Antrim / Seeking the Father of William Henry Ridgway Shankhill, Antrim.
« on: Thursday 09 July 20 14:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I hope everyone is keeping safe  :)

I am struggling to find the father of William Henry Ridgway, born about 1896, Shankhill, Antrim, Northern Ireland, and died 1st July 1916 at the battle of the Somme.

I have William Henry on the 1911 Irish census, living at home aged 15 years together with siblings Rachel and Charles Frank, and his mother, Mary Elizabeth Ridgway.
Mary Elizabeth is aged 55 years and a widow, the census also shows she was married for 30 years, I am looking for her husband and a possible marriage if possible, could anyone offer any recommendation of where to go from here? as I am struggling a bit.

Many thanks in anticipation of your kind replies, and my very best regards always.

Frank.

Europe / Paul John FREI, born Zurich 1910.....Any help needed please.
« on: Thursday 14 November 19 21:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am helping a friend who is trying to find out about her Grandfathers early life.

Paul John Frei was born on the  2 August 1910 in Oerlikon, Zürich, Switzerland, his Father was Otto Frei but no details are known about his mother.

Paul was released in 1940 in England where he was held as a enemy alien during world war two and went on to change his name to Paul John Graham while serving with the British forces, marriage, children etc is mostly known.

Is anyone able to shed any light on his early life in Switzerland, he may be of German descent, my friend would love to know of his arrival in the UK and his mother, the husband of Otto.

Any help would be really appreciated and gratefully received.

Many thanks for reading my post and as always my very best regards

Hi, below is a photograph, sadly a poor one, of a name written on a box which contains a cased German,  Imperial second class Eisernes Kreuz (Iron Cross), the date is 24 / 5 / 16,  (24th of May 1916).

Would it be at all possible for anyone to read the name, I suspect it may well be the recipient, I have tried to make it out but am having no success.

Many thanks in anticipation of any kind replies, and as always my very best regards.

World War Two / Could someone help with a Navy record please.
« on: Thursday 28 March 19 12:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I am trying to help a friend with a query on her Grandfathers Navy Service rtecord.

We are trying to figure out what he was involved in, there are he names of various Vessels / Shore establishments on it and the word "Copra",   "Combined Operations Pay Records & Accounts"?

What does his mean, is it possible that he was attached to the combined operation section, on a vessel / landing craft in support of Commandos or Marines, I notice that the dates he came under that heading were from 1st of June 1944 until the 31st of October 1945 and he has he "Non Substantive" rating of "A.A.3, (Anti Aircraft Rating 3rd class?)

Any help would as always be greatly received, many thanks for reading my post and as always my very best regards.

« on: Wednesday 30 January 19 12:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have a postcard with a photograph of a German WWI soldier on it, it has not been posted but has some writing on the reverse, could some one be able to translate it please, I am wondering if it gives any clue as to the person on the front.

Just to add, he is not a ancestor, the postcard is one of a number I have showing soldiers from the Great War.
Any help as always would be very gratefully received.

Many thanks and, as always my very best regards.

Europe / Searching for a burial at St. Lambertus in Helden The Netherlands June 1919.
« on: Thursday 17 January 19 19:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hello  :) I am looking for help in trying to locate a burial:

Elisabeth Kempen (Born Verheijen as her mother was not married to my Great Grandfather at that time) was born in Helden on the  23 March 1894, she married Martinus Lemmen on the 22nd of February 1915 in Maasbree and had a child, Karel Henricus Lemmen in May of that year.

Elisabeth died on Tuesday 17th June 1919 at the age of 25, seven months before her son, and is probably buried in the parish of St. Lambertus in Helden, does anyone know if any records exist online for the parish, I am trying to find out if a grave is still in existence or not, up until I started doing my mothers side of the family no one knew she even existed, in fact it was a member of Rootschat who found me the marriage record of my Great Grandparents and the note of the "Adoption" of Elisabeth to my Great Grandfather.

Any help or tips on how to proceed would be very welcome and greatfully received.

My very best regards always.

The Lighter Side / An early and unexpected Xmas gift from the past.
« on: Friday 21 December 18 18:32 GMT (UK)  »
So, an exciting and somewhat emotional day on the family history front..............................
Having found another photograph of my Great Grandmother Hendrina Kempen (nee Verheijin) I scanned it to my laptop and enlarged it for a good look................................

Sharp intake of breath  :o :o :o  and a dash upstairs, to look in a box of bits I have had for about a donkeys age.............. Speechless! dash back downstairs and a quick comparison, I haven't known what I've possessed until today.............................

My Great Grandma's pendant,  :o :o :o a Dutch coin turned into a piece of jewelry, I always knew it was a coin but had no idea who it belonged to................

I just had to share it ........................................

Hello  :) I have recently received a photograph from my mother, on the back was wrote in my Grandmother's hand, "My mothers family, Goole". I have for a long, long time looked for a photograph of her Grandfather (my 2 x Great Grandfather) who was a sea captain on the Home Trade runs, the photograph shows him in a jacket with a double row of buttons and braiding around the cuffs, this is the proof I needed that it is indeed him  ;D

Would it be possible for you greatly talented people to clean it up a bit, or is it in too poor condition.

As always, any help would be greatly appreciated  :)

Thank you for reading my post and as always my very best regards.

Frank.
