1841   Argyllshire (ARL)   Killean & Kilchenzie   Killean   519   2   9      Beachmenach
Surname   Forenames   Sex   Age   Occupation   Birth County   Notes

MCMULLAN   Maysie   F   8      Argyllshire
MCMULLAN   Hugh   M   3      Argyllshire

And this is the one who died in 1858, in 1841. The name Maysie/Mysie/Magsie seems to crop up within the two households as well. I just maybe have to find the death for the Archibald McMillan living with his brother Donald.

Wow - have come back to so many replies!

Forfarian - Archibald's death was registered by his son Hugh.

Rosinish - Details on the certificate are: Agricultural Labourer, Widower. Beachmenach. Parents - Hugh McMillan, Agricultural Labourer and Mary McMillan ms McMillan. Cause - (said to be) Consumption about 6 months. Buried at Killean churchyard as certified by son Hugh. Informant - Hugh McMillan son, present.

Argyllshire / McMillan's of Killean Parish
« on: Sunday 20 February 22 14:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks,

Looking for help finding out if Archibald McMillan is the same man, or two different men.

Mary McMillan, Single, 77yo, died 19th Dec 1856 at Tayinloan in Killean. Daughter of Hugh McMillan (Ag. Lab) & Betsey McMillan. Registered by Archibald McMillan, brother, Beachmenach, not present.

My 5xGG was Hugh McMillan, married Mary McMillan 3rd Apr 1799 at Killean Parish. Hugh a resident of Culfuar & Mary of Ruada. They had a son called Archibald in April 1801, died 28th Aug 1858 at Beachmunach. So I am wondering if Hugh is either a brother for Mary who died in 1856 or a father to Mary who died in 1856.

So I am wondering if Archibald (brother of Mary) & Archibald (Son of Hugh & Mary) are uncle and nephew or if they are the same man, meaning that Hugh McMillan married twice, first to Betsey & then to Mary. I can't find another Archibald McMillan in the census living in Beachme/unach apart from the man who died in 1858.

Any suggestions would be welcome!

Thanks, Keelan.

NB - Hugh McMillan & Betsey (Elizabeth McMillan) had several children, their youngest being Florence McMillan 1796 (married McLachlan) who died in 1877, and I share a DNA match with a descendant of hers.

Well that puts a line under that then, thank you for looking into it for me. John & Rose remain elusive...for now

It is possible yes I suppose. It's a shame it doesn't help to try and find out more about the couple. I can't yet track down a death for Rose nor a marriage or death for her son Daniel.

I have found an 1881 England census for Lamesley in Durham.
John Mc Cormick   50
Rose Mc Cormick   58
Thomas Mc Court   23
Edward Mc Court   20
John Welsh   26
Alice Mc Court   22

However John & Rose are noted as being both born in Ireland, and John was born in Greenock. I noticed the young lady Alice McCourt, who was John's niece from his sister Margaret McCourt nee McCormick by her husband Hugh McCourt. Alice caught my attention as John's mother was Alice Dillon. I think it's a bit of a reach though.

1871 census for Scotland

Nancy Mckirdy 55 Head Ireland
Susan Mccall 50   Boarder Ireland
Rosy Mccormick   42 Boarder Ireland
Edward Mccormick 4 Boarder Ireland (though it was Bernard McCormick, 10).

Thats all there is that I can see.

At least the death record for John in 1886 gives extra confirmation of his mother's name, Alice Dillon, as on all of the baptismal records for her children she is listed as 'Ismene' or something to the like.

Hello!

I have found John in 1841.
John Mccormick, 25 (1816). Address - Glen, Lanarkshire. In the household of Matthew Harvey, 25, Ireland, & Ann Harvey, 20, Ireland. (Ann Harvey nee Boyle was the sister in law of John's brother Daniel). And no, I haven't found a Rose Boyle connected with Ann's family as of yet.

John in 1851.
John Mccormick, 33 (1818), born Greenock. Labourer & lodger (general). Unmarried. Address - Foundary Open Farmers Land. Also residing there is a Rose Kane, 40, Widow, Ireland & Daniel Kane, 13, Ireland.

Just found a potential for 1861.
John McCormick, 40, Greenock. Armour St, Glasgow St John.
Rosa McCormick, 43, Ireland. Wife.

Lanarkshire / John McCormick, Milton 1886

Hi folks,

I recently found the death record for my 4x great uncle, John McCormick. These are the details on the record -

John McCormick, Brickfield Labourer, Widower of Rose Boyle. 18th March 1886, 62 years, at 202 Possil Road, Milton. U/r 9 Little Street, Glasgow. Parents - Duncan McCormick, Bottle Work Labourer (deceased) & Alice Dillon (deceased). Cause - Probably Heart Disease. Informant - Daniel McCormick, Brother, Occupier (present).

There is then a revised record made at a later date which reads -

John McCormack, 72 years, male. On the 18th March 1886. In the house at 202 Possil Road, Glasgow. Occupied by Daniel McCormack, Junior Brickmaker residing there. Usual residence, 9 Little Street, Calton, Glasgow. Cause - Natural causes, very probably exhaustion and old age.

John was born 11th December 1813, Greenock, Renfrewshire.

I can't find John & Rose in a census record together. Nor can I seem to find a death for Rose McCormick nee Boyle, nor a marriage record for John & Rose. Would anyone be able to help me find this couple in some sort of record?

Many thanks,
Keelan
