Thanks everyone, sadly the Lucilla lot are not my mum's, the principal of the School of Drama was Raymond Le Caudey, he also produced the 1927 version of The Merchant of Venice and played the part of Shylock, my mother played Portia. The stage manager was Alan Oliver who also acted in it.  My mum's friends Joyce Jacobs and Katrina Kaufmann also were in the cast, if they ring any bells with anyone.

This website has quite a bit about Crane Hall/Neptune Theatre/Epstein Theatre and photos, thanks for your help, at least I now know what the theatre now is, it looks great, a proper theatre.

I have made some enquiries, but not come up with anything much.  I think the school put on their productions at what is now The Epstein Theatre, it was then, I think The Crane Hall. I know she was in The Merchant of Venice there in 1927, but would love to know if she was in anything else.

I was wondering if any records of the school of drama exist from the 1920's, my mother was there and I have a programme from 1927 and some press cuttings, but would like to know more please.

Armed Forces / Re: Finding my grandfather's ww1 regiment

The uncle Arthur mentioned was my grandfather's best friend, his surname was Noon, I don't know any more than that.
He must have only been briefly at the front, as by 27th October 1917, he was back in England at Thorncliffe.  I'm almost sure he was not injured in action, he was ill in some way, sadly, like most people, I didn't ask the questions at the time, my parents died a long time ago, and my older brother and sister also now have died and I have been left with the family bits and pieces.
In 1917 he was 41, I was told he joined up as felt it was his duty, he was definitely a private, and left his family in genteel but very dire straits.

His writing from Thorncliffe is not as good as usual, and the only one written on decorated paper, I've not worked out attaching a photo, but when I have, I will.
It has Russian, French, British and Belgium flags across the top with symbols for each underneath some ivy leaves.

Thank you so much for all your help and interest.

His name was Edward Richard Edwards and he was definitely in France 22nd April 1917. He was from the Wirral and I think in an artillery regiment as he makes reference to Uncle Arthur who is in another branch of the same part of the service , he has the same motto but " our guns are larger". I shall look up campaign medals, thank you, I'm a real greenhorn.

Armed Forces / Finding my grandfather's ww1 regiment

I am trying to find out what regiment my grandfather served in during WW1, I only have some letters to my mother to go on, these were written from Fort Brockenhurst, Nomansland Fort, Lydd, Ripon, France in April 1917 and Portsmouth. I was told he volounteered out of patriotic duty as he was too old to be called up, the first letter is 1916 so I presume this is the likely date of entry. He was invalided out, but I think through illness, rather than injury, and I don't think he was sent back to the front.  All I have is his name and these letters, I'm new to this and don't know where to start and I live in France, help please!
Thanks
