Australians today try desperately to prove their ancestors were transported, wish l had known this when we went to Port Arthur and Botany Bay a few years ago, can't wait to boast to my Sydney brother-in-law and Tasmanian friends. Thanks for the post. Do you have any details on his transportation?

Zachariah and Honor (m.1824 in Ramsbury) were my paternal gr.gr.gr.grandparents through to my grandmother Louisa Emily Giles, born 1892 in Croydon, Surrey. My research doesn't go back any further than Zachariah's family. Looking forward to looking into the information provided in these postings.

Once Robert left Quarriers, there is no record of any further contact nor with brother Daniel so if Quarriers arranged such a group emigration, Robert was not part of it. I have confirmed with Halifax immigration personnel that it is almost certain that the 1907 Mongolian passenger is our Robert, they also noted that these workers followed the building of the railroad all across Canada so he could have settled anywhere but there are no matching marriage records. I found a death record in BC for someone with dementia, in a nursing home, never married and no family. The home administrator provided the personal details and they are almost identical to my missing Robert Leckie. Unless l can access the railroad records, guess l will keep it in the pending file until Cdn census records are released and we can track him.

My grandmother's cousin (Heanney) died in 1905 in the Infectious Diseases Hospital Paisley,  according to his death certificate, which would indicate that it was this hospital that was in Hawkhead Road before being torn down in the 1920s or 1930s and replaced by the mental hospital.

Lanarkshire / Re: Hartwood Asylum, Shotts, Lanarkshire

I'm a little late to this conversation. My great-grandfather (William Haney) of Bellshill died at Hartwood of cerebral thrombosis in 1940. Where do l look up where he, and other ancestors are buried - as GeriK64 seems to have done? I have contacted North Lanarkshire about who all are buried in a particular plot  - not all are listed on the stone, if there is one.

Quarriers recorded that Robert had very bad eyes so l ruled out armed service (but checked the UK anyway), l have the b.m.d. and census of all known relatives in the UK but no sign of him in 1911. I am going to contact Quarriers again to see if any other descendants have requested information, troll through Glasgow newspapers for overseas recruitment, attempt to find marriage or death in both Canada and US then - if all that fails - resort to a professional genealogist, much as l enjoy the thrill of the chase!

Thank you all. Robert's date of birth was Feb 23/1882 and he was an assistant gardener at Quarriers, which ties in with the passenger list.No indication of the date he left Quarriers but had run off several times with a James Carson to find cousins in Glasgow. The term "recruited" caught my eye - by whom? How do I research that and access those records - ads in old newspapers??? If it was organized through Quarriers, it would be in their transcript to me as brother Daniel's record shows employment, marriage and army details but nothing on Robert after the 1991 census.

Thank you for your reply. I did get a transcript from Quarriers, it really confirmed what l already knew. Robert was born in 1882, too old to be a home child but l do believe he emigrated to US or Canada. Reasons: not on the 1911 census, no record of a UK death or of WW1 service, no marriage record,  used many Scotland's People credits for the wrong records with no trace of a death or marriage, no contact with his family after leaving Quarriers. Sent letters to every Leckie in Scottish phone books with only 2 replies both of whom were not related.
Passenger lists contain several possibilities (only one to Halifax with actual 1882 birth date) but with no indication of where he might have settled. Checked census, death and marriage records in both US and Canada with no results. At a loss where to go now and about to give up. He had to have died sometime, somewhere !!!
