Kent / Poole family of Plumstead
« on: Wednesday 01 June 16 17:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I am researching the Poole family of Folkestone, then Plumstead, then Chelmsford, Essex.

George Poole was born 7 Feb 1826 as LDS Family Search, and appears on 1841 census at Hadlow Road, Tonbridge.     He married Elizabeth Sale, Seale or Woodger in Tonbridge in 1849 as GRO Marriage Index.

London and Middlesex / Sorrells of Islington
« on: Tuesday 04 November 14 16:34 GMT (UK)  »
Henry Sorrell (whose mother was a Mitchinson) was a Japanese PoW who worked on the Burma-Siam Death railway and was subsequently drowned when one of the PoW Hell ships was sunk.
His daughter knows of five Sorrell aunts, presumably all Henry's sisters.     They are Ada, Doll, Sis, Maggie and Lil.     Sis was married to Chris, and Lil to Cliff.
Free BMD gives Sorrell mother Mitchinson children as:-  Emma E 1913,  Doris K 1920, Lilian C 1922, Ada M 1924.        Also gives Henry 1911 (before mothers given on GRO index).
Census 1911 gives Maggie age 5 (so 1905/6) and Henry 7 weeks (so 1911).
Find My Past gives Sorrell-Mitchinson marriage as 1915.
  I can't find Maggie birth anywhere, nor can I find Henry's father's (Henry Edward b 1876) death.

I have detailed knowledge of Henry's wife, daughter and son-in-law, so no problems there.

But.......

Can anyone who has knowledge of the Sorrells give me some pointers as to sorting out who is who and when?

Thanks,
Coelmar

Essex / Edward Hammmond and Martha Weaver
« on: Wednesday 13 November 13 20:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!
Edward Hammond and Martha Weaver were married at St Nicholas, Witham, Essex by Licence on 23 February 1753.
I have a suspicion that Martha may have been born about 1732 in Rivenhall, but I cannot trace Edward anywhere before his marriage.
Their children were all baptised at Witham Newland Street Independent Chapel from1754 onwards, but I have a feeling that there were two couples called Edward and Martha Hammond having baptisms there as they go on well into the 1770s, sometimes a couple of baptisms a year.
However, does anyone have any information on either Edward or Martha before their marriage?    I have copy of the Marriage Bond and the Licence, also the Marriage Register, but nothing solid (or even a bit wobbly) before the marriage bond date.
     Many Thanks

Essex / Stephen Taylor, Maldon
« on: Tuesday 15 October 13 22:34 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I cannot find the birth of Stephen Charles Taylor, born about 1870 in Maldon, (or somewhere quite near), Essex.
He was living with his grandmother Rachael Crowland, a widow, at Maldon in the 1871 census, and again in the 1881 census.     He was an Ordinary Seaman on the ketch Malvoisin at Hullbridge, Essex in the 1891 census, but I can't find him 1901 census.     He married Alice Bacon in Maldon 1906, and appears on 1911 census.
But I can't find his birth, and I can't find his parents.

Has anyone done any research on him, or know anything about him?

Hertfordshire / Martha Tuffnell born Near St Albans circa 1799
« on: Friday 21 June 13 16:45 BST (UK)  »
The 1851 census HO107/1691 f488 p48 s205 at Whitchurch, Berks (subsequently transferred to Oxon) gives Martha Young age 52 born ?Affieti near St Albans.
I know Martha Tuffnell and George Young were married in Sulham, Berks 23 Feb 1836, so she would have been born Martha Tuffnell.
What I do not know is - where was she born?     I just can't make out the name.
I have tried OS 25k maps, atlases, gazetteers and such like, all to no avail in finding Affieti.
Can anyone help me, please?
Thanks

Suffolk / Thomas Dedman
« on: Saturday 04 May 13 12:22 BST (UK)  »
I have found that Thomas Dedman and Ethel M Kemp were married in Bosmere Regn Dist, Suffolk in March quarter 1918.
I think I have found Ethel Mahala Kemp, born 1888 at Ipswich, in the 1911 census at Claydon, Suffolk and the 1901 census at Ipswich.
But I cannot find Thomas in 1901 or 1911 census, nor in the GRO births index.

I think that Thomas's grandparents may have been David Dedman born Somersham 1845 and Emma Hardwick born Bramford 1851.

But I have been unable to find Thomas, or his mother and father.

Can anyone help, please?

Dublin / My Tapes have come Unstuck
« on: Monday 10 December 12 20:26 GMT (UK)  »
Perhaps I should say I have come unstuck with my Tapes.

James Tape, London censuses have him born Dublin about 1860, married Sarah Louisa James in Clerkenwell, London 25 May 1890.

I have 1891 - 1911 censuses of him and his family in London, and know about his descendants - well, the ones which link him to me,  but I cannot seem to find anything about him before his marriage.

The Marriage Certificate shows his father was also James Tape, a porter.

The phrase 'all contributions gratefully accepted' certainly applies.       Thanks

Ayrshire / Young & Davidson, Dailly
« on: Saturday 24 November 12 16:15 GMT (UK)  »
Family legend has it that Alexander Davidson was gardener at the Manse and fell for Agnes Young the Minister's daughter.    The Minister couldn't sack him, so he enlisted the help of an old university friend and found Alex. a job in Berkshire - far enough away to put a stop to the young people's impudence.     Alex worked at Pangbourne, then went back to Dailly, married Agnes and returned to Pangbourne, and the rest is history.
Well, Alexander and Agnes did marry at Dailly on 16 April 1833, and did live out their lives in Berks - he was gardener at the Nautical College there.   That much we have found out.
But what about their parents and families in Scotland?
And what about the yellowed letter that has surfaced in British Columbia with a descendant of part of the family who emigrated in 1911.     It was written by John Young of New Farm/Fain/Force  in Nov 1833 and sent to Alex from somewhere that had very cold winters and deep snow - perhaps Canada.
     Anyone any ideas, please?
