Laois (Queens) / Henry Keane classical tutor Portarlington
« on: Sunday 12 June 16 23:33 BST (UK)  »
Henry Keane was born 1813. He was a classical tutor at the French School Portarlington at the time of his sons birth (John James Keane) in 1845. His father was recorded as John Keane, classical tutor on Henry's marriage cert. Henry went on to become assistant master at Dr Stackpoole's school in Dunloaghaire.
I am hoping that a record of teachers/ tutors may exist so I can find a little more about John and Henry Keane. Taking a guess John's year of birth may be about 1790.
Any help gratefully received.
Cheers

Herefordshire / Eliza Preece married in Holmer 1865
« on: Monday 28 March 16 15:34 BST (UK)  »
Eliza or Elizabeth/ Lizzie Preece married Felix Golden in Holmer, Hereford in August 1865. Her father is recorded as John Preece.
From the 1871 and 81 census in Brecon, Eliza was born in Hereford between 1847 to 1851. Due to the large number of Preece records I have been unable to trace her or family any further back.
Any help much appreciated.

Cumberland / Henry Miers born 1811 Whitehaven
« on: Monday 05 October 15 16:25 BST (UK)  »
Henry Miers was born about 1811 at Whitehaven. He lived in St Bees appearing on the 1841 to 1871 census as well as several electoral registers and trade directories listed as joiner and cabinet maker. His marriage to Jane (Jackson?) produced at least five children. His daughter Mary Ann Miers 1848 was married and had her children christened at St Nicholas Church Whitehaven.
I would like to find a birth record for Henry and to discover his parents names. Their is a marriage record for a Henry Miers and a Jane Jackson for 10 June 1834 at St Nicholas.
Any help or advice much appreciated.

Lancashire / Jane Cornthwaite born Flookburgh 1823
« on: Wednesday 09 September 15 20:16 BST (UK)  »
Jane Cornthwaite was born in Flookburgh about 1823. I am trying to find a record of her birth and to establish her mother's name.
Jane's first marriage was to Mark Irwin 10/11/1845 at St Anne's District Chapel Lancaster. Her father is recorded as John Cornthwaite, farmer. One of the witnesses is Elizabeth Cornthwaite.
In 1848 Jane, now widowed,  marries George Reid on the 18th May in the High Street Congregational Chapel Lancaster. Her father is again recorded as John Cornthwaite , farmer. One of the witnesses is Agnes Cornthwaite.
On the 1861 census Jane Reid is living at Church Street Lancaster, visiting is her sister Ann Cornthwaite.
On the 1841 census Ann Cornthwaite is living in Lower Holker with her father and mother John and Mary Cornthwaite and brother William. John's occupation is agricultural labourer.
From census returns Jane's family members are:
John Cornthwaite born 1779 Lancashire possibly Inskip on 1851 census.Father.
Mary Cornthwaite born 1782 Lower Holker. Mother.
William Cornthwaite born 1819 Cartmel. Brother.
Agnes Cornthwaite born 1821 Flookburgh. Sister.
Ann Cornthwaite born 1827 Lower Holker.

John Cornthwaite appears to be a common name around Cartmel and Westmorland making identifying Jane's father difficult.
There are several family trees on ancestry including additional siblings and different mothers without sufficient source information to be definitive.
Previous postings regarding John Cornthwaite have been made on this site by sgrollitt back in 2010, I have not included a link in order not to prejudice a fresh investigation of available information.

Any help or information gratefully received

Mayo / Mary Mullin 1838, Collagh, Meelick. Maiden name?
« on: Friday 28 August 15 12:23 BST (UK)  »
Mary Mullin/ Mullen born about 1838 , wife of Michael, appears on the 1901 & 1911 census at the same address in Collagh, Meelick, County Mayo.
Their daughter Norah Mullin born about 1877, married John McLoughlin in Castlebar on the 14 Nov 1897.
I have been unable to find a marriage record for Michael and Mary or a definitive birth record for Norah.
I am trying to find Mary's maiden name and marriage record in order to find the fathers of the couple and move my family tree on.
There seems to be a few possibilities of Michael Mullin/ Mullen - Mary ? marriages, including Mary Campbell and Mary Walsh.
Any help gratefully received.

Armagh / Michael Garvey born Cullyhanna, Armagh 1867?
« on: Saturday 15 August 15 13:16 BST (UK)  »
Michael Garvey appears in the 1901 census of England age 34, resident in Liverpool. He is recorded as a dock labourer, living with his wife Alice (nee Donaghy) and children. On the 1911 census he is recorded as being born in Cullyhanna, Armagh. His entry has been crossed through and noted lunatic, so perhaps he was actually living in an institution. His wife appears to be born in Tullyrahan, Monaghan. His eldest son Michael was born 1898 at Castletown? I am trying to find a definitive birth record or marriage record for Michael 1867, any help much appreciated.

Dublin / John James Keane married Rathdown 1862
« on: Tuesday 17 March 15 14:32 GMT (UK)  »
John James Keane and Esther Jane Gibby were married at Kingstown registrars office on 24 Dec 1862. Johns address was York Road Kingstown, occupation sailor. He was recorded as of full age but his birth date from later census is about 1845. His father was Henry Keane, a tutor. The couple had two children registered in the same district; Henry Edward 1863 and Maurice John T 1865, denomination Church of Ireland, fathers occupation esquire. The family turn up in the 1871 census of England where John is now O D Officer HM Customs. John has a sister living with him born 1844, her name has been transcribed as Frances but on the actual census appears to be something different, perhaps Constance. Anecdotal evidence is that  Johns father Henry may have been a headmaster.
I have been unable to find any record of John James birth, family or father .
Any help much appreciated.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Lancaster trade directories- REID George
« on: Tuesday 03 February 15 10:31 GMT (UK)  »
George Reid was born 1811 in Jedburgh. I can find no conclusive census record for 1841. The first record of him in Lancaster is in 1846 when he is appointed as a local missionary for High Street Congregational Church. On the 1851 census his occupation is 'tea dealer' and his home address is Upper Thurnam Street. His wife Jane Cornthwaite may have been a confectioner. After 1861 he moves to Barrow and is still a tea dealer.
I would be grateful if any records of his business exist in trade directories of the period.
Thanks
John
