London and Middlesex / Electoral roll updating, 1930s London
« on: Saturday 03 March 18 06:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am just wondering what the process for updating the electoral roll in London in the early 1930s was? I am looking at ordering a death registration for someone in the 1st quarter of 1933 but I see the same person on the London electoral roll of 1934 on Ancestry (for the last time that I see definitely). Is it possible I still have the right death registration to order even though the person was still on the roll until the next year?

I am looking for a burial record or newspaper death/funeral notice for a James Joseph Heath who died on 9 February 1932 at Southam Street in Kensington aged 33.

I have searched Deceased Online, Findmypast, Findagrave and Ancestry for a burial record and I have searched Findmypast, The Times Digital Archive and The Telegraph Historical Archive for a family notice, but without success.

Can anyone suggest any other places to search? I'm in Australia so I only have access to online resources.

Roscommon / British army units stationed in Elphin in 1920
« on: Friday 23 February 18 16:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there, is there any way of telling which British army units might have been stationed in Elphin, Roscommon, in 1920?

I am investigating the marriage of James Heath, full age, soldier, residence Elphin, father George Heath builder & Sarah Madden, full age age, residence Clooncullaan, father Thomas Madden carpenter. The marriage was at the Catholic Church at Strokestown on 5 Nov 1920.

From a son's Australian marriage certificate I know that James' full name was James Joseph Heath. I found a medal card of a James Joseph Heath as attached but I couldn't find a service record and suspect it may have been among those destroyed in the Second World War.

I've done a lot of research on the couple so I don't really need any help other than to find out what British army units were stationed there (if I can).

Many thanks if anyone can help.

Devon / Kate White born about 1849 in Kingsbridge Devon
« on: Wednesday 21 February 18 09:22 GMT (UK)  »
I believe my three times great grandmother may have been a Kate White born about 1849 in Kingsbridge Devon.

The earliest census I have found her in is 1871:

Kate Ridgway, 22, born Kingsbridge, Devon, wife, resident in Waddesdon Buckinghamshire. She appears with her husband Eli Ridgway (23) and her daughter Louisa Ridgway (3).

I can find no record of her marriage to Eli (who appears in some records as George Ridgway) but I located her maiden name by ordering the birth certificate of one of her daughters in Staffordshire:

Ellen Ridgway, born 2 Nov 1874 at Court 5 Lea Brook Road, girl, father George Ridgway a colliery labourer, mother Kate Ridgway formerly White, informant Kate Ridgway mother Court 5 Lea Brook Road Tipton.

I am wondering whether anyone can locate a birth record for Kate or her 1851 or 1861 census entries? I am struggling with it and have had no luck.

I was wondering whether anyone can decipher the profession of convict William Holden who arrived in New South Wales on the ship "Sarah" in 1829? Attached is an excerpt from his convict indent (the profession comes after the placename "Sussex"). Many thanks if anyone can help.

Scotland / Purvis/McDougall Marriages
« on: Sunday 07 January 18 01:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, I am descended from the marriage of David Stubbs and Catherine McDougle on 24 Aug 1807 at St Leonard Hackney, Shoreditch, London.

In the 1841 census at St Pancras, Middlesex, Catherine's birthplace is listed as Scotland and age is listed as 50. In her 1850 burial record at St Martin in the Fields, Camden Town, London, her age is given as 64 giving a birth year of about 1786.

Catherine and her husband gave two children the middle name Purvis. Purvis is, according to google, a Scottish and northern English surname, so my suspicion is that the name comes from Catherine's side of the family (David was English and his parents were William Stubbs and Ann nee Kirby).

Hence I am trying to find, without success, marriages between McDougall and Purvis in Scotland in the 1700s in order to trace Catherine's origins.

I was wondering if anyone can find any links between McDougall and Purvis families that might explain the middle names and lead to Catherine's baptism record?

Catherine left a PCC will but, as best I can read it, it doesn't mention Scottish relatives.

Buckinghamshire / Ridgway from Buckinghamshire, Madden from Roscommon
« on: Tuesday 26 December 17 10:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there, my Scottish-born Australian mother never knew her father but has done an AncestryDNA test that has thrown up a few hints.

Three of her five closest DNA matches on Ancestry (all listed as potential 3rd-4th cousins) descend from Eli George Ridgway, baptised on 21 November 1847 in Waddesdon, Buckinghamshire, the son of Thomas Ridgway & Alice. I strongly suspect these matches are on my mother's father's side as none of them are shared by my mother's maternal-side 1st cousin who has also done an AncestryDNA test.

A number of her other close DNA matches descend from various Madden families from Strokestown, County Roscommon, Ireland. I also suspect, for the same reason, that these matches are on my mother's father's side.

I am trying to find some connection between the Buckinghamshire Ridgway and Roscommon Madden families in the hope that it will give clues as to my mother's father. My mother was conceived in London in 1954. Her mother was born in 1925.

I was wondering if anyone knew where "JIMC" is in Victoria? Found the abbreviation on the Victorian BDM index.

Hi there, I was hoping someone could decipher the entry for Hugh McCrink aged 20 born Killowen in the attached British merchant seamen record. I am wondering whether it records a return voyage from Sydney to Liverpool aboard the Araminta in 1855.

The context is that I'm descended from a Hugh McCrink who married a Mary Fitzgerald on 14 May 1855 at St Mary's, Sydney. There are two possible candidates for this Hugh McCrink that I'm aware of. One is a sailor who arrived as crew on the Araminta in 1854 (hence why I am checking to see if there is a return voyage) and the other is a soldier with the 11th North Devonshire Regiment of Foot that was on garrison duty in NSW at the time.
