Hi Claire,

Yes,  I'd seen those and couldn't find Richard either....   I was wondering whether there might have been a transcription omission.  More likely the Geneologist website  is mistaken.....

Hi,

Back on the Tovey Trail (again)

My ancestor is Henry Tovey bap Didbrook 1752  - I know this is true because I know his age at death.
IGI (I know) shows a Henry Tovey bap 1752 Didbrook as the son of Richard & Elizabeth,  IGI also shows at least 4 other children bap Didbrook.

Anyhow, until recently I'd only ever found  Richard Tovey and Elizabeth Telling from Fairford.  As has been pointed out, Fairford is quite a way from the area my Toveys seemed to roam  Worcs/GLS/Warks borders.

However, I have found a baptism for a Richard Tovey  1721  Alstone  Warks  he seems a likely candidate to be Henry's father.  BUT,  I have also come across this burial:
Richard Tovey 1 Sept 1723  Parish  Bredon, Worcs.
Of course, if this is the Alstone Richard Tovey, it's back to the drawing board for me......Can anyone find an age for this Richard Tovey when he was buried?

I am hoping it's the Richard Tovey married to another Elizabeth who baptised their son William Tovey  in Beckford in 11 Oct 1717......

I believe Richard Tovey bap Alstone 1721  to be the son of Joseph TOVEY of Overbury and Mary LUNN  who married in Bredon St Giles in 1716......anyone else have links to them or their families?  Joseph and Mary's children seemed to be baptised in Alstone or Alderton  parishes

Thanks.

« on: Sunday 15 June 14 17:19 BST (UK)  »
I think I can confirm and add a bit to the Smeed tree:

I have a Susan Smeed Buzar who married into my DENNING Family:

Susan Smeed BUZAR   & Thomas Henry DENNING (b Bristol 1820), married  Bethnal Green Dec Q 1850  vol 2 Page 59 (FreeBMD)

CENSUS:
1841: ?
1851  aged 29  b Ramsgate  Dressmaker - with husband Thomas - Platt St St Pancras.
1871  St Mary le Stand Covent Garden  - 4 children
1881  7 Wakefield St  St Pancras MDX
1891: ?
1901:  living as widow on own means with son Alfred and his wife  36 Crossley St,  Islington
1904:   Susan DENNING aged 78  died Dec Q Islington - probably Crossley Street.

I have Susan as the daughter of William BUZAR and Mary Ann SMEED.  whom as you say, married March 11 1817  St Lawrence in Thanet, Kent.

CHILDREN:  All Bap  St Lawrence in Thanet Kent

William Smeed BUZAR  christening:    14 February 1819    St. Lawrence, Kent, England
Died:   Jan Q 1842  Bethnal Green ref Vol 2 Page 30.
John BUZAR  christening:    5 August 1821    St. Lawrence, Kent, England
Susan Smeed BUZAR christening:    26 October 1823    St. Lawrence, Kent, England
Mary Ann  BUZAR christening:    4 March 1827    St. Lawrence, Kent, England

Not exhaustive list - there may be other children born)

Confusingly, there is another Susan Smeed Buzar born 1876 in Gloucester who married in Poplar in 1896 - I feel her  father and William must be related somehow for both Susan's to have the middle Smeed name, but I haven't figured that one out yet :)!

I wouldn't be too worried that some carried the middle name Smeed while others didn't, exactly the same thing happened in the Denning side where some used middle name Riddle and others didn't.

I assume  Elizabeth Smeed who married John Black  Mary Ann's sister.  I have found a William SMEED  b 1750  died 1824 aged 74  BURIAL: March 19 St Peter Sandwich Kent - looks like a good candidate for Mary and Elizabeth's father.....

On 1841  Census  I have found a Mary Ann COLE b 1833  living with her parents Wm and Elizabeth COLE  in Unity Street, Philip & Jacob (Out) Clifton Bristol, no sign of the older son William at that address though.

However, nearby a  William Cole, aged 8  b 1833 is noted in the household of William and Sarah MARTIN  living at Baptist Mills, Philip and Jacob (Out) Clifton.

Ii have found the baptism of their son William COOLE Philip and Jacob to Wm & Eliza 1831.
In 1833 surname was entered as COLE  because MaryAnn baptised in Bristol to Wm & Eliz in 1833 Philip and Jacob.

Have you tried searching surname CULL as well.  GOOLE is not impossible either....

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Phineas Brown Susannah Cannings
« on: Tuesday 17 December 13 17:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I can confirm Phineas Brown  married Susannah Cannings Bighton  Hants  29 October 1779
Phineas died of smallpox and was buried St Mary's Crawley 16 July 1808 aged 51.  Therefore, I believe he was born abt 1757, but I haven't managed to find a birth for him yet.  I have found a Phineas James Brown buried in Sneed Wiltshire  1781  aged 54 husband of Lydia - but that is quite a step from Crawley.  Another possible is Phineas Brown buried 16 Feb 1748 All Saints Whiteparish Wilts, but I do no know the age at death.  He might be the same Phineas Browne who married Ann Elliot  26 Dec 1701  Whiteparish.

Susannah appears on the 1841 Census living in Crawley  as Susan Brown aged 90.  As she is living with one Sally Sandom  aged 79, I assume she was living in almshouses.  It could be that Sally was family as there is a marriage between Elizabeth Brown and William Sandom 9 Nov 1816 St Mary's Crawley - likely to be Betty Brown.  Sally may be William's mother  - a Joseph Sandom  married a Sarah Inward St Mary's Crawley 20 Jan 1782.  Susannah/Susan Brown was buried in St Mary's  Crawley Sept 13 1843.
Their children were:
1. Thomas   bap April 30 1782  buried 16 Nov 1866  both St Mary's Crawley  Married Hannah HALL Feb 3 1806  St Mary's Crawley.
2.William  b 1786
3.Benjamin b 1789
4. James  b 1792
5. Betty  b 1795  married Wm Sandom 1816 at least 4 children
6. Martha b 1798

My connection with the Brown Family is through Rhoda Brown, grt grand daughter of Phineas and Susannah thru eldest son Thomas.  Rhoda b Crawley 1848 who married William PIPER of Sparsholt in St Mary's Crawley in 1868.

I have read that some Hampshire and Wiltshire Cannings came from Protestant Ireland in the 17th century, but I haven't managed to establish whether Susannah is connected to this line. I would be interested in know more about the Bastardy Order.

Travelling People / Re: RIDLEY Family Bethnal Green - travelling showman
« on: Monday 14 October 13 12:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi lee,

It would be helpful to know if you could tell me where Margaret Elizabeth Oneal Ridley was born, her mother's name and what her birth date was.  It is possible that you're related to my Ridleys as I have a William Ridley born 1870, for whom I have no marriage at the moment.

Although I have not come across the surname Oneal yet, I have found this and wonder if it seems familiar
Marriage:  William Ridley to Rosie O'Neal Dec Q 1902. Bath, Somerset  ref 5C  1167.

According to the 1911 Census this William Ridley was born in Bethnal  Green in 1874, while Rosie seems to have been born in Kidderminster Worcs in 1880.

As your great grandfather was a showman I find it hard to believe there is not a link somewhere.

Copy this whole link into your browser and download the National Archive Guide as pdf:

American Revolution

Browse lists of enemy prisoners on parole in Britain in HO 28. This is not indexed.

Also bear this in mind at the National Archives:
An alphabetical list of American prisoners compiled by the University of Virginia is available at The National Archives and supplements a general register of American prisoners (1813) in ADM 6/417.

It looks like you need to track down a copy of this General Register of American Prisoners.  If you are in the States maybe it would be worth trying to contact the University of Virginia direct.
Good luck.
