The Lighter Side / Re: 1939 register
« on: Wednesday 11 July 18 09:59 BST (UK)  »
Thanks everyone lots of info and ideas there, I didn't know it was transcribed in columns sounds a complicated way of doing it, all this privacy lark makes life very difficult.

Right well the dates still look the same on the original and as there is actually four entries for this household, the columns seem okay too.

However the household consisted of three sisters and their 15 year old niece (my mother), and only one of the sisters and my mother were in employment. Was there any pension paid in 1939 (showing my ignorance here) if not theirs would have been the only wages coming in the house so maybe she needed to keep her job and lied to do that, if so good for her ;D.

Both of the ladies were spinsters and the form would have been filled in by the elder probably, so upset that these two harmless ladies found it necessary to lie on an official form.

Some of my family told porkies on the 1939 register knocking  a few years off their real age to make them seem younger. Why would they do this? They were women in their 60/70s and at the start of another world war were still working and supporting themselves so why would they need to lie.
Sorry but this really has upset me, they were quiet, unassuming hard working people all their lives so why lie now.

I use Durham Records quite a lot and find them very good they are constantly updating their website and send out information all the time.

Have you tried the Records Office at Durham (totally different site) I believe that is very good,
although I haven't used it myself.

My ancestors moved from Scotland (just north of Edinburgh) down through the borders and
Northumberland and stayed around the Tyne/Tees area.

It's never easy but I wish you luck with your research

Patty :)

I'm from the area and I totally agree with you, some of them are Scots/English border names  I believe.  I've struggled with some especially Richardson for years. There is also a tendency to use mothers maiden names as first or middle names in children thus keeping the name alive, this is a Scottish idea it seems and can be very useful when trying to sort out one family from another. We're a funny lot up here but it does make life interesting  ;D

That's just what I've got Martin and after I've filled it in and pressed continue the birth date section turns pink and comes up 'specify your birthdate'. I must be doing something wrong but I can't think what so I'm going to give up tonight and try again tomorrow. Thanks for trying to help.

Just read your reply Blue think that might be the problem, I've got he same message will look at it tomorrow.

Yes there is are drop down lists from which I selected the month/day/year USA mode, but it won't accept it and I entered the gender, don't know what else to do.

Thanks Martin, yes I did try that but it kept coming up 'specify your birthdate' which I had done and I couldn't get any further. Not having a good day at all  :(, but thanks anyway.
