England / Thomas John MARTIN and Fanny COLLINS - marriage
« on: Saturday 16 June 18 06:30 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Looking for a marriage date/place for Thomas John MARTIN to Fanny COLLINS.

Thomas was born c1864 in Camberwell, London (parents John & Hannah according to his death registration)

Fanny was born in 1870 in Denchworth, Berkshire (parents James & Emma)

The 1911 census they were residing at 139 Kings Rd, Reading, Berks. They had been married for 21 years and had four children (one deceased). Their children Elsie b1893, Thomas Herbert b1896 and Alfred bc1898 all in Fulham, London were living with them.

From when the 1911 census was taken and prior to January 1914 (when their son Thomas commenced working for the NSW Railways in Sydney) the family migrated to Australia.

Thanks any assistance, Bonnie

Thanks Debra, great detective work.
Appreciate your efforts to complete my profile on Eric W. Funnell.
Bonnie

PS: As an aside, found that his paternal great grand father, James, and ggm, Sarah Wright, had been sent 'downunder' as convicts in 1821 and 1823 respectively. So its interesting that Eric stayed in England and was laid to rest there.

Thanks Debra, excellent find.

If Eric was conscripted into serving during WW2, he would have been 43 years of age. Did they conscript men at that age in England?

Researching an WW1 Honour Roll there is listed a Hibiscus Musa Textilus Stephen - nicknamed
Hibie - born in Queensland, Australia, 1891.
His sister, born the next year, was named Passiflora Quadrangularis!!

Eric Winton FUNNEL was born 30 Sep 1896 in NSW Australia and died 6 Dec 1959 in London. During WW1 he served in the AIF #2515

At the end of the war he applied to stay in England. Reasons given, he was to marry on 25 Jan 1919 and also had guaranteed work with a J.C. Webber in Bournemouth. His request was granted.

There is a marriage registration Q2/1919 2b/2059 of Eric W. Funnell to Alfreda E. Carpenter, Christchurch, Hamps.

However there is also a marriage registration Q3/1925 2b/1735 of Eric W. Funnell to Gladys Walthew, Bournemouth, Dorset. On the 1939 census found Gladys (married) and son Peter E.W. Funnell (b.1926 d.1980) but not Eric.

So, did the first marriage end in divorce or did Alfreda die? Alternatively was there another Eric W Funnell and the proposed marriage by my EWF in Jan 1919 did not go ahead?

Thanks any assistance
Bonnie
PS: I am not related to any of the above. Mr Funnell is one of the names I am researching on a WW1 Honour Roll for the NSW Railways.

Many thanks Cando, you were right, Arthur John Brown/e did marry Hazel Gornall in 1921.
In the SMH 19 Mar 1934 p.2 Hazel is requesting that her husband return to the marital home.
So, it appears that this did not occur and they eventually divorced.

Response from WA SL. re Arthur John Browne/e of a death and/or funeral notice.

A death notice was placed in the West Australian newspaper 3 Dec 1977 for a John BROWNE (age 79) who died on 2nd December 1977 therefore I believe this to be the same person.
He was survived by a daughter, son-in-law, grand and great grandchildren (as all could still be living, have withheld their names). No mention of a wife/partner.

Found a family tree on Ancestry which shows that the Browne/Gornall marriage in 1921 produced a son so further investigation needed.

Thanks all for your assistance

Thanks Gerry your suggestion, have sent a request to the WA State Library.

Cando, not sure if this is the Arthur John BROWNE I am looking for who married Hazel GORNALL (not Gornan) as shown NSW BDM #9935/1921.

Have found a death notice for his father, Joseph BROWN, who died in 1946. It lists his (2nd) wife, Arthur's older and younger sisters (both married) and a J. Brown. Unfortunately budget restraints for research of the WW1 HR precludes me from purchasing marriage certificate.

So hears hoping that the WA SL will be able to assist in finding a death notice for Arthur.

Thanks Cando.
I am researching the names on a WW1 Honour Roll for the NSW Railways. Arthur enlisted under the surname BROWN #7452

Found Arthur John BROWNE born 18 March 1898 in Singleton. His mother, Annie Maria nee ROCHE married Joseph BROWN #7247/1898 (4 Dec) in Sydney. They also had a child, Doris in 1895.

Annie Maria died 6 July 1902 NSW BDM #10779 and Joseph married in 1912 to Grace Glasscock #94

Thanks for marriage info for Arthur - this ties in with death notices.
