Europe / Germany: Cultural History - Marriages and Maiden Names?
« on: Tuesday 26 February 13 09:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.  Can anyone please tell me if German tradition is to adopt a husband's family name upon marriage, as it is (though not so uniform today) in the English-speaking world?  Particularly, in the 18th and 19th centuries?  Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry, but there's one more on the page I didn't notice "Bergmaurer", which I presume to be a type of miner (Bergmann)?

Europe / German Translation: Nachtsteiger / Stollenhauer

Hello.  Can someone please help me translate these two words into English: "Nachtsteiger" and "Stollenhauer"?  I believe they are male occupations, in the 18th century.  A translation program didn't come up with anything useful.  I've attached the source.  Thanks for any help.

Australia / Re: Access to South Australian Census Records?
« on: Wednesday 30 January 13 02:08 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for that.  I was interested whether the individual information for the censuses was available.  You can see the personal cards used for the 1911 census at:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0srv/ ** (page 11).  Their destruction, until recently, makes sense why I couldn't find anything (I was thinking the 1901 and 1911 censuses might have been now available under a 100 years rule).  Thanks re the electoral roll link - that was another line of enquiry.  Does anyone know about pre-Commonwealth censuses in SA?  For example, there was an Australia-wide census in 1881.  Were the individual records for these similarly destroyed?

Australia / Access to South Australian Census Records?
« on: Tuesday 29 January 13 04:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.  Does anyone know if (and where) you can get access to the individual records (personal cards) used for the 1911 Australian census or earlier, particularly for South Australia?  Couldn't find any obvious answer to this on the usual websites.

Many thanks for the responses so far.  I've found one person who married two members of my family, he married like a cousin after both their first spouses had died.  No children thankfully, to reduce the complexity!  I myself have a step-sister to represent.  I like the reference to same sex relationships above - none here yet, but interesting question for the genealogists of the near future!

Yes, happens to me every now and then.  Reinstalling the driver software usually resolves it.

Hi all.  I'm scouting around for genealogy software - I've browsed the great Wikipedia comparison.  I like the look of the outputs (charts) in Family Historian and Legacy, to a lesser extent FTB, FTM, Genbox and GenoPro.  However, before beginning to download and type madly, does anyone have any feedback on how these (or other) programs handle and depict less-than-usual relationships like second unions (marriages) with offspring, step relationships etc?  Thanks.
