Armed Forces / Request: Haslar Naval Hospital Record Lookup
« on: Tuesday 06 September 11 14:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've just discovered that an ancestor who died at Jutland 1916, appears on 1911 census as patient in Haslar RN Hospital, Gosport, on Sunday April 2nd 1911.  Does anyone have access to the records at National Archives and could tell me for how long and why he was hospitalised?  His name was Thomas Birdseye AB   235443  aged 23.   According to his service record he was stationed Victory I,(on his record List 15/2 No 28443)  which I believe was a Naval land base.  On 16 May 1911 he began the first of two tours aboard HMS Invincble.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I have a copy of this book for a couple of weeks - I'd be happy to do look ups.   I'll answer a.s.a.p. Do not request here - please PM me or put a request in on the board. The information given is as follows

Name  Age  Adds/Occ   Sentence (Date and duration)  Trans ship  and original source ref for GLS records office.  It doesn't give details of the crimes committed - but does give aliases and whether person died en route.

There is a freeware programme called ScionPC it's designed to be a portable genealogy management programme, and can used from an external H/D or pen-drive and uses gedcom.  It's not that easy to add earlier generations as some bigger programmes, - (or maybe I haven't worked it out yet) - but if you need something light and portable to take to a library this may be for you.  You can import gedcoms, export gedcoms, treepad (people or families), or CSV.

Once you unzip the downloaded file onto a pendrive - just click ScionPC.exe to run.   It holds the information in memory for quick acccess, so the only limitation for data is the size of memory you have. For a small programme, once you get to grips with it,  it seems remarkably comprehensive.  I've just started to use version 7.6 which was updated recently, and I must say I'm quite impressed.  If you follow the link below and click on  'read more' - you'll get a full description.  It's worth a look.

I am not connected to the developer of this freeware tool. I was looking something light on resources (my personal bug bear with FTM) and I came across this one.  It also has the advantage that no extra software is required for it to run (like Windows Net Framework).  Unfortunately, seems only to have been developed for Windows machines.   I'd recommend downloading it from Softpedia site as they guarantee their downloads are virus free (though I always check any downloads anyway).

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / DUNNING Family North Bradley mid 18thC
« on: Monday 20 June 11 14:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have been trying to find a family link to a James Denning who married in 1785 in Bristol.  He died there in 1820 aged 65.  He was therefore born in 1755.  I have tried in vain to find a baptism for him in Avon, but I have just found a James DUNNING ch 22 Feb 1756 in North Bradley, Wilts. Son of William Dunning.
If anyone can find a death or marriage/banns record for him (that wasn't Eliz Morgan), that would cross him off my list.  If not, then maybe he moved to Bristol.
