The Common Room / Re:Any answers to this question????

Hi Geoff

I've got a case of a family appearing under one surname in one census, changing to another in the next and then back again.  In this case, the head of the household was illegitimate - sometimes he used his father's surname, sometimes his mother's married name.  He lived in a village so must have been known by both names throughout his life.

Completed Census Requests / Re:1891 Census Look-up Scarborough

Hi Dawn

I'm afraid I've not had any luck with finding your Schofields.  I did run into Victoria Street while I was looking and searched for number 17 - but there isn't one!  The street numbering runs 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20....

Sorry not to be of more help.

Hi Ali

Here's a possibility (but I haven't looked at surname spelling variants so there could be more):

RG 12/1341 f.109 p.27
16 Livingstone St., New Beckton, East Ham, Essex
John H. Gillett, Head, M, 34, Labourer & ...her, Gloucestershire Moreton Marsh
Hannah M. Gillett, Wife, M, 29, Somersetshire: Upton Noble
Alice M. Gillett, Daur, S, 4, London: Lambeth
Sarah P. Gillett, Daur, S, 5, Essex: Barking
Charles F. Gillett, Son, S, 2m, Essex: New Beckton
James W. Harris, Boarder, S, 22, Labourer & ...her, London: Lambeth

Hope this helps

Ruth

P.S.  I should have mentioned that the 16 year old you mentioned was probably Alice Maud Gillett, 6, born Little Hadham, daughter of David in 1891.  And there's a 3 year old Alice M Gillett born in Cheltenham living with her uncle, George R. Gillett.

Hi Sue

Try emailing the Northampton Museum & Art Gallery (museums at northampton.gov.uk).  They have a famous boot and shoe collection and state that they have an index of shoemakers.  See http://www.northampton.gov.uk/Museums/Collections/Boot_and_Shoe/Boot_and_Shoe.htm

Completed Census Requests / Re:1891 census look up for HENRY family
« on: Friday 09 April 04 11:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi Geoff

This is a very long shot, but I've had absolutely no luck with the surname HENRY in 1881, 1891 or 1901 - so perhaps they changed it?

I found an entry for 1891 in Westoe, Durham, which relates to a John H LAVERICK.  He's a 43 year old coal miner, born in Shiney Row, Durham.  His wife, May A Laverick is aged either 42 or 49 and born in Newcastle (I think), Northumberland.  They have 4 daughters - Agnes, 21, school governess, born Shiney Row; Maria, 18, born Shiney Row; Florence, 6, born Harton, Durham.  And they have one son, John J., 12, born Seghill, Northumberland.

Here's the family in 1881:
John H. LAVERICK   Head   M   Male   33   Pensher, Durham, England   Coal Miner
Mary A. LAVERICK   Wife   M   Female   38   Ireland
Agnes A.H. LAVERICK   Daur      Female   11   Pensher, Durham, England   Scholar
Maria H. LAVERICK   Daur      Female   8   Seghill, Northumberland, England   Scholar
John J. LAVERICK   Son      Male   3   Seghill, Northumberland, England

Hi Vivvie

I think this could be the family in the 1871 census:

RG 10/565  f.59 p.18
31 James St., Mile End Old Town
Henry Tagg, Head, Mar, 53, Paperhanger
Emma Tagg, Wife, Mar, 52
Charles Tagg, Son, 16, Paperhanger
Selina Tagg, Daur, 14
John Tagg, Son, 13, Paperhanger
William Tagg, Son, 11, Paperhanger
Walter Tagg, Son, 9
Mary A. Keely, Adopted Girl, 4

All were born in Stepney, Middlesex.

Hope this helps.

Hi Frances

I saw on www.freebmd.org.uk that Frederick Burr and Sarah Alice E. Oliver were married in 1871 (Jul-Sep 1871: Chelsea 1a 377).  As Henry was born in 1866, it therefore seemed likely that Henry's original surname was Oliver.  I had some spare credits on www.1837online.com, so checked for you.  This could well be him:

Births registered Oct-Dec 1866:
OLIVER Henry J., Chelsea 1a 242

Best of luck with your researches

Hi Chris

What a very generous offer!  I'd love to bombard you with requests but I'll restrain myself...

I'm interested in all LANSDELLs in Sussex - could you perhaps let me have entries from your Monumental Inscription database, if there are any?

Many thanks

Ruth
