Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1911 occupation
« on: Friday 13 January 17 17:28 GMT (UK)  »
I'm not often stumped by a census occupation, but this one's got me scratching my head!

It appears to say - Compressor Man on Bye Product
and then - wking plant (which I read as yslant until I suddenly saw it when started typing this)

It's for Horace Solomon (indexed as Florence Solomon on Ancestry), aged 33 in 1911, born Sheffield.  Unfortunately the Industry column is blank.

Any ideas what this says in full - and what it means?

Cambridgeshire / Re: My CARLTON Family Ancestors
« on: Monday 07 May 12 15:23 BST (UK)  »
I've outlined the most likely Cambridgeshire line below.  However, Castle Camps and Bartlow are very close to Essex and Suffolk, so the answer may well lie in one of those counties instead.  I've found the surname spelled in several ways including Carlton, Carleton, Charlton and Calton.

Bartlow, Cambridgeshire
4 Sep 1737, bap, James son of Tho & Mary Carlton
25 Aug 1723, mar, Thomas Carlton & Mary Carbey

Balsham, Cambridgeshire
16 Jun 1700, bap, Thomas son of William & Mary Calton
26 Dec 1693, mar, William Kalton & Mary Page (or Mary Day according to Boyd's Marriage Index)
7 May 1671, bap, William son of William & Levina Carelton
6 Oct 1658, mar, William Calton & Levina Nolton (Levine Norton at baptism)

Dullingham, Cambridgeshire
10 Nov 1633, bap, William son of William & Mary Carlton
20 Jun 1624, mar, William Carlton & Mary Cakebread
14 Jun 1598, bap, William son of Erasmus Carlton

I'm descended from Charlotte Carlton, born about 1807 in Castle Camps.  I can't find a baptism for her, but I think she was probably the sister of your ancestor, William bap.1798, as she was a witness at his wedding.  Alternatively, she was his cousin, daughter of Thomas & Frances Carlton.  I'm also related to Sarah Carter and Levina Norton.

Thanks for the help.  You've helped me focus on the final letters of the word which are probably '...toscope'.

What about 'Autoscope'?  The capital A is a bit messy but the clip of the scan kindly posted by KGarrad indicates there's no further part of the word underneath the clerk's cross.  Apparently Barker's Autoscope was a film studio set up in 1901 at 50 Gray's Inn Road.  If that's right, would a 'Collector' have been a role in a film studio at that early date?

Hi

It's the 1901 census for Marylebone.
Piece reference RG 13/112
Folio 53
Page 43

Or searchable as Morgan Matthews born 1860 on Ancestry and Findmypast.  The latter site suggests the occupation is 'Collector Motorsope?'.

I've now found him in 1881 and 1891 when his occupation was given as 'Baker' and 'Baker's Assistant' respectively.

Thanks for your help.

Any ideas about the occupation of Morgan T. Matthews in the 1901 census?  He's a collector of something - but I can't figure out what!  He's a butler in 1911 and I haven't yet found him in 1891.

The whole image has the reference RG 13/112 f.53 p.43.

Thanks for any help you can give.

United States of America / Re: US Naval Records: John Laver Mather / John Cooper
« on: Friday 03 February 12 13:51 GMT (UK)  »
His grandmother, Sarah Seager/Segar died in Providence on 12 Sep 1854.  There's a brief death notice for her in the English newspaper the Liverpool Mercury (which is how I found out she was in the US at all).  Where should I look for an obituary in the US?  I haven't been able to find the brother, William Mather, after 1850.

As it has been suggested that John Laver Mather changed his name to John Cooper, this rather implies that he wanted nothing to do with his family, so I suspect it's a long shot.  I'm also trying to find whether his father left a will mentioning his sons.

Thanks again for your help.

Thanks shellyesq - that's really helpful!  I hadn't spotted the Veterans' Schedules on Ancestry.  Seems he was in a sailors' home with the wonderful name of Sailors Snug Harbor.
