Wales / NELLY MORRIS - Early-Mid 20thC Singer
« on: Wednesday 13 July 05 16:09 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know anything about NELLY MORRIS - she was a stage singer  She must have been popular in 20's to 40's - I believe she was the sister of my grt uncle, John William MORRIS. (He had an excellent voice too, but never used it professionally)  I don't know much more about her, except I think she married someone with the surname BLACKMORE.
I believe it was her son who sang backing with Tom Jones when he first started out.....

Lancashire / [James] William DUNN - Barton 1881 and BROWN - Manchester.
« on: Thursday 07 July 05 15:39 BST (UK)  »
Looking for family of  James William DUNN  b abt 1854 Barton Manchester. He died before the 1891 Census, might he have died in a railway accident?

Here's 1881 Census Entry:

1881 Barton in Irwell, Lancs.
1 New Row
[James]William DUNN  Head 25  b Barton, Lancs  Labourer  LN&WR Co
Mary Jane  Wife 26  Nether Compton Dorset
Jas William DUNN M 4 Barton (Patricroft is in Barton Registration District)
Alice Dunn F 2 Barton
Joseph  Dunn M 1 Barton.

As you can see, although he was James Wm, he used his middle name.

I believe the reference to his wife Mary Jane being born in Dorset is incorrect as I have found her on 1891, and 1901 census where she is listed as born Manchester like her children.

I am led to believe Mary Jane was a BROWN - maybe father a publican or licks to brewing in Eccles area  - not difficult in Manchester I know  ;D.  Would welocme any help.
I know she was born in 1853.

World War Two / Can anyone identify this WWII Service No.?? + 2 & 13 PARA WWII.
« on: Wednesday 06 July 05 19:23 BST (UK)  »
My uncle was with PARAS in WWII, before he joined them,  he was with the RAF Volunteer Force and other Regs.
He remembers this Service Number, and thinks it was RAF (but it could be PARA or Army too, I suppose).
The No is 1600593
I should make it clear, it was not his service number, but someone he knew - while he can recall the number, he can't recall who it was! :)

I have an abbreviated list of his service attachments, I can understand most I believe, except  'DLL'  - is it the 'Devonshire Light'.... or something?

In case it helps with identifying the number the abbreviations I have are:  (you can correct me if I'm wrong ;D:)

RAFVR  - RAF  Volunteer Reg
GSC  - General Service Corps
DLL
SWB- South Wales Borderers
2 Para 1 Div
13 Para 6 Div
NS - North Somerset Reg.
AAC - Air Army Corps.

I'd welcome contact with anyone interested in 2 PARA or 13th PARA during and post WWII....

Lancashire / BROWN Marriage & Birth look up request Manchester
« on: Monday 04 July 05 18:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm a newbie - can anyone check these Manchester  marriage/birth refs for me?

Marriage:  Mary Jane Brown   Sept Q 1876   Vol 8d Page 213

I am hoping the groom is William DUNN - if so, you've helped breakdown a major brickwall!!! :)  I've been trying to find the maiden name of my grt-grt grandmother for ages!
A few more clues my Mary Jane DUNN b. Manchester 1853, so the bride should be about 23yrs.  I am led to believe her father was either a publican or somehow involved in brewing.

If this is my Mary Jane, I have two possible birth references  for a birth of a Mary Jane BROWN in Manchester 1853.

Mary Jane BROWN   March Q  1853 Vol 8d Page 110
Mary Jane BROWN  Sept Q  1853 Vol 8d 103.

Silly question,  is Vol 8d - Manchester City or one of the outlaying districts - my family were in Barton-upon-Irwell in 1881 and some children born Patricroft.......

Thanks so much,

Gene-genie :)
