Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Lookup request, 1861 & 1881 - LORYMORE
« on: Tuesday 19 July 05 16:58 BST (UK)  »
If Felicity Williams is still willing with her kind offer, would she please help this struggling genealogist eliminate a possible relation from her enquiries?

The name's Elizabeth Lorymore, born in Bristol. She's 48 on the 1871 census (RG10/2536, Folio 10, Page 12, Household #94 - if that helps at all), living with a young Elizabeth Lorymore (10), a William Barrington (18) and a Henry Barrington (19). "Barrington" is my mother's maiden name. My g-g-g-grandmother was called Elizabeth Flynn, who married William Barrington. I suspect she outlived him and possibly re-married... and I'm wondering if she became Elizabeth Lorymore after his death.

I'm wondering if you could find her on the 1861 and/or 1881 censuses (censes?) if it's not too much trouble. I'm hoping that some extra names can confirm her identity or eliminate her from my looooooong list of possible Barrington connections!

If you'd be willing to look for me, both my mother and I would be eternally grateful.

Many thanks in advance,
Vicky

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Hit-and-run death, Essex
« on: Tuesday 19 July 05 16:08 BST (UK)  »
Perhaps a bit vague, this one, but please read on! :)

I don't know if I've any right to ask this, but a family member of mine was killed by a hit-and-run driver in the mid-to-late Sixties somewhere in Essex. He was about 20 at the time and I wondered if it was covered in the local press. I don't know where in Essex, so please forgive me for trying to locate a needle in a haystack, but I wondered if I've any chance of finding out about the story and his short life in general. Bless him, he was a bit of a tearaway in his youth by all accounts, an illegitimate child and I believe he wrote his life story (although I don't know if it was ever published or not). My grandfather, who I never knew and died when my mother was very young (and before the accident), was his foster parent. I know it's quite recent, and although he had no wife or children and all his immediate family have now passed on, I realise it's still a sensitive one. Any advice as to how I should go about tracing his life would be very gratefully received.

Thanks,
Vicky

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / LAMB family, Hither Green
« on: Tuesday 19 July 05 15:06 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for information about my g-grandmother, Mary Edith Lamb, who became Mary Edith Barrington in 1905 when she married Frank William Barrington at St Mary, Newington, Southwark. Her father was James Lamb, a painter, according to the marriage certificate. Would love to know the name of Mary's mother and any other family details - especially if she had a brother who never married called Arthur. The family had a connection to Hither Green, where I believe they all lived. Also, Frank William Barrington is buried at Hither Green cemetery.

If anyone knows anything about Mary Edith Lamb/Barrington, James Lamb or Arthur Lamb, please get in touch.

Thank you in advance,
Vicky

World War Two / 291st Airborne Field Regiment R.A. (T.A.)
« on: Tuesday 19 July 05 14:06 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather fought in WWII with the 291st Airborne Field Regiment R.A. (T.A.) based at Lewisham. His name was Percy Victor Frank Barrington, but he was known in the army as "Charlie". I never knew him, as he died before I was born and when my mother herself was a child (1961), but have requested his military records from the MoD and would love to know more. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful. I can't travel to London at the moment. I found a book called 'Lewisham Gunners: A centenary history of 291st (4th London) Field Regiment RA (TA) formerly 2nd Kent RGA (Volunteers)' but it's £25+ and I want to know if it will be worth the money. I also want to request the military records of two g-grandfathers, so need to watch the pennies!

Thanks,
Vicky

Europe / GERMANY: John Westerman
« on: Tuesday 19 July 05 13:50 BST (UK)  »
I found out today that my g-g-g-grandfather was from Hannover. I don't know if it was the province of Hannover (now Lower Saxony), or the town of Hannover, but I wondered if anyone here can help me find out about his life in Germany. It would be great to know when and where exactly he was born, the name of his mother and any siblings (I already know that his father was also called John Westerman) and what made him move to England and when.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I can't visit Kew at the moment. I couldn't find him when I searched the National Archives site. I have him traced on the 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses (or is it censes?!) and I know when he was married (have got the certificate) and when he died. I don't have the death certificate, though.

Thank you.

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / John Westerman, Guernsey
« on: Monday 18 July 05 21:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi there, I wonder if someone can help me out here. I've got the following from the 1871 census. John Westerman was my g-g-g-grandfather. Although the 1881 census says that he was born in Germany, and the 1861 census says that he was born in Bristol, I was just wondering if anyone might be able to shed some light on why his place of birth came to be listed as Guernsey in 1871. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to read this message.

Somerset / Frank William BARRINGTON
« on: Monday 18 July 05 21:28 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching the name BARRINGTON - my mother's maiden name. My g-grandfather was Frank William Barrington, born June 1881 in Bristol and married to Mary Lamb in 1905. His father was William George Barrington, born June 1853 in Bristol and married to Caroline Westerman in 1876. His father was also called William George Barrington and he was married to Elizabeth Flynn... when and where, I don't know, but I think Somerset. Of course, I'm also interested in the Lambs, Westermans and Flynns. I don't expect much joy here with the relatives mentioned above, as Frank and Mary lived and died in the London area, and the others are all very much Bristol born and bred. But I believe the family roots go deep into Somerset, taking the family name from the parish in Petherton - if I've done my homework correctly! Needless to say, any help on this would be greatly appreciated, so please get in touch if the name BARRINGTON rings any bells.

Thanks for taking the time to read and all the best with your own family research.

Gloucestershire / The Pithay, Bristol
« on: Monday 18 July 05 20:53 BST (UK)  »
Just wondering if anyone has any information about The Pithay, Bristol. My g-g-grandfather was born there in 1853 and I'm just trying to find out something about the area. His name was William George Barrington. I believe his father was named the same.

Thanks in advance,
Vicky

Family History Beginners Board / German Immigrants
« on: Monday 18 July 05 18:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi there! I'm new to the site and this is my first post. The place looks fantastic and I can't wait to be a part of it. :)

As on the subject of abbreviations, I wondered if anyone knows what "BS" means. "British Subject", perhaps? Sorry if it's a silly one. My g-g-g-grandfather moved to Bristol, I believe, from Germany. He shows up on the 1881 census as follows:

John WESTERMAN        W   63    M    (BS), Germany
Rel: Father
Occ: Labourer In Sugar Factory (Refiner)

Thanks and all the best,
Vicky
