Occupation Interests / Hair... what?
« on: Sunday 16 July 06 23:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Can anyone read this and tell me what it says, please?

I'm sure it's really obvious and I've just got my stupid head on today. ;)

Thanks in advance,
Vicky

Armed Forces / Royal Artillery Barracks, 1901
« on: Thursday 13 July 06 20:57 BST (UK)  »
Perhaps a silly one, so apologies in advance if necessary, but I've stumbled across an ancestor who, on the 1901 census, was at the "Royal Artillery Barracks, Green Hill Schools, Repository, Gun Park and Observatory" (St Mary, Woolwich). With respect to him, he's not a crucial ancestor (won't help me get back further), but I am curious. Any advice on how I could find out more about his military days?

Many thanks,
Vicky

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / LAMB marriage - St George East
« on: Thursday 13 July 06 19:26 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for a marriage between James Lamb and Mary ???, 1834-1844. I'm sorry, I don't know Mary's maiden name.

I do know that they were both born in St George East, Stepney in 1825 or 1826, although I have their daughter as being born in 1835 (!) according to the 1881 census (Elizabeth Kennett, age 46). Second child was born in 1845, so this is more likely.

Any help gratefully received!

With thanks in advance,
Vicky

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / 1851 (Surrey) - Thomas DUANE
« on: Sunday 02 April 06 20:25 BST (UK)  »
I'm sorry if I haven't provided enough information to make it possible to find him, but I'm looking for Thomas Martin DWAN and his wife Catherine. I believe that Thomas was born in 1827 (as was his wife) and I know they were married in 1848. I don't know where exactly they lived in 1851, but I know it was somewhere in Surrey (they were married in Lambeth and the family roots are very much in the Bermondsey/Rotherhithe area). I just wondered if someone could try Thomas DUANE instead. I haven't been able to find a matching Thomas DWAN in 1851, and I've tried several variations of the name with little success, so I'm hoping that he's listed as DUANE. It seems like it's worth a shot! I have so many possible Dwans pencilled all over my tree, I'd love to find the names of his children and this seems to be the cheapest way! I do know that he died in 1871 and I'm waiting for his death certificate to arrive. 1861 might reveal more, but I assumed it would make sense to start at the beginning.

With many thanks in advance,
Vicky

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / 1841 (Lambeth) - John PRESTAGE
« on: Sunday 02 April 06 19:24 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I don't know if anyone can help me with this, as I imagine it's a big ask, but I'm looking for a Prestage family.

John Prestage would be the head of the family, a labourer in 1848. I think his wife was Mary Ann. I know his daughter was Catherine (married in 1848, all the information I have on this family comes from Catherine's marriage certificate and I don't have a year of birth to be helpful, as her age is given simply as "full"). There could also be another child called Benjamin.

If it's of any help, they were living at what looks like "Brad Street" in 1848.

Anything on this family would be gratefully received.

Yours hopefully with many thanks in advance,
Vicky

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / 1901 (Rotherhithe) - BROWN
« on: Sunday 19 February 06 20:06 GMT (UK)  »
Could anyone please look for the following couple on the 1901 census for me? They were married in 1899 in Rotherhithe. Addresses at the time of marriage were Paradise Street and Roney Street.

Charles Brown, age 24, waterside labourer
Ellen Brown, age 23

With thanks in advance,
Vicky

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / 1841 (Stepney) - John CARTER
« on: Saturday 18 February 06 11:33 GMT (UK)  »
Would a kind soul please look for John Carter, a shipwright, and his son Charles Carter - who will be living with him. Charles was married in 1846 and it looks like he was a minor. Charles' occupation on his marriage certificate is 'fire wood cutter' and the address is rather unhelpful: just Stepney, Middlesex (I hope I'm putting this on the correct board, rather than the London board). The two witnesses at the wedding in 1846 were John and Joanna Carter. Not sure who they were, but we suspect they could be Charles' parents seeing as he was a minor.

So maybe there will be John, Joanna and Charles Carter living together in 1841. Fingers crossed!

Thanking you in advance,
Vicky

P.S. I have another thread that relates to this family: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,108725.msg469446.html#msg469446

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / 1841 (Bermondsey) - George DWAN
« on: Thursday 16 February 06 21:39 GMT (UK)  »
I don't know if anyone can help with this one, but I'm looking for George Dwan, born in 1824 in Bermondsey and always a labourer of sorts. That's all I've got, I'm afraid. ::)

I do know that his wife was called Elizabeth (possibly Elizabeth Walker) and their first surviving child was born in 1873. He was called Thomas.

Any ideas on how to go back further would be gratefully received.

Yours hopefully,
Vicky

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / 1891 (Rotherhithe) - Jeremiah DWAN
« on: Thursday 16 February 06 21:34 GMT (UK)  »
Could anyone please look for Jeremiah Dwan? He will have a daughter called Ellen who will be about 12. I can't find them on the 1881, but I know that Ellen was married in 1899 (age 20) and Jeremiah's profession then is given as "dock labourer". Their address in 1899 was 11 Roney Street, Rotherhithe.

Thanks very much in advance,
Vicky
