Aghadowey: 20 miles, not so far if he were looking for a substantial town in which to make and sell his watches and clocks.

Maybe he moved to Antrim because the John Kirk, Loan Fund Society Manager, was a relative as Edward's son was named John Kirk Kelso?

Dr. Thomas McCombe, his future BIL, was the workhouse medical officer in town and probably how he met his wife to be, though she lived in Larne.

Rosinish:. Thanks so much for taking the time to provide information on your Walsh, but as yet I've not come across this gentleman in my search.  Will get back to you if he does pop up.

Hey there!

Have no info to provide that would help you in your search, but I am also on the hunt for a Robert Kelso and sometimes it helps to just put it all out there.

Robert Kelso c1800 had a son, Edward c1826.  Edward had a half-sister named Esther (Hessy) Kelso who had a child baptized 1843, so she was presumably older than Edward.  Unless there was a Kelso=Kelso marriage or an adoption, I am assuming they shared a father until I learn otherwise.

Edward Kelso m Matilda McComb of Larne, Antrim, in 1852, and his father is listed as Robert, occupation gentleman. The couple had at least one child, John Kirk Kelso c1856, though unsure whether he was born Antrim Town or Donaghadee, Down.  John Kirk Kelso eventually emigrated to Ballarat, Australia, where he married Elizabeth Carman and had at least one daughter, Lillian Kirk Kelso.

Edward left shares in his will to the 2nd Presbyterian and the Primitive Wesleyan Methodist Congregations in Antrim Town.  Why both?

Edward's half-sister Hessy (Esther) Kelso appears to have married a Catholic, Daniel Sheils.  No record found as yet.  They had at least three children, all bapd St Patrick's RC Belfast:  John Charles 1843, Elisa 1844, and Anne 1847.

Edward's will says "late of Donaghadee," when his will was drawn up in 1857, but his executors were residents of Antrim Town.  He died in 1859, so sad - his son was about three years old!  My thinking is he knew he was ill and relocated for his health - but that is just a theory.

Hessy Sheils (Hester Shields) lived in Ballynafeigh, County Down, now part of South Belfast, in 1862 and moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire, England c1873 with her daughter Elizabeth (Rice), and where she died in 1892.

No idea if Anne Sheals b1847 survived.  John Charles Sheils lived, procreated, and died in Ballynafeigh (Down, Ormeau on census).

Derry hadn't even been considered as the origin of Robert until I saw Tamlaght O'Crilly on a map and realized its proximity to County Antrim, and could possibly answer why Edward set up shop in Antrim Town or how he even met a girl from Larne.

No siblings mentioned in Edward's will other than Hessy.  If Edward's marriage record is correct, he was born 1826, so I would imagine his parents' marriage would have taken place not long before then.

What struck me as unusual was the emigration of so many Kelsoes from Derry to Australia, and I was wondering if John Kirk Kelso may have known another Kelso who was already there before emigrating.

Also curious is his name, JOHN KIRK Kelso, and his daughter LILLIAN KIRK Kelso.  Who were these Kirk people? There is a John Kirk, Loan Fund Manager, in Antrim Town in 1852 street directory, but I have yet to connect the name Kirk with Kelso as yet.

Any help to further my search would be greatly appreciated.

Ggf John Charles Sheals bapd 1843 St Pat's RC Belfast.  Father Daniel, mother Esther Kelso.  Can find no record of their marriage.  Unsure but she may have converted.

Hessy's half-brother Edward 26 yo watchmaker of Antrim Town m Matilda McCombe of Larne in 1852 in Glenarm Presbyterian.  His father is listed as Robert, occupation Gentleman.

Edward d1859 and mentioned Hessy in his 1857 will, at which time he was living in Donaghadee.  In that same will he left money to the 2nd Presbyterian Church and the Wesleyan Methodist, both Antrim Town.

Edward and Matilda McCombe had a son named John Kirk Kelso.

Hessy seems to have been widowed between 1847 and 1862, as she is seen living in Ballynafeigh (South Belfast) as Hester Shields.  Her son John lived and died in Ballynafeigh.

Hessy and Daniel Sheals had two other known children after John Charles, Eliza 1844 and Anne 1847 (sp Cecilia Mullen), bapd in St Pat's RC Belfast. No idea what happened to Anne, but Eliza moved to Birkenhead with her Rice family and Hessy went with her, and it appears she died there.

Ros Davies shows an Esther Kelso bpt. 23 Dec 1819 (& William bpt. 4 Jun 1820) at Ballyroney Presbyterian Church.  Age is appropriate but father is listed as William not Robert, as on Edward's marriage record.

I've seen the names Edward and Robert Kelso in the Templepatrick area on land records but have yet to make a connection.  Have only recently cottoned on to the fact that Templepatrick is near Donaghadee!

My goal is to determine origins of Hessy Kelso, or Daniel Sheals.  Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much Linda!  I have been thinking that the Mitchells were not Catholic, but that is really just a feeling.  There are no obvious Mitchells listed as sponsors at any of the Walsh childrens' baptisms and I've been unsuccessful linking Mitchell females to the non-Walsh sponsors.

Have seen COI, Presbyterian, Moravian, Methodist, and only a very few RC Mitchells in the Antrim and Ballymena area.  Leaning toward Presbyterian at the moment.

Believe Lina Mitchell's father was named John as a son was named John Mitchell Walsh. Have you seen any land records for John Mitchell in Dunsilly, or any Mitchell for that matter?  The names Robert and George could also be connected.  It may be coincidence but there was a Robert and a George Mitchell seen on two street directories living on the same streets James Walsh, son of Lina Mitchell and John Walsh, had listed on his childrens' birth registrations (Belfast).  Just putting it out there!

Have you read the book Living in Dunsilly: A History of the Donnan Family in Antrim?  Was wondering if it might be worth the investment.

Again, I really appreciate your response.  Will keep the Henrys and Gawns in mind while I search.   :)

Antrim / Re: Murphy family Clonard Street
« on: Tuesday 22 November 16 01:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hey there!  No records to share, just some family history on possibly same Gormans of Clonard St.  My paternal gm Rose McAuley lived at #19 in 1911 and continued living there after her marriage to Tommy Wright in 1923.  The Gorman and Wright children of that generation (born after 1923) were close.  I remember seeing a photo of a group of them c1833 in bathing costumes looking like they were having the time of their lives - all smiling and arms draped about each other.  Could have been taken in Bundoran as the Wrights spent some time there in the summer, but my mother doubts that.  One of the young girls (? Kathleen) is wearing glasses, if i remember correctly. I believe she was my aunt Mona Wright's best friend until Mona moved to America c1856.  Wish I had the photo to share!

Will check with historical societies as recommended and post any result so as not to keep other readers hanging!  Thanks again for your insight and willingness to share.

Absolutely fabulous information Elwyn!  With so few records from that time I think I must start searching cemeteries if I want to get any further.  Though John Walsh and Lina Mitchell had a dozen children I can only confirm the lines of two of them, both in Belfast from 1860s, so I'm now looking to see if some may have died youngish or remained in Steeple.  Understand there may be no grave markers, but will check to see if any records are held by the burial sites you kindly provided.

The address given for the birth of last child, John Mitchell Walsh, in 1861 was Barnfield.  I can see a Barnfield Road in Lisburn but this doesn't jive with any other information I currently hold.  Do you know if Barnfield correlates to a location in Antrim Town?  My guess at present, since learning he continued tenancy in Steeple until 1898, is that it may have been a specific area on that estate.

There is a John Mitchell in GV living in Leitrim Drummaul. Do you know if that townland has been known by another name?

Thanks again!
