The Common Room / NHS Digital passport scam
« on: Saturday 18 September 21 17:12 BST (UK)  »
My husband has just received an email inviting him to apply for a "Digital Corona Virus Passport", sent from an email address similar to the NHS one.  Being of a suspicious and curious mind he did not click on the link inviting him to enter details, mainly because we did not know that such a thing existed and because we had already recently downloaded our Covid Passes from the real NHS website, also because the wording of the message did not seem quite right.  Further checks revealed the email to be a scam.  It apparently asks for some personal details and presumably also for payment/bank details.

The Stay Safe Board / Getting an NHS Covid pass
« on: Monday 12 July 21 14:56 BST (UK)  »
Be warned, this is a lengthy process, at least it was for me!  Firstly I had to create an NHS account with password, which involved 3 different security code messages sent to my mobile.  Then various pieces of information had to be entered and suddenly I was asked for photo ID.  Didn't have any, so husband had to find his camera, take a snap, download it to his computer and send it in an email to my computer, where I filed it to add to the application.  After all that it was rejected (resolution too low), so I then had to take the alternative route, supplying 3 pieces of information which were only available from my GP's surgery (Passphrase, Organisation code & Account ID).  This meant a phone call to the surgery, where a helpful secretary found and supplied them to me.  They had to be sent to me in separate emails for security purposes.  Rushing back to my computer, I completed the form and pressed "Submit", only to be informed that my time had expired and I must start all over again.

I have at last received my pass and would pass on this tip for anyone else wanting to print out a Covid pass - choose the Download option, where both the vaccination dates are shown on one page, rather than printing off an email, which takes 2 pages.  They are only valid for a month, then you have to apply again at a later date.  Of course if you have a smartphone (mine's an old oyster model ::)) it can all be downloaded onto there.

We're off abroad shortly and are finding the red tape endless (bah, Brexit!) >:(

Lancashire / Princess Elizabeth's 1940 broadcast
« on: Friday 02 July 21 11:43 BST (UK)  »
I recently unearthed from an old cupboard a 33 rpm recording of Princess Elizabeth made in 1940, which was broadcast in Children's Hour and to children throughout the then Commonwealth.  It's in a cardboard sleeve with the name of the shop of Alfred Fielden, who had businesses at 78 & 248 Drake Street, Rochdale  and also at 768 Manchester Road, Castleton.

Is Alfred Fielden a relative of yours or do you know anything about him?

I do remember listening to the record in my childhood and it seems to be in good condition, so will keep it for a while longer - maybe it will have some rarity value??  You can hear it on YouTube if you search for "Princess Elizabeth's First Broadcast".

The Stay Safe Board / Lateral flow tests - how good are they?
« on: Tuesday 29 June 21 10:40 BST (UK)  »
Not very, is my answer.   Let me tell you why.

My daughter and I were about to set off on a long-planned journey to visit relatives 300 miles away in Cumbria.  Just as we were leaving the house she received a phone call from her boss to tell her that one of her work colleagues had tested positive for Covid-19.  She had already arranged to pick up her children from school early, so we had to collect them, but she took a lateral flow test before we left to do that.  It showed negative.  At her workplace they take lateral flow tests twice a week and she had been negative all the time.  We picked up the children and sat in the car debating what to do, then rang our Cumbrian relatives and cancelled the trip.  Early the following morning she took a PCR test which showed her to be positive.  The lateral flow test was still showing negative and has continued to do so for several days now since the PCR test. I also took a PCR test since I had been in close contact with her for a couple of hours.  Luckily it was negative, but I am now keeping out of everyone's way in Covid quarantine for 10 days.

She has now lost all faith in the lateral flow tests.  We are now wondering whether these large gatherings (football matches, Wimbledon, concerts, etc.) which require a negative test result from attendees are actually demanding PCR tests or just lateral flow tests.  If the latter, expect an increase in the number of infections recorded - oh, wait a minute, isn't that what is happening now.....?

The Stay Safe Board / Hindsight - No Covid deaths recorded 1st June in the UK
« on: Wednesday 02 June 21 10:26 BST (UK)  »
Despite the good news (and the caveat from some quarters that the zero might be the result of a Bank Holiday weekend, which could have affected registration numbers) I do feel that we are being softened up for the extension of restrictions beyond June 21st.  Maybe it's the media choosing to interview pessimistic (or realistic?) commentators or maybe it's a subtle way by the government for preparing us for the worst outcome.  How do you feel?

The Lighter Side / New census 2021 form
« on: Thursday 04 March 21 16:50 GMT (UK)  »
Have you received your census form yet?  We haven't, but relatives in Wales received theirs today, one copy in English and one in Welsh, each over 30 pages long.  We're thinking that when we do receive it we will  complete and submit the form online but also fill in the hard copy to keep for ourselves.

The Stay Safe Board / The dangers of domestic sanitising
« on: Tuesday 02 February 21 11:21 GMT (UK)  »
I've been systematically wiping everything that comes into the house with diluted bleach, particularly supermarket shopping.  Inside the house i wipe surfaces with the same mixture, paying particular attention to surfaces which are touched, like door and cupboard handles, including fridge doors.  To my horror the bleach has corroded the fridge surface and there are now patches of rust around the wiped areas! :o  Just shows how strong even diluted bleach really is (or maybe how cheap my fridge was)  Maybe anti-bac spray would have been a better choice for the fridge,  Other surfaces seem OK.

The Stay Safe Board / Ill-fitting masks
« on: Thursday 10 December 20 10:16 GMT (UK)  »
I'm heartily sick of TV interviews with people whose masks don't cover their noses.  Even the PM's nose was clearly visible yesterday in an interview.  Why don't the cameramen tell them to cover up?  We all surely know by now that both mouth and nose should be covered.  ::)

p.s. Ever tried putting on and taking off a mask when wearing a woolly hat which covers the ears?  It's a tricky business.

The Stay Safe Board / Masks
« on: Tuesday 27 October 20 12:10 GMT (UK)  »
There are too many people appearing on TV whose masks don't fit properly!  As they speak, their masks move down their faces until the whole nose is exposed, making mask wearing pointless  They constantly adjust their masks, too, thus ignoring the advice not to touch them.

Make sure your mask is a good fit and tighten up the strings if it keeps slipping down when you are talking!

I find that when I look down when wearing my mask, for example when I'm looking in my purse or at a price ticket on a low shelf, my mask pokes into my eyes.  Haven't solved that one yet. :(
