Surrey Completed Look up Requests / EBSWORTH 1861 - Southwark
« on: Tuesday 25 October 05 17:08 BST (UK) »
Hello there, I hope someone can help me get my research back on track.
My g-g-grandmother was Alice Elizabeth "Eliza" Carter (who became a Dwan in 1888, but the Dwans have caused me enough headaches for the time being, so never mind them just yet!), born in 1868 in the Bermondsey/Southwark area. I'm looking for her parents. I'm afraid I don't know her father's name or the names of any siblings, but the mother was Jane Carter (formerly Ebsworth), who lived between 1846 and 1923.
I don't think the Gawkrodgers that so many of you kind Rootschatters helped unearth are related to my troublesome Dwans, as I've just discovered the above facts from a distant cousin in Canada. He is sure that Eliza's mother was born Jane Ebsworth and not Jane Martha Gawkrodger. He also says she lived into her 90s, which means that her dates don't add up. I'm waiting for him to clarify this.
I thought I'd got the tree back to 1735 and added 24 names to it, sniff.
We always thought that this was Eliza's family (she is listed below as Alice):
~~~~~~~~---------
1881 census (RG11/0528 - folio 87, page 30)
226 Southwark Bridge Road (Southwark St George Martyr)
Alfred CARTER M 40 M St Saviours, Surrey (HEAD)
Jane CARTER M 36 F St Olaves, Surrey (WIFE)
Alice CARTER 12 F Southwark, Surrey (DAUGHTER)
Herbert CARTER 10 M Lambeth, Surrey (SON)
Emma CARTER 9 F Southwark, Surrey (DAUGHTER)
George CARTER 3 M Southwark, Surrey (SON)
Rose CARTER 1 F Southwark, Surrey (DAUGHTER)
Louisa CARTER U 42 F St Saviours, Surrey (SISTER)
~~~~~~~~---------
I suppose it could still be, just that wife Jane was born Jane Ebsworth, not Jane Gawkrodger.
Any help in finding anything whatsoever about Jane Ebsworth would be very much appreciated.
With sincere thanks in advance,
Vicky
