Kirkcudbrightshire / Re: Where is Newton in the Parish of Terregles?
« on: Saturday 30 July 05 13:10 BST (UK)  »
Newton, in Terregles Parish is at the east end of the parish, just over the county boundary from Dumfries. See http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/early/os_scotland_2nd_ed_list.html and select Sheet 9 - Maxwelltown. Terregles is the small orange coloured parish near the south-east corner of the map. Zoom in on the east end of that parish and you will find Newton.

Scotland / Re: Missing 1881 census

Hi All,

Are you having a fruitless search on the 1881 census?

I found this site...

Which says that the following census are nmissing from the films (which is what LDS trans were done from).

http://www.ktb.net/~dwills/scotref/18811959.htm

PARISH NUMBER/ COUNTY/ PARISH NAME
124/ Moray/ Abernethy
399/ Fife/ Abbotshall
758/ Peebles/ Broughton
822/ Dumfries/ Dunscore

I knew a significant proportion of the Dumfries census was missing - see post from Audrey in Dumfriesshire...

Not entirely true...

Abernethy, Moray can be found in Abernethy & Kincardine, Inverness-shire (90a)
Abbotshall, Fife can be found in Kirkcaldy & Abbotshall, Fife (442)
Broughton, Peebles-shire can be found in Kilbucho, Broughton and Glenholm, Peebles-shire (763)

The 1881 censuses known to be missing are the second half of Dumfries (821) and the whole of Dunscore (822), both Dumfries-shire.

Inverness / Re: 1861, 1871, 1881 Census on Edward Mason and Margert Hossack
« on: Thursday 28 July 05 10:07 BST (UK)  »
The Edward Mason - Margaret Hossack marriage (04-Jul-1871, Milton, Glasgow) should be available for you to download from www.ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk for a fee. The parents' names should all be given there. As the census was earlier in 1871, try an 1871 census search on the ScotlandsPeople website for each of them, hopefully at the addresses they gave on that marriage certificate.

Scotland / Re: Gretna Green- where?
« on: Saturday 09 July 05 10:26 BST (UK)  »
As answered above - Gretna Green, Dumfriesshire. (Dumfries & Galloway has only existed since the mid-1970s as a result of local government reorganisation)

The marriages that you are looking for are too recent to be online at ScotlandsPeople (only marriages more than 75 years ago are allowed to be online under current legislation). More recent marriage certificates can be viewed at New Register House, Edinburgh.

The marriages at the anvil in the blacksmith's at Gretna Green ceased to have legal meaning after the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1939, which came into force in July 1940. Ceremonial marriages can still be done at the blacksmith's, but the couple have to go to the Registrar's office (or a church) to have a marriage proper carried out for it to be a legally recognised marriage.

I have 5 generations of ancestors who stayed in and around Ratho. I am familiar with a number of the place names local to Ratho. It is about 5 miles from home. What place names are you looking for?
