I think the plot numbers go up to at least 308 (Robert Hackney). Of course not all the graves are well kept and not all memorials are legible, but on the whole it is in good shape and well worth a visit - ask politely and tread carefully!

I will try to attach a photo for one of the best known residents, Dr Dundee, whose name is on lots of the medical certificates for the area.

Antrim / Re: Seeking Beggs Crawford Lineages, Ballycor

Is anyone still researching this thread? William Douglas's children (Eliza and Thomas) are in Ballycor in the 1911 census, well after Sa(u)nderson Bamford's death, and Eliza has several youngsters in the house. Who are they? What became of them? Mary is a foster child in 1901, and then James, Martha and Sarah also appear in 1911. Birthplace is consistently Antrim (no mention of America or Scotland) although census entries are not always reliable.
Fostering or adoption might be very informal at the time. It is the usual long shot but identifying these children might uncover links with the other families in the thread. Everyone mentioned is dead now - otherwise I would not ask.

best wishes

Antrim / Mack photographer, Larne
« on: Wednesday 14 October 20 09:37 BST (UK)  »
Apologies if this has been discussed earlier (or in the photo section of rootschat) - I have a studio photo from Edward Mack's business in Larne, undated but probably 1920s, with number 26137. See attached with the Mack advertising embossed on the card. I don't expect to find the studio day book with client details, but I expect other people have similar photo cards, and it might be worth putting them together to see if the numbers make chronological sense.
Has anyone Mack studio photos of this sort?

Antrim / Re: Mary Harper 1833-1879 of Carnmoney

Looks like this man with a will at PRONI:

The Will (with one Codicil) of James Harper late of Camberwell Belfast County Antrim Machine Maker deceased who died 1 August 1870 at same place was proved at Belfast by the oath of Henry Montgomery of Bangor County Down Merchant Tailor one of the Executors.

D/1870/48/1007/7/169    James    Harper    1st August 1870    69       Male    Belfast(pre-1973 Q4

14 pages of will, 12 June 1869. Premises in Unity St, Wilson St, Hollywood (Down),

- grandson William James Spotten
- son William John Harper
- granddaughter Mary Moore Ellis
- son James Harper
- daughter Mary Rodgers, wife of William Rodgers - must be Mary Harper who died 16 May 1879.

The 1859 marriage names her as Mary Spotten otherwise Moore otherwise Harper. There may be complications with an 1853 court case and a Robert Lockhart. (This is from years ago and I hope another thread has Lockhart details).

good luck

Good day
Does anyone know more of Richard Scott's background? It looks as if he had both Edward Bunting and Thomas Bunting as sons-in-law. He married Maria Watson and was one of the tenants mentioned in the Hertford estate management rumpus and 1872 libel case. Was he e.g. a brother or cousin of William Scott of Magheragall (died 1900)?
cheers

Down / Re: Smy Lodge or Smylodge

I am grateful for a bright suggestion from a Belfast Central Library colleague - is "Smy Lodge" a mistranscription of "Ivy Lodge"? There is an Ivy Lodge near Newry, just inside County Down, and just plausibly in "Mourne", connected with the Swanzy and Corry families who would have been familiar with Rev. Dickson. Does anyone know about this house's earlier history, up to 1819? Note that a different Dr Dickson (Robert, the GP grandfather of historian Charles Dickson) is a few miles up the road at "Woodville" or "Wood Vale", and I suppose he is a red herring. Thanks for any information - and a good New Year.

Antrim / Rodgers-Caruth marriage 1811
« on: Monday 19 November 18 11:44 GMT (UK)  »
Good day
Attached is an 1811 marriage notice apparently for William Rodgers (1788-1868) and CHARLOTTE Caruth (c. 1790-1848).
The families are common around Carnmoney but one problem is that W F McKinney and the Carnmoney baptisms have a JAN(N)ET Caruth. She might (just) be Charlotte Janet or Janet Charlotte; Janet and Charlotte are easily confused by ear - not so easily on paper. For example the baptism book has "Wm Rodgers & Jannet Caruth, HydePark" for their daughter Jan(n)et Vint Rodgers in 1821.
William's parents would be Alexander Rodgers and Janet Vint, but who were the parents of Charlotte / Janet?
I would not rely too much on CARUTH, as it often appears as CARRUTH or CRUTH.

Yes, I fear another misprint can't be ruled out. All that I can point at is the above phrasing: Smylodge in the "News-letter", Smy Lodge in the "New Monthly Magazine", and Smylodge in the DNB.

The Magazine, apparently unreliable on the D.D. / M.D. question, is less likely to be the primary source.

Alexander Gordon has a very good reputation for fact-checking, although he or his printer slipped when referring to the "Whig" instead of the "News-letter"; he may simply have copied from the "News-letter".

I just hope that a bell rings for someone who has local Mourne knowledge. Or that Gordon's DNB bundle of notes and letters (or the correspondence with Latimer, McAlester, McKinney and all the others who chipped in over 100 years ago) can be found.

best wishes
