Suffolk / RICHES family of Fressingfield
« on: Monday 02 June 08 21:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Does anyone have a connection to the RICHES family of Fressingfield?

I'm certain that I have correctly traced my family back to John RICHES who married Elizabeth FEVERYAR in Fressingfield 1780. I think John died in Fressingfield in 1814 aged 53 so was born about 1761. I have not found a baptism for John in the Fressingfield parish records.

A while ago I was given a tree that showed my John being born c1765 Fressingfield to parents Joseph RICHES and Mary CHARITY who married at Ditchingham in 1766. This tree goes back a couple more generations in Bungay. I have lost contact with the person who gave me this tree so I cannot find out the source of this information but I dont feel that there is any evidence at all that would connect John to Joseph and Mary of Bungay.

I did find a John RICHES baptism in Fressingfield 1727 to parents John and Elizabeth - too old to be my John but possibly a relative?

Any ideas what I should look for next to either prove or disprove that my John is the son of Joseph and Mary?

Many thanks

Lyla

Hi

I'm still searching for 4 FLEWERS brothers in 1851.  They are Samuel 1825, John 1828, Charles c1830 and Matthew 1837. Here they all are in 1841.

1841 Census Gordon Place, Highgate Hill, Islington (transcr. Flemens)
John  Flewers 35 Brickmaker Y
Susan 30 Y
Samuel 14 Y
John 12 Y
Caroline 10 Y
(beleive this to be Charles)
Ann 8 Y
Matthew 4 Y
Emma 2 Y

In 1851 the rest of the family are here.

1851 Census Holly Walk, 5 Cubitts Brickfields, Poplar (transcr. Flowers)
John Flewers, Head, 46, Excavator (Lab), born Shoreditch
Susan Flewers, wife, 45, born Shoreditch
Anne Flewers, daug, 19, born Islington
Emma Flewers, daug, 11, scholar, born Hackney
Eliza Flewers, daug, 9, scholar, born Newington
Frederick Flewers, son, 2, born Poplar
Emma Flewers, visitor, 4, born Poplar

The visitor Emma is the daughter of  the missing Samuel. His wife and child are here

1851 Census St Annes St Limehouse (transcr. Flowers)
Sarah Flewers  25 labourer wife Poplar
Samuel 1 Poplar

Samuel and John have both been found in 1861 as labourers, however when John married in Oct 1851 he was described as a mariner.

Charles, normally a labourer, wife Ellen 1830, sons John 1858 and James 1859 and daughter Eliza born Nov 1860 Bromley St Leonard are still missing in 1861.

Matthew married Dec 1860 Poplar to Margaret and was described as a mariner. He is next seen in Sept 1862 Poplar when he registered his mothers death and he was still a mariner in 1864 at his daughters birth.

So I know they were all alive in 1851 and that only Samuel was married.

I suppose they could have all got labouring work outside of London or perhaps they had all gone to sea? Does anyone know if there is some kind of a register of mariners or seaman that might be worth looking at? Was there a war on in 1851? Its really infuriating that I can't find them and I would be very grateful for your ideas.

Sorry this has turned into such a long post.

Hi

I just looked at my viewed images on scotlandspeople and was astounded at how many I have collected over the years. One day I will get around to adding the full details to the list as well as the other people on the same page but in the meantime if you would like to know more about any of these please let me know.

Scotland / DEWAR, SYME, KEIR - what's the connection?
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 18:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm going round in circles and could use some fresh eyes if anyone is willing.

I have this family in 1851 Dollar:

David KEIR 60 carter and farmer born Saline Fife
Euphemia KEIR 62 wife Dollar
Gordon KEIR 24 son carter Dollar
James DEWAR 35 stepson Mason Dollar
William KEIR 11 grandson Logie Stirlinshire

I am particularly trying to work out how James DEWAR is related to the family. I know that David KEIR and Euphemia SIME were married in 1810 Alloa so I dont see how he can be a "stepson".  Can anyone find him in 1841/1861 or anywhere else?

On scotlandspeople none of the births c1816 seem to fit except one that doesnt give a place name only a GROS reference 387/ 0160 0436 which I would have to order. The parents are given as James DEWAR and Ann ANDERSON. The only reason this one is ringing bells is because I think (not certain) that David KEIR is the son of a John KEIR and Jean ANDERSON so it might be totally unrelated.

I would also like to find the grandson William KEIR in any other census to try and find out which of David and Euphemia's children are his parent(s).

Known children of David and Euphemia are Jane 1813, Margaret 1811 (married 1839 Robert BROWN), William 1815, David 1818, John 1820, Robert 1822 (married 1845 Margaret PATON)and Gordon (married 1851 Elizabeth ADAM).

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Fife / KEIR family Saline, Fife
« on: Monday 12 May 08 00:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm hoping someone can give me a little bit of advice. I have wasted so much money on scotlandspeople in the past and so this time I want to use my credits wisely.

What I'm pretty sure about is the following.

David Keir married Euphemia Sim(e) in 1810 Alloa and had the following children - Margaret 1811, Jane 1813, William 1815, David 1818 all Alloa, John 1820, Robert 1822, Gordon 1825 all Dollar.

David and Euphemia can be found in 1841/1851 Dollar and in 1851 David is a carter and farmer of 10 acres born Saline, Fife. Euphemia died a widow in 1857 and so it looks as if David must have died before 1855 (typical!).

The most likely baptism of David Keir in Saline is to John Keir and Jean/Jane Anderson in Saline 1788. I looked at their marriage but it doesnt tell me anything useful and I dont suppose the baptisms of any of the other children found on the IGI would help me either.

Any suggestions on how I can confirm whether John and Jane are David's parents?

I would be very grateful for your ideas

Thanks
Lyla

Hi

I'm completely stuck with my Learys. All I know is that Ellen Leary born c1830 married Charles Flewers in 1854 Bethnal. In census records she always states her birthplace as Poplar but I cannot find her for definate in any census before her marriage. Her father was James Leary, a bricklayer.

I have a possible baptism in 1829 to James Leary and Ellen Cokeley from the RC Chapel in Poplar but without further proof I can't claim her. Also baptised to this couple were Ellen 1824, Ann 1825, John 1826, Daniel 1832.

I know it's like looking for a needle in a haystack and I have quite a  collection of "wrong" Learys so I was hoping that if everyone else with London Learys could add their information here perhaps one of us might get lucky and spot a connection!

Lyla

Here are a couple of "wrong" Learys that might be somebody elses "Right" Learys.

Death: 28/11/1885 St George in the East, Princes St, workhouse
Mary Leary, 76 Field Worker, Heart Disease.

Death: 12/6/1856 Lower Chapman St, St George in the East
James Leary, 26, Dock Sampler, Phthtisis, Jeremiah Donovan present at death

Hi

I'm looking for the origins of Frederick Wood a ligtherman (although no appreticeship record exists) who was born about 1800, married Matilda Mitchell in 1830 Limehouse and drowned 1854 Regents Canal (if only I could find a newspaper report!).

Frederick and Matilda had children Louisa (married Samuel Slatter), Mary Ann Amelia, Frederick (married Julia Griffiths), Matilda (possibly married William Green), Elizabeth Ann (married John Sinfield), Joseph, George (married Sarah), Eliza (possibly married Henry Hoare) and John. Some of this family emigrated to Kansas USA in 1872

Frederick Wood junior married Julia Griffiths in 1858 Stepney and had children Frederick (married Ann), Sydney (married Catherine or Caroline), Alfred (married Eliza Flewers) and Anna

Do these names ring any bells?

Hi

We have managed to trace most Flewers families back to two families living in London in the early 1800s.  Several descendents beleive that the Flewers were huguenots but so far we have found no evidence of this. Any sightings of Flewers before 1841 would be most welcome.

If you have a Flewers ancestor, please come and share your photos, certificates, family legends and gossip at our Flewers group
