Monmouthshire / Tredegar workhouse
« on: Saturday 09 July 05 11:56 BST (UK)  »
I suspect that this one will be too tough even for the intrepid people of Rootschat world, but here goes.

My husband's grandmother (Beatrice) was born in the Tredegar workhouse in October 1881.  Her mother was Emily Walker and no father is shown.  (Confirming the family story that she was illegitimate).

Emily was living with her family in Cwmtillery in the 1881 census, but obviously her parents couldn't stand the disgrace and put her out. :'(

I suppose that is the end of the road re the father - one vague hope, would there be any point in my trying to track down the workhouse records....and does anyone know where the workhouse was?

Thanks

Arranroots,

You are a star.

I notice from your signature that you have a Webb connection.  Spooky! So have I.  My grandmother was a Webb, born Pontypool area.  Her grandfather was Richard Webb, of I believe West Dean - any relation?

Can I just say that these messages are inspirational.  It's not that people around me aren't interested, but they just DON'T understand the highs and lows!

I only discovered Rootschat under a week ago, and already I have had the most wonderful help, and solved one huge mystery (big thanks here to Arranroots - you are a star).

I never realised how sad some of the stories wuld be though...more of that in another post.

Regards

I think you have every right to feel smug and I am extremely grateful for the help!!!  I'm relieved to find an answer...I will now have to eat some very humble pie.  I had told my mum that her great uncle was...illegitimate...she weren't right happy I can tell you..ho hum!!

Once again sincere thanks for the help.  That will teach me to double check everything and to stop making assumptions.

Monmouthshire / Help with a SMITH mystery

I would really appreciate some help.

On the 1901 census my grt grandfather Oliver Smith, is shown living in Brickyard Row Abersychan with his brother William Owen Smith.  Their father lives next door - Fred Smith - with some more of his children.

On the 1881 census Fred is living with his mother and step father in Panteg.  Also in the same house is what looks to be his brother William, his wife Elizabeth and their son William.

All OK so far.  But...I have just received a birth certificate that states Oliver's parents are - William Smith and Elizabeth Smith (formerly Jenkins).  Where am I going wrong??

Hi

This may not be any help, but...my great grandparents lived in Swan Square.  It was opposite High Street, next to the Baptist Church, in what is now Abersychan...I can vaguely remember it, but it was demolished late 60's early 70's.  I don't remember ever hearing Nightingale being referred to, but I will ask around (still got family in the area) and get back to you.

Hi, this is my first time on this site and with forumsin general.

I would appreciate help with a branch of my family that I am stuck on.  My great, great grandfaher was John Stiff born in Chipping Sodbury in 1830.  I know his father was Samuel Stiff, but I haven't been able to find out anything aout Samuel or John's mother - any idea?

Thanks

Julie
