest child. There were no more children after her until My Grt Grandmother  lived with John Thomas Smith on the 1911 census. He  was widower with young children. They were down as 2 seperate families but living under the same roof? ha ha then she had a son Harold & he took the name Smith. She also had a daughter later but she died not long after birth. My Grt Grandmother & john Thomas Smith didn't marry until 1919 when she was then down as a widow. all very intriguing

Thank you all for your information & help.
I don't know if Mary had any health problems BUT she was never mentioned by my Grt Grandmother to my Grandma or Mother. In fact Mary had never been mentioned at all. It a fluke that I found her baptism at St Stephens Church & I definately have the correct family. My Grt Grandfather left my Grandmother after 1905 so I am presumimg there could have been something wrong with Mary & my Grt Grandmother couldn't cope & she was put away as it was stated in 1911 cenus that another child was alive. There were 3 other siblings who to my Mothers knowledge had never ever mentioned having another sister. All a a bit of a mystery. Salford Registry searched for the birth with the parents names & one or two years either side of the date I gave so Alexandra isn't an option.

Kind Regards

Lancashire / Institutions for children
« on: Friday 02 September 16 08:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I posted years ago about this topic & am hoping somebody can help as I have hit a brick wall trying to find a child.
I have now found out if a child was born in the early 1900's with anything wrong with them  for example cerebal palsy they were called imbeciles! (disgraceful).
If a child was put away in an institution around 1905 - 1910 & they were born in Salford which institution would it be? Would it definately be in Lancashire?
I have found one of my ancesters in Glasgow was put away in  institutions from 6 years old until he died in his 60's, he had cerebral palsy & was called an imbecile!
Mary was born june 26th 1904 & baptized February 1st 1905 to Mary & Alexander Roberston 16 Primrose Street Salford (Greengate area). She isn't on 1911 census but her Mother states she had 6 children born alive, 2 now dead & 4 still alive of which Mary is one? I cannot find any trace of her on 1911 census. Are institutions on the census?
Any help would be appreciated as I really want to find what happened to this child.
