Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: John STIFF 1851 - ??
« on: Saturday 09 September 06 16:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi to both ~ sorry I haven't responded before.  I haven't been able to be on the site in quite a while.

ScRoppers ~ His father was Samuel Stiff, borm 1797 and I have the family in '41 and '51 etc, just not John himself in '51...and believe me I have looked.  I think he just must be one that slipped under the net.  But thanks for trying, I was hoping that it was just me!

Amanda ~ Not got any Stiffs in Worcestershire, but a few could have 'emigrated'.  Suffolk seems to be where the greatest concentration are!

Got any more details?  I have quite a few in my tree and we may be able to find a link, although there aren't that many people researching the name.

(Correction to my original post - they were living on the Varteg wth her father not his.  Old Samuel never left Chipping Sodbury!)

Regards

How to Use RootsChat (Please don't post requests here) / Re: Private Responses?
« on: Saturday 22 April 06 00:47 BST (UK)  »
I have been sending private messages recently about not being able to find something out (not look ups).  That way it doesn't clog the post up with useless nonsense, but lets the person know that I am trying to do what I said I would do  ???...if you see what I mean.

The info, even if found, would be highly unlikely to benefit anyone else, as it was too specific, and I suppose I don't want to waste anybody else's time reading my nonsense :( ;D

It's another one of those judgement calls I guess  ;D

I think MarieC is on to something about handing out an award...who know in a few years it could rival the Oscars for glamour...especially with all the tiaras being awarded recently  ;D ;D

The thing is what shape would the award take?  A gold rolled up cert...a RootsChatter bent over their pc...an enumerator's white quill pen... ??? :o ;D...hm I feel another post might be in order  ;D

I know I am always saying how great the local registry offices are...well today was above an beyond ;D

I wanted to trace my ancestor Caroline Lewis, gave them a few bits of info.  Well they rang and said they couldn't find it  :(  Then they rang again a little while later to say it she had been incorrectly indexed as Catherine  ??? :o.  Now I have no idea how they found her, but dedication or what?? ;D  Especially as I had already accepted that she wouldn't be found.

Three cheers for Pontypool! ;D ;D

The Lighter Side / Re: Compounding errors

I think we all know the problems with GR, but personally I wouldn't be without it.  I have been really lucky and made contact with quite a few genuine relatives, including one this last week (and yes I gave RC a huge plug ;D).

Taken in the round I have certainly gained as much as I have given, but I do wish I could put a block on my Jones for the Hotmatches... ??? ;D

I don't know about accepting anything as gospel  :-\...I even doubt my own info...in fact I am getting a bit paranoid.  I have had so many wrong turns that now I can't even believe my own certficates ???

But if anyone wants to look at my tree they can and whilst I do get a bit fed up if the favour is not returned then I can always untick them  :-\

I used GR as my main record because before Christmas (and FTM) I didn't have anything else, but I never claim that it is totally correct (we can all make mistakes and as I am fairly new I am at the info gathering andcahecking stage) and I try to give caveats, if only briefly, and I always acknowledge if someone else has done any of the work.  I have been really lucky, everyone who has given me info has provided at least some of their source data.

I think that we have to accept that there is misinformation out there, but provided we each check what we have and can live with it then the t'internet has to be a good resource.
