World War One / Need help identifying the regiment and rank of a soldier
« on: Monday 26 January 15 17:33 GMT (UK)  »
I need help identifying the regiment and rank of a soldier, my great-uncle Edward Wisby. The photo shows him sitting with three pals. He is the one bottom left. I think he may have been in the army after WWII into the early 1920s so this may date from that period.

I need help identifying the regiment and rank of two soldiers. Plus one other group.

The first is my great-uncle Edward Wisby. The photo shows him sitting with three pals. He is the one bottom left. I think he may have been in the army after WWII into the early 1920s so this may date from that period.

The second is of my great-grandmother's brother James Higgins. He was a professional soldier just before WWI. I believe he was in the South Wales Borderers, 2nd Battalion but if anyone can verify this from the photos I would be grateful. He is pictured with a group, he is in the back row, 7th from the left. The back indicates that it was sent from Gravesend, Essex.

The last photo may be connected to the same regiment as James Higgins but I'm not sure. It shows a group of army cooks in their whites and all it says is on the front is three names followed by 8th Battery Cook Houses and Dining Halls. The back shows that it was probably taken in the Preston area.

I have listed them all separately. Any information will be gratefully received.

Occupation Interests / Re: Ancestor who was a butler - help wanted

Thank you. I had searched the 1881 census for any likely George Bloomfields and had found him but I have no way of knowing if he's the right one. He could have left his wife and fathered two children with my great-great grandmother or maybe his wife died but what happened to his children?

Does anyone know if there is a registration of Butlers where my one may listed showing both his workplace and home address?

Occupation Interests / Ancestor who was a butler - help wanted
« on: Monday 26 November 12 22:38 GMT (UK)  »
After many years of searching I discovered the birth name of my great-grandfather and his brother who both had a different surname from all their siblings (born in 1888 and 1889). Their birth certificates shows their father's occupation as a butler.

I hoped that this would lead to more information but all we know of him is his name and occupation - George Bloomfield, butler and the two addresses where they lived at the time in Chelsea in Marylebone. He is not on the census at either of these addresses in 1881 or 1891.

The parents never married and I don't know his age, so I am a bit stuck. All I know is that when the mother married in 1892 she said she was a widow and married under his name. So he had presumably died but no one of the name George Bloomfield of the right age died in that area where they were living or anywhere in London.

I understood that butlers usually worked and lived in the same household and were usually single (or if they were married it was to a servant in the same household). In my case he appears to be living at home with his family but working elsewhere.

Does anyone know if you had to join an organisation when you become a butler and did you have to pass any kind of text or exam? Are there any records?

Can anyone think of any other way I can find out more about my great-great grandfather?

Thank you for your help. He could be the one who served 1915-1919 as he married my great-grandmother in September 1919 so that would add up date wise. But if he signed up in 1915 that would be when he was 38 which is quite old.

Thanks, I have just re-posted it in the Army section. Is it okay to leave it in both sections?

Armed Forces / Need help identifying age/regiment of Army photo
« on: Sunday 25 November 12 17:28 GMT (UK)  »
This is a photograph of either my great-grandfather or my grandfather, we are not sure which (they were both called Robert Victor Lay). If it is the former it probably dates from WWI (he was born in 1888 and died in 1918) but if it is the latter it would date from the 1930s (my grandfather was in the Territorial Army at this point). We don't think it dates from WWII but it might.

The photo is postcard size (3.5 x 5.25 inches) and the back has the word Post Card / Carte Postale and the printer's name Chester Ltd. There is a number written in pencil 40983 which may be a reference to the photographer but could be a reference to a regiment.

Can anyone identify the regiment from the cap badge, shoulder sleeve insignia and belt, and date the photograph?

This is a photograph of my great-grandmother's second husband David John Jeremy. He was born in Shoreditch in 1877 and died in Hackney in 1954. He is in Army uniform but we are sure it pre-dates WWI, probably between 1901 and 1912.

There is nothing written on the photo or the back so we don't know the date. It measures approx 5 x 7 inches.

Can anyone identify the regiment from the style of the uniform and the buttons?
