The Common Room / Turkish Medal/Coin
« on: Wednesday 14 September 22 10:45 BST (UK)  »
I am currently clearing my aunt and uncle's house. And came across a Turkish medal/coin with very little on it. It has the side view of, who I believe, is Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The only words are 'Turkish Republic' with no date. And it's blank on the back. I suspect it may be a tourist thing but wondered if anyone has seen something similar and could help identify what it is.

Thanks

Could anyone given me an estimated date for this photograph based on what the subject is wearing?

Many thanks

The Common Room / Terrible Trees On Ancestry
« on: Saturday 20 April 19 12:36 BST (UK)  »
I am sure this has been discussed and talked about till the cows come home. However I need to vent.

I am tidying up some 1st cousins 4 x removed, so not close family. I had the usual 'Ancestry Member Tree' hint. I always click to see how information compares and if I see something that I think may be interesting or correct I'll go away and research it properly and see if it fits. Anyway, this tree had the "William Reynolds' I was working on, same date and place of birth. The same two census I had found 1861 and 1871 and then, which is what surprised me, His 'possible arrival' (that was actually written on the profile) on the 6th Mar 1871 in Australia along with a death in Australia in 1875. That struck me as odd, so I checked the date of the census that year and of course it was on the 2nd April after 'William's arrival'.

Now this tree has over 5000 people on it and it isn't, what I term, a dead profile (someone who hasn't logged on for a year or two. The tree owner was online 2 days ago.

How difficult is it to just take 5 mins to actually research this stuff properly, even if the person is an extremely distant relative and has been dead for 150 years? This duff research has already been copied once by another half baked tree, so inevitably will be again.

I have seen this so many times before, as I am sure lots of people have, and never done anything about it. However today I had to leave a comment explaining that the profile was information was a confusion or more than one William Reynolds.

It is so frustrating that this happens!

If anyone has gotten this far. Have a lovely day. The sun is out (in the South East of England at least) which always helps.

The Common Room / Where to go next?
« on: Thursday 28 March 19 19:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I have hit a stumbling block in regards to the parentage of my 3 x g grandmother Dianna Lanes.

She was baptised on 2 Jan 1820. Mother Elizabeth Lanes, Servant. No father.

When Dianna marries George Doble in 1845 in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire she states that Samuel Stimson, Farmer, Lincolnshire is her father.

After research I had discovered a very probable candidate who's dates fit.

I have also come across a newspaper report from a quarter session in 1820 that says Samuel Stimson was appealing an order from the Parish Overseers, which essentially had made him responsible for Dianna. The order was quashed.

Would that have been the end of it for Elizabeth? Would she have then ben left to fend for herself and most probably depending on the Parish for help.

Where else would I be able to look for any further info?

Thanks in advance.

Philippe

Hi MaxD

I have run his name through both Findmypast and Ancestry on the Medal Rolls and no luck.

Robert Reynolds b1880 Dartford, Kent. I have his Attestation papers from Findmypast and it clearly states that he was in South Africa from 18-10-1900 - 5-4-1902 his number on that record is 14549.
Other than the usual personal details and his next of kin, with address, which is the info that confirmed he was indeed my g grandfather. There is no other information to help pinpoint exactly what unit he was with.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Thanks again for the website. Did the search and no luck unfortunately. Their were 2 people in the RAMC with his surname and they both died in 1902.

A search of his number didn't return anything either. Quite strange really.

Thanks

Thanks for that. None of that information exists on his service record, so I guess that is as far as I will be able to follow that up.
