Travelling People / RIDLEY Family Bethnal Green - travelling showman
« on: Sunday 11 August 13 16:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Does anyone have a connection to this family:

CENSUS 1851
Address: Grimsdale Yard, Saint Dunstan Stepney, Tower Hamlets ,Whitechapel,MDX
RIDLEY, Thomas Head Married   M 47    1804         Traveling Showman   Bethnal Green, MDX
RIDLEY, Mary    Wife    Married F    40    1811    Traveling Showman's Wife    Bethnal Green, MDX
RIDLEY, William  Son  u/m   M    20    1831    Traveling Showman's Son   Bethnal Green, MDX
RIDLEY, Alfred    Son  u/m   M    15    1836       All Bethnal Green
RIDLEY, John    Son    u/m   M    12    1839                    "
RIDLEY, Annetta  Dau    F    10    1841               "

RIDLEY, George    Son       M    0 (2 MOS)    1851    Whitechapel,MDX

I believe this is the same man who was described as 'A Musician' on the baptism of his son Alfred in Southwark in 1835, and probably the same Thomas Ridley baptised in 14 August 1803 in St Mary Whitechapel - son of William and Mary Address 'roadside'.

The son John Ridley b 1838  Bethnal Green married Selina (?surname).   He was also a travelling showman.  I believe they had a daughter Mary, who in turn married James MATTHEWS (I am not sure where)  However, I do know that their daughter, Grace C Matthews born 1894 Sts Philip and Jacob Bristol,  married Frederick G GRANT in 1913.  Frederick was the son of James GRANT  b Cheltenham b. 1841 and Louisa DENNING b. Bristol 1851. Louisa is my 3x great aunt, the daughter of Wm Riddle DENNING and Mary Rice ADAMS of Bristol.

My mytsery is the  only Grace C Matthews I can find so far on the 1901 census born Bristol appears as follows:
CENSUS 1901
Address: 4, Van Manley Yard, Battersea
RIDLEY, John    Head    Married M    62    1839    Circus Showman   St Lukes, London
RIDLEY, Selina    Wife    Married F    60    1841    Bethnal Green, London
RIDLEY, Thomas  Son u/m   SingleM    40    1861  Circus Showman  Cavendish, Suffolk
RIDLEY, William  Son       M    30    1871    Circus Showman Whitechapel, London
RIDLEY, Nella    Dau u/m F    21    1880    Kingston, Surrey
RIDLEY, Emma    Dau u/m  F 19    1882    Windsor, Berkshire
RIDLEY, Rhoda    Dau    F    16    1885    Bethnal Green, London
MATTHEWS, Grace  Grand Dau     F 7    1894       Bristol
JONES, Peter    Servant  Single   M    38  1863   Assistant Showman    New York British Subject

In 1911 just two years before her marriage, Grace is apprently at school  at 3 Alma Rd Clifton, Bristol.

I have not found this Ridley Family in 1861 or 1871, nor have I found a Mary Ridley yet (Graces' mother)  but in 1881 they are in Bethnal Green in a Caravan abd described as 'traveller/showman'.
1891 they are still working as showman,  Address:  Fair Ground, Red Cross Street, St Saviour Southwark.
I believe John Ridley died in 1904 and his wife Selina in 1906.

Dorset / Mary SHORT b abt 1803 was she born in Dorset at all?
« on: Thursday 20 June 13 16:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have this couple in my tree
John GILLARD  married Mary SHORT  Nether Compton Dorset 17 Sept 1836

The OPC for Dorset  shows they were living in Nether Compton with their children 1841-1861.
John Gillard stated twice as having be born about 1801 in Shillinghurst Somerset (wherever that is, I can only find Shillinghurst Kent) and once in Milborne Port (in 1861)  His wife Mary Gillard b. abt 1803 is stated as having been born Long Burton Dorset.

I have searched both Dorset OPC website and the book  'Registers of the Parish of Longburton Dorset' 1580-1812  and cannot find a baptism for a Mary Short at all.  Can someone check another census source for Nether Compton and see whether Longburton Dorset noted in OPC website is correct.  Much to my surprise, FindMyPast does not seem to hold the Nether Compton census so that I can double check the original entry;  as every time I have tried it comes up with nothing.

Hi,

I've a bit of a mystery to solve.
According to FreeBMD  Clara E Nuth  married in Sept Q 1883 Islington  (1b 590) either Wm Issac Arnold or Arthur Skuse.
Given the marriage date, I thought the best place to look was the 1891 Census. In St Pancras  I found a Clara Skuse of the right age (b 1862 Marylebone), but she was noted as the husband of Benjamin Skuse b 1848  Hackney Carriage driver.  Realising this might be an error and Benjamin might in fact be her father-in-law I went looking for an Arthur Skuse,  but I cannot find him.  Can anyone either help me find Arthur or establish if the Arthur of FreeBMD is correct and/or the same man as Benjamin?  I'd rather note order the certificate at this stage as Clara is only a branch on my tree.  Thanks.

I have tried searching opc dorset and 'dorestforyou' and National Archives websites with no luck, but I was wondering whether some kind soul to could look and see whether there is Bond information which would give me the father's first name for the following birth in Trent in 1818:

Robert Brown Batson bap 24 March 1818  'son of Temperance', spinster.

I know Temperance was the youngest child of William BATSON and Mary TAYLOR who married in Trent  by Licence in 1773.  This implies they were from another parish.  Robert's father was obviously a Brown, but which one of several suspects if any in the village of Trent  I have no idea.  Temperance married Rufus TUTTON of Mudford in 1827, and Robert  married Hannah GILLARD in Nether Compton in 1841. Robert and Hannah are my 4x grandparents, Temperance and the mysterious Mr Brown my x5.  I'd really like to know who he was.....

World War One / Robert L Ramsey Blackwatch WWI
« on: Thursday 16 May 13 13:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me find out if I have the records for the right man.
I am looking for information on Robert Lothian Ramsey, as Scot, who served in the Blackwatch in WW1.  On another site I have found several entries for a 2nd Lieutenant R Ramsay MC - but it gives no address details (he survived the war), so I do not know whether this is the man I am looking for.  To confuse matters there is a Robert L Ramsay, but  I cannot find out whether this is the same man as I have already found elsewhere.

I have found this man living in 7 Booths Court Marylebone in 1851 as a widower with his two daughters Eliza 18yrs and Esther 16yrs,   I cannot seem to find him in Middlesex/London area in 1841.  I know he was there as he moved with his family to London in the 1820's.  His wife's name was Susanna b 1798.  I believe she died in 1850.  His occupation was 'brightsmith' sometimes written as 'white smith'.

I would also appreciate a lookup for 1861....  Thanks in advance.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Ritchings of Bristol BMD please.....
« on: Wednesday 24 April 13 11:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Would someone mind checking the following please:

James Wm Ritchings b.bwt  1878-1880  not sure he's family but possibly the son of James and Sarah Ann.  If no birth in Bristol or area I can rule him out.  A James Wm Ritchings emigrated to the States in 1903, as other of my Ritchings appeared to do the same, then he might be family. A US draft record WWI states James Wm Ritchings b 3rd March 1880 but does not say where.  Also FreeBMD lists a James Ritchings birth June Q 1880 Barton Regis, Looks like two James Ritchings.  Having trouble finding a James Wm on UK 1881 census....

Samuel Ritchings b 1868 to James and Sarah.  I have seen the middle inital as 'I' on the UK 1881 census and 'T' elsewhere, would like to confirm that there are not two Samuel's and that Samuel T does belong to my x4 grandparents James and Sarah Ann.

Also there appears to be a 10 year gap in children between the birth of my direct ancestor  Sarah Jane Ritchings in 1853 and the next sibling I know of; Alfred Ritchings in 1863.  Are there any other births/deaths of children to James and Sarah?

I think James Ritchings (shoemaker) married Sarah Ann PINKSTON Sept Q Clifton 1852.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Birth: James Wm Ritchings b 1878 -1880
« on: Tuesday 23 April 13 16:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

There is a  James William Ritchings who travelled Liverpool to NY in 1903 aged 25yrs 4m in August, so according to the manifest must have been born in April 1878.  However,  there I have found on FreeBMD  James Ritchings  born Barton Regis June Q 1880 who might be the same man.  Could someone check these for me and let me know who James' parents were?
Thanks.

Fife / MI's 18th/19thC Douglas of Strathendry
« on: Tuesday 30 October 12 12:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Perhaps someone in the Leslie area can help me.

I am looking for MI inscriptions to confirm dates for Douglases of Strathendry ie
To clarify I am looking for dates of the wife of Col Robert Douglas Cicilia (nee Craigie) and their daughter Barbara.

Both Cecilia and Barbara had TB.  A photo of any MI would be great! I believe Barbara might have been sent to Europe for her health, but I do not know when or where she died.  Thanks.

Their youngest son David was cousin to Adam Smith and his heir upon his death. He married his first cousin Elizabeth Craigie.
