This is Josef Szinkunas' World War One draft registration: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KXBH-DMF

It doesn't give any further clues to his place of birth but does give his birthdate as 13 March 1879.

Hi again brigidmac, I'm actually not sure if my friend's dad was in a displaced persons camp. He was definitely a displaced person in Europe after the war (in Germany). I found him in the Arolsen Archives with a DP card (through the kind help of the people above). I'll check with my friend if her dad was in a camp and whether she's happy for me to pass on her father's details. If she says yes I'll send you a private message.

Just to let everyone know, I started a new thread looking specifically at Antanis Carauskus, the "brother-in-law" of my friend's grandfather Kasimir. That thread is here: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=830292.0

Hello everyone, I am helping an old friend with a particular section of her family history. She is Australian but one set of her grandparents were Lithuanian and they both migrated to Maine for a period in the early 20th century and married there in 1913. Their names were Kasimir Malinauskas and Emilia Bardauskas.

Kasimir came to America aboard the SS Amerika in 1906. The Ellis Island manifest gives as his American contact a brother-in-law Antanis Cyraukus of Lewisport, Maine: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JF8W-NY3

This Antanis (I assume it's him) appears in the 1910 US census in the Androscoggin County Jail: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MR3P-8YX

My query is, can anyone find Antanis in any other records, or any record of why he was in jail, or any record of his wife. I can't. The census says he married in about 1905, presumably in America as it says he immigrated in 1900.

If it helps anyone, below is a quick summary of my research so far.

Kasimir appears in the 1910 US census at Bates Street, Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MRSR-8ZG

Emilia arrived at Ellis Island in 1911 aboard the SS Celtic with her prior residence given as Girwelyki:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JJPF-7XM

Kasimir and Emilia married on 17 May 1913 at Lewiston:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q24N-XD59

They had a child on 10 August 1914 at Lewiston called Kasimir or Charles:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q24N-XFN9

Kasimir Senior was registered for the draft in 1917, with his date of birth recorded as 20 March 1876:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2HM-R5KT

Kasimir and Emilia's family appear in the 1920 US census at Knox Street, Lewiston:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MFZ4-4FD

Kasimir and Emilia and their son returned to Lithuania in the early 1920s.

Another man, Josef Szinkunas, was travelling with Kasimir on the SS Amerika in 1906. Josef also gave Antanis of Lewisport as his American contact and cited him as a brother-in-law. Josef went to Lewiston (he appears in the same household as Kasimir in 1910) but ended up in Rochester, New York. This is him in some American censuses:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X78Q-8S4
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KQ58-XKB

This is the birth of Josef's eldest daughter: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q24J-373C

I didn't find Josef Szinkuna's naturalisation but I did track him through the censuses. After 1910 he appears at Rochester, New York. In the 1930 census he gives his place of birth as, I think, "Koona" Lithuania: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X78Q-8S4

I wonder if this place is Kaunas? I wonder if this is a clue to the place of origin of Kasimir, who came with him on the boat, gave the same American contact, and lived with him in 1910?

Yes that's a good idea, I will look for naturalisation papers.

I think I found Kasimir Malinauskas (as Charles Malinouskis) in the 1910 US census at Lewsiton Ward 6, Androscoggin County: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MRSR-8ZG

He is a boarder in a household headed by Joseph Shinkunas, presumably the man he arrived with on the SS America in 1906. He is next door to a household headed by Joseph Bukis and containing, as a boarder, Joseph Bagdonas who I have a feeling (not proven) might be the man mentioned in Emilie Bardauskas' 1911 manifest record.

Charles Malininskis is recorded in the draft registration in 1917, listing his wife Amelia as a relative: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2HM-R5KT

So is Joseph Bagdonas I think: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2HM-29CM

Yes indeed, the unsual surnames (for Anglophone countries) make it harder. But I did get a big help from the unusual first names of Emilie and Kasimir which the family remembered - that's how I found the 1920 census and 1913 marriage record which narrowed down where they were in the US and then led to the correct arrival records at Ellis Island.

Hi jorose, many thanks for your very detailed reply, I've found all those documents and they have some great information!

I did actially find Anton Caraukus in the 1910 US census in the Androscoggin County Jail, Maine: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MR3P-8YX

I haven't yet found his arrival record. The census record says he immigrated about 1900 and married about 1905 (ie in America). But I haven't found the marriage record or the rest of his family. I also couldn't find any Maine newspaper articles on Findmypast that mentioned why he might have been in jail, or any Maine court records on IGI. The trouble with names with many potential English spellings!

That is interesting that the second 1911 arrival record for Emilie says that her father is in Lewiston. Her 1913 marriage record says that he was resident in Russia.

I should also mention that I started a thread on the Ancestry message board system looking to see if anyone could identity "Nipelen" (Kazimir's place of origin) or what I thought was "Sinvelyki" (Emilie's place of origin). No-one has yet come up with anything for Nipelen but Sinvelyki, which was actually probably "Girwelyki", may well be Gerwoloki or Girwoloki, two places near Kupiskis. My friend's dad was a resident of Kupiskis before he came to Australia, as you say.
