The Common Room / Re: 2 baptisms? (Baptised twice?) COMPLETED

Thanks all. I think there are enough examples of double baptisms for me to accept it is the same person - there's quite a lot of supporting cross-referencing as well. It was just those little niggles and anomalies that gave rise to doubts.

He was C of E and 2nd baptism took place 3 years after the first.

Both churches are CofE - Christchurch St Marylebone (1833) and St Margaret Westminster (1836). The only evidence of change of residence is the one baptism in Marylebone. The others were in St Margaret.
Unfortunately, their father is elusive - no trace in 1841 or 1851. Wife appears alone in both censuses but in 1851 she says she is still 'married' and there is other evidence to indicate that both spouses are alive. The waters are further muddied by Thomas' marriage certificate, where the father's profession is given as 'soldier'. (3 of Thomas' siblings are in the armed forces) and yet all baptisms say 'labourer' or 'weaver'. Of course, I considered that the Thomas on the baptisms might not be mine, but there is a lot of evidence to say he is and I have not found a viable alternative.

Hi avm228. Unfortunately the names are very common (as are most of 'my lot') - Thomas Allen.  The 2 baptisms are some distance apart - the first in Christchurch St Marylebone and the second in St Margaret Westminster, where siblings are baptised.  Also it is the first location that appears in his census records (as Marylebone or Paddington). I've found no evidence of a burial.

Hi redvanman. That would be another neat solution but there is no evidence of a remarriage.  There is  evidence in 1851 that both parents are alive.

Hi Shaun, neat idea about the godparent. Unfortunately, no benefactor, is in evidence - neither at the baptism nor later.

Thanks for helping but date has been clarified in a separate post. It was 1851 not 1859

The Common Room / 2 baptisms? (Baptised twice?)

1830's London. How likely is it that some-one would be baptised twice?  I have a probable ancestor baptised in 1833, with location and the birth year corresponding to consistent census entries. A second baptism is recorded with his younger brother in 1836, the year of the latter's birth, but the location no longer corresponds at all to the census entries for my guy. I know baptisms of siblings can take place together, so the year is not of great significance. So, for the first baptism: year good, parents good, location good, father's profession corresponds to elder brothers' baptism records (labourer).  For the second: year could be ok, baptism with sibling, my ancestor's second given name is there, father's profession corresponds to later information (weaver). So, 2 baptisms?
