Do you have any idea where in Belgium they might have been?

https://search.arch.be/
 - I see some references here to Ruth Halliwell (just search on Halliwell) - married an Arthur Bell, had a son born 1878 in Brussels.

This couple married in 1873 in Leigh, Lancashire, specifically at Pennington Christ Church.

Can't help with further Belgium info, sorry.

Born in Wigan, Lancs., 1822. Married Ruth Tickle in Wigan on 10 August 1843. Living in Leigh in 1851, at Market Street, occupied as sub-deputy postmaster and printer employing staff. Still in Leigh in 1861, living at Victoria Place, King Street, occupied as printer and stationer employing staff. Had children Sarah (Wigan, 1844), William (Leigh, 1846), Ruth (Leigh, 1847), Thomas (Leigh, 1849), Agnes (Leigh, 1852), Ann (Leigh, 1854), Elizabeth (Leigh, 1858) and Dora (Leigh, 1860). The family seems to have been in Belgium from 1869-1877.

Following being bailed for embezzling £20 from the Post Office in April 1869, Thomas absconded and rumour has it that he and his family had removed to Belgium in that same month.

During 1877, Thomas, with deteriorating health, returned to London where he died in hospital on 27 September 1877.

He was buried in Leigh Cemetery on 29 September 1877.

I am keen to trace any details relating to Thomas's time in Belgium.

When the Leigh Archives are open, you can arrange an appointment to view all local burial records FOC. I don't think they are indexed yet but if you know the cemetery or graveyard name and have the date of death, it's a simple grave address lookup. A pdf of burial ground plot layout can be downloaded online. Can get a bit tricky at Leigh Cemetery in that many graves have missing or otherwise absent gravestones.

Some more recent burials may not be available in this way.

EDIT Leigh Cemetery layout attached.

Thanks, I just wondered, never seen that done before. That is very helpful for researchers as long as you are not naming living people.

Sandra

Thank you.

I store transcripts for myself to make searching easier. I store everything I find in MediaWiki format and as the content has grown into many hundreds of thousands of words, text search has become a powerful tool.

I usually post transcripts on here or other sites on the off chance that a.n.other is researching the same content.

Thank you for the Lucy Pratt pointer.
