Nottinghamshire / Re: William Tuckwood-Apprentice Shoemaker 1800 ish.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for your reply. The Lincs Archives have no records of William, but the info that he could possibly have been a Journeyman is very interesting. If he was born in Welby to William and Amy (Dring) he was left on his own after 1799. Amy died 1799,his brother Thomas died 1798 and his father (I think) re-married to Elizabeth Bee in 1800,so if he was learning the Shoemaker Trade it made sense to go out and find work.
I can't find a Shoemaker/Cobbler Guild info.I phoned Northampton but they were unable to help me.

Hello Sheila,
Thank you for all the info, where did you find the newspaper report? Can I get a copy? Sooo interesting!!! I think Elizabeth's death is the correct one with the wrong age as it would be too much of a co-incidence to be two Elizabeth Tuckwood living in Cross St.
I live in Skegness Lincs, so to come over to Notts Archives would be an all day job.Any help I can get would be appreciated.
I'll check on Beck St/Beck Lane on Google Earth to see if they are same place or near to each other.
Until we speak again,
Maggie

Hello Rob, Notts Archives have no records of him.I've tried Northampton Trades  Records too. They have Charles but no William.Surely he must have learnt his Trade with someone.Maybe he didn't and worked as a shoemaker without a proper Apprenticeship learning the basics from a friend?
Going off at a tangent,Rob,I'm trying to find his parents.
Some Family Trees give his baptism as 14 Feb 1779 Willoughby-on-the-Wolds and father as Isaac Tuckwood, but that William died in 1800 and he was a farmer.
The other William was born in Welby in Lincolnshire October 1779 parents William and Amy (Dring) In November 1803 he married Elizabeth Granger at Notts St Marys and all the children were born there. My Grt,Grt,G'father was George 1817 Charles' brother. On Georges marriage cert 1839 it says "father deceased-Shoemaker"
I'm trying to find out if the Welby William is the same one that married Elizabeth,if so how did he get to Nottingham.
I've tried to find a "William"born in Notts around 1779 but there doesn't seem to be one. There is no death record either.
If anyone can help I will be very grateful

Nottinghamshire / William Tuckwood-Apprentice Shoemaker 1800 ish.
« on: Thursday 27 September 12 11:28 BST (UK)  »
Good morning all,I'm trying to find an Apprenticeship to be a Shoemaker that William Tuckwood (1779? )would have had to have had to teach his son Charles (1804) they lived in Nottingham St Marys. In 1814 William was living at Boot Lane,Shoemaker.1822 he was in Cross St Shoemaker,1825 again in Cross St Shoemaker.
Deardons Directory,Notts 1834 says "Boot and Shoemakers Tuckwood C. and W. Beck Lane Notts.
The Glover Directory Notts 1844 entry for Shoemaker Charles Tuckwood-Newcastle St.I
n 1838,Charles took on an Apprentice,Thomas Cooper which means he was a Master Shoemaker.
To date,I have not found anything appertaining to William.
Can anyone help please.
Thanks
Maggie
