Surrey Completed Look up Requests / EBSWORTH 1861 - Southwark
« on: Tuesday 25 October 05 17:08 BST (UK)  »
Hello there, I hope someone can help me get my research back on track.

My g-g-grandmother was Alice Elizabeth "Eliza" Carter (who became a Dwan in 1888, but the Dwans have caused me enough headaches for the time being, so never mind them just yet!), born in 1868 in the Bermondsey/Southwark area. I'm looking for her parents. I'm afraid I don't know her father's name or the names of any siblings, but the mother was Jane Carter (formerly Ebsworth), who lived between 1846 and 1923.

I don't think the Gawkrodgers that so many of you kind Rootschatters helped unearth are related to my troublesome Dwans, as I've just discovered the above facts from a distant cousin in Canada. He is sure that Eliza's mother was born Jane Ebsworth and not Jane Martha Gawkrodger. He also says she lived into her 90s, which means that her dates don't add up. ::) I'm waiting for him to clarify this.

I thought I'd got the tree back to 1735 and added 24 names to it, sniff. :(

We always thought that this was Eliza's family (she is listed below as Alice):

~~~~~~~~---------
1881 census (RG11/0528 - folio 87, page 30)
226 Southwark Bridge Road (Southwark St George Martyr)
Alfred CARTER   M   40    M   St Saviours, Surrey (HEAD)
Jane CARTER   M   36    F   St Olaves, Surrey (WIFE)
Alice CARTER       12    F   Southwark, Surrey (DAUGHTER)
Herbert CARTER       10    M   Lambeth, Surrey (SON)
Emma CARTER       9    F   Southwark, Surrey (DAUGHTER)
George CARTER       3    M   Southwark, Surrey (SON)
Rose CARTER       1    F   Southwark, Surrey (DAUGHTER)
Louisa CARTER   U   42    F   St Saviours, Surrey (SISTER)
~~~~~~~~---------

I suppose it could still be, just that wife Jane was born Jane Ebsworth, not Jane Gawkrodger.

Any help in finding anything whatsoever about Jane Ebsworth would be very much appreciated.

With sincere thanks in advance,
Vicky

Just wondering if anyone knows of any good books showing old views of the Bermondsey/Rotherhithe/St Olaves area alongside pictures of how those parts of the East End look today. Would love to get one for my Mum who is from these parts. :)

Cheers,
Vicky

Hello,

I'm looking for information about my g-g-grandfather, James Turner, born about 1864 in Rotherhithe. Would very much appreciate a lookup. He was married to Annie, born 1865. I have them on the 1901 census and James is 37 there and a 'leather cutter'. Wife and all kids were born in Bermondsey. Children are: Emma, Lily, Ellen, James, Mary, Frank and Frederick - all born from 1887 onwards (in that order).

With sincere thanks in advance,
Vicky

Census and Resource Discussion / Yay! Found them at last! (DWAN)
« on: Thursday 28 July 05 17:54 BST (UK)  »
Just wanted to share...

I've been baffled by the absence of my Dwan ancestors (from Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, Southwark etc.) on the census returns for a long time now and today I found a load of them on the 1881 census as "Deran" instead of "Dwan"! Weeeee, I'm so happy! ;D

Tried all the possible spellings: Dwann, D'wan, Duan, Duann, Duanne, Dwayne... ::)

Not being able to find them has been bugging Mum and I for about three years now, as we always knew that they were very much alive and kicking - and living in the same area their entire lives! - but we could never find them on any of the censuses!

I'd love to go back in time with a black biro and teach the enumerator how to print in capitals! >:(

Er, now I just need to find them on all the others :-\ but still! I found them on the 1881 at long last! ;)

Yours excitedly,
Vicky :P

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / NBI (Surrey) - GAWKRODGER
« on: Thursday 28 July 05 16:40 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone find a death for Renard Gawkrodger, please? I think he had died by 1881 (his wife had remarried by 1876, anyway). He was born in 1821 in Shepley, Yorkshire. He was married in Staines, Middlesex and his children were all born in Bermondsey, Southwark and Christchurch between 1845 and 1859. Hope that's enough information to make a search possible. :)

Many thanks,
Vicky
