Thanks very much for checking that out.  This must be a match then as the family lived in Cobcar Street, Elsecar in 1911 and on Edward's passenger list record.

Yes, of course.  It's the Barrier Miner newspaper (for Broken Hill, NSW) and the articles I've found are dated 25, 27 and 30 January 1932.

I've found the details of the inquest on Trove, where it mentions Yorkshire, but not Barnsley. It certainly looks like it's the same man. Very sad case of suicide.

Australia / Edward Power - NSW Coroner's Inquest

Hi
Ancestry has a NSW coroner's inquest record for an Edward Power of 'Bannsley, Yorkshire', but I cannot see it as I don't have a full subscription. Is this perhaps 'Barnsley' - as it may be a match for Edward Power born in Elsecar, near Barnsley, in 1901, son of Willoughby Power and Emily Jane Shaw, who migrated to Western Australia in 1923. Is it likely that someone arrived in Western Australia but moved all the way over to NSW?
Thanks!

Sorry - just realised I asked the same thing before!

Australia / Marriage and/or death: Mary Ann Shepherd of Picton, NSW
« on: Sunday 02 June 19 13:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I've run into a brick wall with Mary Ann Shepherd, daughter of Meshach and Jane Shepherd (Jane Gutthrie) - my 1st cousin 4x removed.  She was born on 1 October 1849 and baptised on 9 Dec 1849 in Picton NSW.  Her mother died when she was young and her father then married Mary Bails late Smith before himself dying on 29 Jun 1862 on Rumher's Island near Picton (information mainly from his death registration transcript which recorded his daughter Mary as being aged 12).

I'd love to know what happened to Mary Ann but can't find anything after her father's death.  Can any more knowledgeable Australian researchers help?

Many thanks, Ruth

Thank you JM. I hadn't realised Family Search has Aus baptisms. I'll try the NSW site for Mary Ann's marriage or death. I know she was alive in 1862 when her father died.

1849 was quite a year for Meshach - he got his conditional pardon then after 20 years a convict!

Hi

I'm interested to find out what happened to Mary or Mary Ann SHEPHERD, the daughter of Meshach SHEPHERD and Jane GUTTHRIE, born in Picton NSW in 1850 or thereabouts.  Does anyone have access to a birth record and marriage or death for her?

Thanks for any help,
Ruth

Thank you so much everybody - I did wonder if it said whisky for a while, but no such luck.

Anyway, I'm pleased he was a licensed victualler by 1939 which I suspect was a much more agreeable job!
