Gloucestershire / 18thC LEWIS, NOBLE & MORGAN Families Bristol
« on: Tuesday 23 October 12 14:56 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have a links to this family:

Richard MORGAN and Margaret NOBLE who married Bristol St James Oct 18 1767.
Children (there may  have been others):

Elizabeth Morgan  b 1768 d.1818 married James DENNING Bristol St James 1785  (My ancestors)
Richard Morgan  b 1772
William Henry Morgan b 1774

I am not sure whether this one is related:
Elizabeth Morgan  baptised 17 Oct 1803 as an adult, born 16 Nov 1776.

I believe Margaret Noble was the daughter of John NOBLE  & Sarah LEWIS  who married St Michaels 1734.

Hi,

Is anyone able to do a look up a couple of items in Gloucester Citizen for me:

1.  Tues 8 July 1884  Page 4  'Cheltenham News'  -
Thomas and Emma Wasley charge of assault brought by Jane Hamlin.   Thomas and Emma are my ancestors, I'd love to know the details and what happened!

2.  Thurs 1 April 1886  'Cheltenham News'  mention of William Wasley of Bishop's Cleeve.

Thanks in advance.... :)

Devon / ADAMS, John - Ashburton bap 1764 Burial and other issues....
« on: Wednesday 25 July 12 11:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to establish information and links to John ADAMS son of Thomas & Joan who was baptised in ASHBURTON 27 Jan 1764.  IGI has a marriage between Thos ADAMS and Joanna FUSEMAN 15 July 1753 in Ashburton.  They seem to have had 11 children between 1751-1776

I believe John may be the husband on Mary RICE whom he married in the nearby parish of Buckfastleigh in 1785.  A bit of a mystery surrounds him as both his children Mary Rice Adams and Thomas Rice Adams who were baptised in Buckfastleigh 1791 & 1795 respectively  were entered as 'base of Mary Rice'  The only reason for this I can think of is if John was a Mariner or simply wasn't around to swear to his paternity, and a scrupulous pastor entered them both as 'base' on the register.

I cannot find a burial for a John Adams  in Buckfastleigh, despite the fact Mary Adams remarried as a widow in 1802.  Was he buried in Ashburton?  It is possible he was lost at sea, but to establish that I'd have to try and find out if this family had connections to the sea.

Any help greatfully received.

Warwickshire / TOVEY/HAWKER: Temple Grafton, Arrow, Salford Priors, Alstone
« on: Monday 09 July 12 17:21 BST (UK)  »
My TOVEY ancestors seemed to have moved frequently between N GLS  and WARKS.  An ancestor Richard TOVEY  b 1795 was born in Toddington  and married Sarah Peason of Winchcombe GLS.  Nevertheless,  he appears in the 1841 Census in Temple Grafton.  Two of his sons married in Grafton. Richard TOVEY b 1847 married  Jane Elizabeth HAWKER in 1860  and they seem to have stayed in Warwickshire, christening their 9 children in Grafton, Arrow and Salters Prior.

Richard had two sisters Mary Tovey b abt 1826 and Esther Tovey b 1828  who also appear on the 1841 census, but I cannot seem to find a marriage or a death for either of them.

It is possible  that my 18thC Tovey's may have been from Warwickshire - perhaps the Joseph & Mary TOVEY of Alstone who baptised children in Alstone and Alderton in the 1720's.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone with links to these Warwickshire  Tovey's or anyone who can help me fill in the gaps.

Hi

Can anyone check the original Burial Records for Bristol Sts Philip and Jacob for me?  I am still looking for my earliest ancestor James DENNING. As far as I know my James was born in 1755,  who married in the parish of St James in 1785.  I have found this:

James Duning baptised 7 May 1758 son of John and Elizabeth in St James Bristol.
But -
There is also a burial of a James Duning or Dunning on 13 Jul 1758 abode St James buried in St Philip and Jacob.  There is no indication of age on death, so I do not know whether this is the infant son of John and Elizabeth, or someone of the same name who may be related.   If it's not an infant, it's possible it's my ancestor who was baptised aged 3+

Was it common for those residing in St James to be buried in  Sts Philip and Jacob, or does it  indicate the parents changed parish within 3 months?  Seems a bit unlikely, but it makes me wonder whether the burial is a different person also called James...Can anyone help sort it out?

Other Countries / Barbados: ROCK Family
« on: Thursday 24 May 12 14:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking for connections to  James ROCK  bap 8 July 1879  Barbados.  Mother: Elizabeth ROCK.  He was later acting governor of Barbados.  His son was Victor ROCK.  I think Elizabeth was a Scot by birth, but haven't managed to find father's name nor a marriage.   There may be a connection to the surname SOWDEN.

On IGI  ELIZABETH YEARWOOD   married JAMES ROCK
30 AUG 1860      Saint Lucy, Barbados, Caribbean  but I do not know if these are the parents.

Any information or help gratefully received.

Scotland / Joesph SODEN born late 19thC - fisherman.
« on: Thursday 24 May 12 14:39 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a Joseph SODEN and family - not much to go on apart from the fact he was born in the later 19thC and his family were fisherman.  Don't know where in Scotland, but the family later had connections to the Caribbean.  possibly via the surname ROCK.   The only Soden family I have managed to find are in Kilmarnock, but  father isn't a fisherman but a boilermaker.....
